      What scared her?:

Ah yes, the rainy season: a perfect time to cuddle up in your blanket with some hot choco and a romcom movie. Meri booted up her laptop while preparing hot water to mix in the chocolate powder and marshmallows, afterwards heading back to her side of the barn to start the movie. She gently put down her mug and sat down, finding a comfy position. Surely, by that point, her movie has loaded enough for her to start watching--

"Ahh!" Meri screamed in terror, almost toppling over her mug of chocolate. "My movie hasn't loaded yet!"

It's never happened to her before; Meri had access to the fastest internet in the barn, and only she knew the password to that. Was it because of the rainy season? Was it just one of those days where the wifi was naturally slow? Maybe she should call her internet service provider. Or could it have been...

"Someone is stealing my wifi." She said in a whisper.

Meri looked around the barn for anyone who could've been stealing her net. Almost every other animal in the barn was asleep, asides from the chickens roaming around pecking at the ground for more food. Her shifty eyes gazed left and right, up and down for any form of life that could've been using gadgets that caught her wifi and, for some reason, her wifi password.

Looking back to her own barn in distress, she grabbed her mug of choco and pressed it near her mouth for her to blow. As she took a sip, she looked down on her own drink and was immediately shocked by the turn of events.

"Wh-where are the marshmallows on my hot choco?" She exclaimed. "All my marshmallows are gone!"

Quickly putting down her mug, Meri grabbed her white blanket in fear of whatever entity was making fun of her. First her wifi, and now her marshmallows? Who was there, and what else did they want to do with her? Why her, why Meri, of all the animals in the barn?

Whatever was happening was scaring (and stressing) the heck out of her.

      How do you calm her?:

A quick glance to the side and she noticed a line of ants marching to and fro the cracks in the wall right beside her corner of the barn. They were seemingly harmless, but Meri nonetheless, in fear and stress, slammed her hoof on the wall. A hoard of ants fell towards the cracked entrance and started scrambling on the barn floor. It didn't help her situation, but it looked funny to her anyway.

...And then a half-consumed marshmallow fell down and rolled outside the crack.

"You!" Meri said. "You took my marshmallows!" She got up and raised her hoof. "Why, I outta smash you--"

"Wait!" said the faintest voice, seemingly coming from one of the ants. "Please don't harm us. Our colony is big and we just needed food for the rainy days." The ant paused. In a fainter voice the ant trailed off,
"...and wifi because we get bored when it rains."

"What was that last part?" Meri asked, kneeling to the floor.

"W-wifi?" The ant said, terrified. "Ants can't go out when it rains, and we... just kinda needed a source of entertainment."

Meri bolted up. "You've been stealing my food and my wifi! And to think I thought it was a ghost!" She huffed. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't trample on you right now--"

"W-w-we can pay!" The ant said, trying to keep composure. "We can pay, a-and we can help you do other things, like steal stuff when no one's looking. I guess it hasn't occurred to you that we know your wifi password because we can just watch you typing, right?"

Meri paused. The ants were good. "Alright," she said, coming out of her white blanket. "You better pay me for the wifi, at least. Ask permission if it's my food you want. And if I need your help, no backing out. Alright? Or else I'll call pest control on you."

"D-deal!" The ant exclaimed, and hurriedly ran back to their crack in the wall along with the other colony members. Who would've thought Meri would make a pact with a bunch of ants in her barn wall? She shrugged it off and went back to her laptop and now marshmallow-less drink.

And hey, her movie's loaded already, so everything seemed to work out just fine.

What scared her?:

She could already smell the putrid stench of her decade-old, stale perfume hanging in the air. It was heavy, a smell that seemed to hang in the air like a brick tied to the ceiling with a single thread. She could already hear her Aunt Genevieve's shrill, with-like laughter, her yellowed teeth protruding from her lower jaw.

Yes, Aunt Genevieve was... something. And she was the something that Oneida feared most.

