Task 1 - Unloading;Share a story in the unloading from the trailer
(50-100 Word Story)When I heard that there were still a few of the Meadowdale Grels lurking about at the rescue center, I was incredulous. HOW had no one given these guys a home yet?! Thus, having nothing better to do with all the empty space on my ranch, I decided to open my home and heart to these wayward creatures. The more the merrier, eh? Especially when you're dealing with undead equines with the power to steal souls. Am I right?! *flashes a thumbs up*
Anyway, the newest of my Grels - baby - was a complete cinch to unload. I just backed the trailer up to the quarantine field, pulled the door open, and out she came! She seemed extremely happy to be out of that dark little box.
Task 2 - Taming;Share a story in how you started taming, to be able to gain a bit of trust
(50-100 Word Story)The first day, I just let her explore her space on her own so she could adjust to the sights, sounds and smells of the ranch without my getting in her way. The second, I began walking past the quarantine paddock whenever I happened to be in the area - so she could start getting used to me too! She wasn't AS feral as my other Meadowdale Grells had been when they'd first arrived, seeing as she'd been living at a fully-staffed rescue agency for literal years by now, but she still kept a wary eye on me whenever I cropped up. I was a stranger. An unknown. She wasn't about to trust me without a reason to do so! It took more than a week of my making excuses to go past quarantine paddock that I was finally rewarded with the sight of her hindquarters. That is to say, she'd gotten bored enough with me to not bother turning around just because I was there. The very next day I began a new daily regimen of bringing my lunch and eating it by the fence. Many great friendships are forged by food, you see, and I hoped to entice her over to my side with ham sandwiches...
Task 6 - Started Training;Share a story on starting training. Getting used to a halter
and leading.
(50-100 Word Story)The actual TRAINING-training has always been my least favorite part of Grel ownership, but it has to be done. How else are you going to get your undead pets from one paddock to another, or too their baths, or into the barn for shelter during a storm? Yes, thee whole training thug is very importan - especially halter and lead training. Which is why I started introducing her to a halter as soon as I thought I could get away with it! As for method, I did exactly the same thing I'd done with my other Meadowdale Grels, and every last one of my Neravontii: I moved slow, letting the animal set our pace. If she objected to the proximity of the halter, I took it away. If she seemed relaxed, I carried on. It's really nothing more than a carefully calculated game of pushing boundaries! All in all, it took about a month before I could get the halter onto Baby's face for any length of time, and anothe week before I do up the buckles properly. THEN I could clip on aa lead and tackle the 'getting her to obey' part of the whole thing.
Task 3 - Introduce to a herd;Introduce the Grelifcent to your/one of your herds.
(50-100 Word Story)Voltaire's gang lived just over the hill from Baby's temporary home, so once I had earned her trust sufficiently to actually lay hands on her (and thus introduce her the concept of a halter and lead) I decided that it would be the simplest of tasks to walk her over there for a visit. Not too close at first, mind - just close enough for visual contact to be made. Voltaire can be a bit of a bully,, you see, and I didn't want to rush things! Patience was key. Therefore I moved slowly, only bringing Baby closer to the fence-line by degrees; always careful to watch all parties involved for signs of stress or hostility, and always careful to make no moves while Voltaire himself wasn't watching. Eventually, it got to the point where Baby could stretch her head over the top rail and nuzzle at Voltaire's flank without him much caring. Only THEN did I even TRY to put them in the same paddock.
Task 4 - Brush & Bathe;Share a story in brushing to clean the Grelifcent
(50-100 Word Story)It was high time to give Baby a bath! It didn't look like she'd had one in her entire life, and I was sick of not knowing exactly what colour she was. Thus I stole her and her pal Dusty away from the others and led them over to the bathing area. Once there, I tied Baby to a fence several yards away so that she could watch, and got Dusty lined up for a scrubbing. As per usual, the appy mare was downright filthy, and it took quite a bit of time to get her sorted out. Once I was done turned the spigot off and changed out my mares. Now Dusty stood several yards off and Baby was was lined up for a soaking. Since this was her fist time though, and I didn't want to stress her out, I kept the water on low and only gave her the briefest of wettings. It was hardly enough to cut through the accumulated crud! But it was a start. More could come later!
Task 5 - Fully Tamed;Share a story in how you connected with the Grelifcent
(50-100 Word Story)It takes much time and much effort to win over a Grellifcent without having your soul torn asunder - they are NOT a species for the faint of heart, or the pig-headed, or the reckless. But I'd done it several times before. And I'd done it yet again. half a year after coming to my ranch, Baby had settled in brilliantly and was finally able to call someplace home. Personality quirks aside, there were no discernible differences between her behavior and that of her heardmates. She liked me fine, appreciated my attentions, and was obedient when it came to grooming and bathing. I'd yet to train her to saddle, but I had no plans to. At least not any time soon. I had no desire to to ride her for pleasure, and with the Grelifcent community in a bit of a lull, no shows to enter in either. So she was free to spend her days doing what ever the heck it was Grelifcents did to amuse themselves. Which was, on the whole, picking on me. ;D
