Spring brings many new beginnings, whether it be baby animals coming into the world and opening their eyes, or the birds and other creatures returning to their summer homes to enjoy the warmer weather as winter’s snow melts away. Arguably, one of the best and most trademarked things about spring is the flowers and endless expands of new plant life it creates each year. Of these, there are millions of species, such as perennials, grasses, new tree sprouts, and many types of famous annual wildflowers.
Everyone has favorites, and for cows, the choice can be even more difficult. While we humans only have to look at them or smell them to decipher, livestock also have the option of finding which is the tastiest of them all. In Kitty’s case, she likes to be a connoisseur, destroying gardens and being a flower menace as she attempts to find the best tasting flower. Every year its been something different, as she makes her way down the stepping stones of life to reach her goal of finding the most delicious flower.
It’s been a rain-heavy winter and early spring, and thus, the selections are a bit different this year. All the usuals are here; tulips, poppies, the occasional blue bonnet, but there are newcomers too. Reeds and damianita daisies, mosses creeping along stones, and most peculiar of all, tall, thick stemmed plants that sway by the trickling creekside. White flowers grace its top, with weird feelers that Kitty notices look almost like arms. She wanders closer, and wonders if they'll taste like the arms are reaching for her to give her a warm and wonderful hug, or a pinch.
They seem harmless, but once she attempts to take a bite, she quickly finds out why the deer have spared them thus far in the season. The stem is thick, glossy, and tastes like plastic. There are tiny thorns on the ground around them, too, which prod and prick at her soft wet nose. She spits it out, and backs off, squinting her light eyes at these white villains taking up residence in her field. She must come up with a plan of attack.
While consulting with Tea later in the evening at feeding time, she learns these flowers are called Spider Lilies. A fitting name, Kitty sneers. Not many people love spiders, and these look just like them! Plus, she assumes they likely both taste the same; absolutely horrible.
---
The next day, she gets to work. Approaching the weird intruders again, she prepares herself for battle. Meticulously, and with a wild determination that Tea will never understand, Kitty picks off every little thorn she can from a single stem, until she rids it of it’s defenses. However, when it comes time for the final blow to the plant’s creepy flower, she cant seem to bring herself put it in her mouth. She’s almost grown fond of the way the weird flower sways in the breeze, like it’s tentacles are dancing in the air, or like a skinny starfish blowing across the ocean’s floor.
Instead of a dramatic tale of her bravery and perseverance only to come to the finale of finding out whether these spider lillies are delicious or are truly the most disgusting plant in the field, Kitty shows Tea her new hostage. The spider lily sits tucked into her collar, comfortably nestled into it’s leather hold now that it’s thorns have been removed. Tea rolls her eyes and yawns as Kitty tells her about the hours she spent ‘freeing’ this little flower from the creekside home it lived in, even though Kitty makes it seem more like an epic battle. Tea wonders if Kitty knows the flower will be dead and wilted by a couple days from now, but decides to save that information, lest she wants Kitty thinking that Tea spies for these spidery enemies. For now, Kitty is content telling her tale to anyone that will sit through it, and she loves to hear them say the flower’s white matches her eyes.