Her mother had warned her weeks previously about her Aunt coming to stay for dinner, but no preparation in the world could ever make Oneida ready enough for Genevieve's arrival. Genevieve was arrogant, snobby, nosey, and most of all pushy. Her mother always blamed her sister's antics on the fact she is the middle child, but no excuse would ever make Oneida like her, not one bit.

The day came when her aunt would make her infamous debut, and all Oneida wanted to do was to crawl into her room and disappear until her Aunt left for good. She had multiple hiding places already figured out and prepared, but nothing could hide her from her mother's glares.

"As much as I know that you aren't happy with Aunt Genevieve coming here, she is family. She is family and you will come down and greet her properly. Please be respectful." She would say, rubbing her temples. Part of Oneida felt as if her mother secretly felt the same way she did.

Noon came, and at about 1:30 the door of a car slammed shut, the sound reverberating through the house. The walls seemed to shrink in fear as her footsteps drew closer, clacking against the concrete steps and to the ornate wooden door. The banging on the door signaled Oneida's mother to rise to her feet and approach the door, opening it only to be shoved to the side as the bulbous figure forced her way through. Aunt Genevieve immediately began to complain about the state of the house: It was too big, too far, and too dusty. The walls were too old and should be repaired, and the floors were not carpeted as she wanted. Whipping open the fridge door, she began to rummage through to look for something to eat, even though dinner would be finished shortly.

"I swear, no caviar? Lucielle, I know you live in a bungalow but I thought you'd have better taste in food! But, when have you ever had good taste in anything, I mean, look at your husband -"

Oneida's mother sighed, wiping the sweat from her brow and trying to ignore her sister's judgments. It didn't last long, though, as she whipped around once more, ice cream dribbling from her mouth. Her eyes scoured the house as if she was searching for prey, and she then began to drill into Lucielle.

"Where is she? Where is that horrid little brat of yours? How dare she not greet me at the door?!"

Her mother sighed again, rushing to the stairs and calling for Oneida, who immediately began to panic. Trembling, she made her way slowly down the stairs, tears already streaming down her face. As she hit the landing, her aunt was on her like a hawk, scolding her for not greeting her immediately like a good child. She continued to degrade Oneida, on her schoolwork, her clothes, her social life. Her constant complaining broke Oneida from her frozen state and she rushed back up to her room, her aunt right on her heels. Slamming her door and locking it, Onieads hid in her closet, her racked sobs only making her aunt forth at the mouth and scream louder.

Oneida feared her aunt. She feared her monstrous attitude, her teeth, her breath, and her size. But, most of all, she feared the things she said, feared the horrible condemnations, feared how those judgments would affect her own health. All she could do now was wait for the banging on the door to cease, and the car to turn on and speed off into the distance.

How do you calm her?:

After about an hour of screaming outside of her door, Oneida could hear the car start up and drive away. Her sobs did not stop until a softer knock at the door stirred her out of her hiding place. Opening her door, she could see her mother slowly making her way down the stairs. A small letter was placed outside her door, to which Oneida quietly picked up and shut her door. Taking the letter to her desk and opening it, she was greeted by a folded piece of pastel blue construction paper. Oneida unfolded it and her lips immediately curled into a smile.

The paper had small, intricate flowers doodles along the borders, small hearts decorating the words written in the center of the page. She could tell already that it was her best friend's handwriting- she lived next door, and musth= have heard the screaming from her room. Onieda read the words over and over, her heart growing fuller every time her eyes scanned over them.

"You are beautiful."

Maybe. Maybe she was, maybe she wasn't. Oneida wasn't sure anymore. But, maybe one day she could realize her worth all over again. It will take time, but Oneida knew that no matter what, her friends would always be there for her, especially when she needed it most.

What scared her?: Aurelia awoke to a rocking sensation. Opening her eyes, she slowly adjusted to the darkness. She could hear creaking and shouting above her. Lifting her head she surveyed the area, she appeared to be below deck of a ship?! She stood suddenly, unnerved by the whole situation of waking on a boat, unsure where she was headed or why and what was to be her fate. A feeling of nausea came over Aurelia as she realised her predicament. She took a tentative step forward, she had to find out what was going on, wether it made her situation worse or better, she just had to find out......
How do you calm her?:A calm voice broke through, another heifer by the sounds of it. Looking up she hadn’t realised the hatch had opened and it had revealed a way out of below. A warm face looked down at her, smiling. Aurelia’s nerves started to eb, as the heifer spoke to her. Calmly walking towards her, the heifer spoke-

Hello, I’m Dakota. You must be wondering where you are. We’re headed to a paradise island, we plan to start anew there. Away from war, we’re the new generation.”

