prompt:"You like to read, don't you, little one?"
A young calf looked up at the heifer, eyes big. "Well, sometimes," she replied, quickly adding, "but not always."
Her mother gave her a quick lick on the forehead, "Of course not always, Rowan. Never always."
---
In truth, Rowan had never been strictly this or that.
She was neither loud nor quiet. Instead, she was loud enough for others to hear, but not loud enough to annoy. She wasn't talkative, but she could carry on a pleasant conversation. Her tone was never harsh, yet rarely very soft. Her words were not at all cruel, but she wasn't one to sugarcoat and flatter. Her manners weren't lacking, though she didn't always behave appropriately. She rarely wore her heart on her sleeve, but couldn't turn away someone who needed a friend. She loved to be outside, but fancied being on the couch with a good movie as well. She spoke her mind without forcing her views on anyone.
She was decidedly in the middle with regards to everything in her life.
---
"It's okay to take sides every now and then, you know, Rowan."
Rowan looked back at Serafina, her expression equal parts confusion and sass, "What ever do you mean?"
The younger cow smiled gently. "Loving something fiercely means that you can lose it, that it can hurt you," she began, voice soft and sweet and far too knowing for her age, "But it's also what makes you, well, you."
Rowan scoffed, a sound more suited to a frown than the smile she wore, "I'm afraid I don't understand what that has to do with taking sides."
"Never taking a side means never loving anything, never hating anything. It also means you're just existing, moving through life without any real meaning. There's so much to gain from not always staying in that middle ground, Rowan."
Rowan's eyebrows furrowed, and for the first time in her life there was nothing contradictory about her. Her expression matched her emotions, and her thoughts centered around her emotions. She finally understood.
---
Rowan had always loved her ability to remain impartial, to exist in a middle ground. Now, however, she loves her opinions. She loves the sides she chooses and the loudness of her words. Most of all, though, she loves how much she's grown, and how happy she is to be different.