Aurelia stepped forward, the news the heifer had brought calmed her. Smiling widely she stepped out into the sunlight, ready for a new world.

What scared her?: 174 Words
It growled and snapped, crackling across the sky and lighting up her bedroom. The rain slashed at the window, pelting it hard like fingers tapping on the glass. The tips of Ovia's ears twitched and her eyes opened with a start as the deep rumble grew. It boomed and crashed like a tree snapping in half, before suddenly cutting off to the sound of harder pelting rain drops. Her pale moon coloured eyes widened as another sharp flash of lighting opened up her room into daylight, she saw tall looming shadows grow against her walls, arms outstretched reaching towards her.
Ovia screamed as the finger shadows scratched over her cheeks and tickled her hooves. she pulled her outstretched legs under the covers shaking as the thunder cracked and the lightning brought more shadows.
"MOMMY" She cried, tears streaming down her cheeks as another bright flash shot through her window. She pulled the covers up over her nose, whimpering quietly to herself as the thunder crashed on bringing the shadow monster back with every boom.

How do you calm her?: 311 Words
Her door flung open, and a large tall figure stood in the doorway. Ovia screamed and covered her head in the covers, peeking her eye out through the single hole that was in her blanket.
"Oh honey no its ok" The soothing voice of her mother broke the loud crashing of shadow monster. Ovia quivered as her mother sat down on the bed, pulling the young calf towards her she felt her mothers lips pressing a kiss into her forehead through the blanket. Ovia pulled the blanket down slowly, nose twitching with a sniffle from her crying.
"Whats wrong my sweet O?" Her mother cooed, pressing her nose against her daughters head and rocking her to comfort the calf.
"T-t-theres a shadow monster in my room." Ovia whispered, ducking her head under once more as a flash of lighting shot shadow fingers across her and her mother once again.
"Oh child, its ok that isn't a monster." Her mother soothed, "Its only the great oak tree outside the window."
"NO" Ovia cried, "He tapped on my window and tickled my toes." Her ears laid back as she glanced at the window, and the shadows looming through the curtain.
"Come look with me." Her mother scooped Ovia up into her arms. The calf clung to the blanket, still peeking through her blanket as her mother approached the large single pane window. She pulled the curtain back and the two peered outside. "Now cant you see? It is simply the storm and the tree."
Ovia peered out the window, looking at the dark world outside. A flash of lighting spread across the world, and she watched as the branches in the tree cast large scary shadows. She pulled the blanket from away from her head and giggled as the shadows cast dancing shadows around the room now with her new perception of them.

    What scared her?:
It was Halloween night. Every year, without fail, Nukshopa's friends come to her cottage and they all carve pumpkins and watch scary movies on TV. But this year, because of the bad forecast, they didn't come. However, she was still fixed on carrying out the tradition. The issue is, Nukshopa is a real scaredy-cat, and the last time she watched a thriller alone she locked herself in her room until morning. But this time she was determined to best her fears. All was going accordingly, orange guts were spilled and pumpkin seeds were cooking in the oven. Then "Halloween" came on, and she was very scared and very happy to conveniently have a small knife. While sitting in her chair she was fine, once she got up to check on the oven however, she felt fear creeping up her spine; as if someone was behind her watching her. All of a sudden, she heard a loud BANG! BANG! BANG! at her front door. Nukshopa jolted, dropped her carving knife, and grabbed the blanket she was using in the living room. Her heart pounding fast, and she slowly crept toward the door...
    How do you calm her?:
...Tense, she slowly turned the doorknob and winced; only to find three smiling faces looking up at her. "Trick or treat!" they shouted, showing her their buckets filled with candy. They waited, and of them dressed as a pirate giggled, "Are you a ghost?" Nukshopa stood there, stunned. Then she sighed with relief and smiled. "Yes, sugar! I am a ghost," she said. "I'll be right back with some candy." She went inside and grabbed a bowl of sweets beside all the food she had planned for the evening. She came back out and said, "Here you go, take what you want." Their faces lit up as they each took fistfuls of candy and she couldn't help but smile. "Thank you!" They cheered, running to the next house. She went back inside, took the blanket off, and brought her newly lit pumpkins out to the porch. She sat there in her rocking chair with the bowl for the rest of the night, greeting children and giving them surplus amounts of sugar, feeling peace as she felt the cool air and heard laughter in the distance.

What scared her?: and How do you calm her?: (one story, but I’ll separate the prompts with some lines if that’s alright!)

Georgia smiled and laughed as her and her friends strolled out of the movie theater. ”Man, that was great! I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so hard at a movie!” she exclaimed, her friends laughing more and nodding in agreement. The group had had a fun filled but busy night, and the sun had already set, the inky blackness of nighttime creeping in.

The theater wasn’t far from anyone’s barn, so everyone had decided to walk there. There was no issue during the daylight, but in the darkness, all of Georgia’s fears and paranoia amplified. She knew the best and safest thing to do would be to have her friends walk her home before they all went their separate ways. However, Georgia couldn’t bring herself to asking them for that type of favor, since they lived in the opposite direction from her barn. She felt like an inconvenience, and she didn’t want to feel like a burden to her pals. Despite their offers to safely guide her home, she turned them down and parted ways.

As she stepped alone down the side walk, Georgia could already feel the anxiety and terror rushing through her veins. This is the worst thing I’ve ever done she thought to herself. She quickly pulled her keys out so that when she arrived home so could swiftly enter the barn, and also so she would have a way to defend herself if need be.

As if she wasn’t already scared enough, Georgia’s ears twitched, as she could’ve swore she heard something — or someone. I’m just jittery. It’s all in my head she thinks, trying to calm herself. But the sound kept coming, louder and closer. Georgia’s eyes grew wide with panic, her expression getting more frantic. It was the pitter patter of hoof steps beating against the sidewalk. Whoever the belonged to must’ve been quite large, because the hoof steps sounded heavy. In a full out panic, Georgia breaks into a full on sprint, racing all the way home, flinging open the front door and locking it behind her.

Georgia flew to her bed like a rocket, plopping down on the mattress like a stone. She grabbed her favorite white blanket and curled up underneath, completely hidden. She was breathing heavily and got tears streamed down her face. She flinched as she heard a knock on the door.

Oh no, they followed me home... this is it for me, I’m a goner! she whispered to herself, curling up even tighter under her blanket. The knocking stopped quickly, but this did not ease Georgia’s conscience. Her phone buzzed, and she nearly jumped out of her skin. Through her teary eyes, she manages to make out a message from one of her friends, Tor, who she had just been with. He was a massive bull with an even bigger heart. She let out a nervous laugh as she read his message. The heavy footsteps behind her turned out to be him! She rushed to the front door, still donning her white blanket cape for comfort, to go talk to her friend.

— — —

”I’m so sorry Georgia, I didn’t mean to scare you! I tried to call out to you when I saw you take off, but you must not have heard me” Tor explained as Georgia opened the door. She flung herself around her large friend, crying into his shoulder as the two hugged. “I just felt too guilty leaving you to walk home on your own. I know you told us not to worry about it, but it didn’t feel right to me, so I came back” Tor told her. She thanked him in between sniffles and sobs. She felt better now, but was still quite a bit shaken up.

“You went through all this trouble for me, why don’t you stay the night here. Truth be told, I don’t think I’m ok enough to spend the night alone, so I really do hope you’ll stay” Georgia said. Tor agreed, and Georgia got out extra blankets and pillows for him. Tor cuddled up to Georgia to comfort his friend, and eventually, she was calm enough to fall asleep.
