      introducing rescue tolt #2!
      this tolt came from a family where it was well cared for, but due to an unfortunate accident injured its leg. the family couldn't pay for surgery to fix the tendons and so we volunteered to take the tolt and pay for the surgery, on the condition that the tolt went to a new home. the family luckily agreed! unfortunately, during surgery a complication arose, and rather than euthanize we opted to try amputation and see how it worked out. luckily, amputation went well, and after being fitted for a prosthetic this tolt is almost as good as new! obviously, this one is just a pasture pet or companion tolt, but their personality definitely makes up for it! who knows, maybe they'd make a good liberty horse!

      to adopt a rescue tolt you'll have to prove that you can provide the most ideal home for their special needs. to enter fill out the form below, and feel free to add more!

how will you help accommodate them?
will they have a companion? tell me about their first meeting;
do they have an interesting quirk? tell me a quick story about it; Amarik has a horrible tendency of chewing on things... including his prosthetic leg! Something about the material must be tasty, because scratches from his teeth mar the surface, but he's not in any obvious discomfort and walks/trots on it just fine.

how will you help accommodate her? Everyone knew something was going on when two stalls suddenly turned into one. One day over the summer a construction crew had come in, ripped down the wall, and installed a door with a double wide opening on the stall. The other horses would whisper about it, wonder what this change might mean. Were they soon going to be joined by a draft horse? Or was it simply another tolter who needed to be accommodated? They all got their answer when they weren't allowed into the main pasture for a few days due to the monstrous grading machines in it. Foals watched in wonder as those machines flattened and graded the pasture, which had once been a mess of slopes and hills and nooks and crannies to hide and play in. After the machines were gone and they were allowed back in, all those hills and slopes were gone. The pasture was flat, the only obtrusions being the roots of well established trees and a few patches of rock and sand around the pond. Then they really began to talk. Who was this new tolter? Why did the pasture have to be changed so drastically for them? Why would they need that double stall? And then there was the sling. It was installed over the course of a few hours, hung from a beam in the ceiling and anchored to the walls, light blue in color but standing out strikingly against the cherry of the barn. They would stop by that stall, the closest one to the front doors, and sniff that sling every time they passed by it. They would stare in wonder as the tolter they had all been waiting for arrived, limping into the barn on one metal and three flesh legs and into the new stall, then slipped carefully into the sling. She stayed in that sling for a few hours, moving nothing but her neck and head, perhaps a flick of her tail, tears steadily streaming, silently, down her face.

the accident;
A laugh, a happy nicker, a shrill whinny, a scream, overwhelming pain. That’s exactly how it went, in short - but you don’t want the short story. You want the long, detailed narrative of exactly what happened that day, and that’s what you’ll be getting.
“Come on, Mocha,” Chamomile said insistently, prancing her front legs impatiently. “I want to race today, and we can’t do that if you’re just eating!” She continued, walking over a few strides to nudge her friend’s shoulder. Mocha looked up, lavender eyes annoyed, still munching a mouthful of grass. Mocha was a bay sabino and older than Chamomile by about three years, and more the pasture pony type of tolter. She was also Chamomile’s best friend and name partner - what goes better together than coffee and tea?
Mocha shook out her mane, neck quivering. “If you say so,” she mumbled around the grass still hanging out of her mouth. “Just give me a minute.” Chamomile continued to wait impatiently, slowly trotting a few circles around her partner, until Mocha nodded. “Ok, where are we starting?” She asked, and Chamomile squealed happily. “The tree, over to the right,” she told Mocha, continuing her trot over and waiting for her friend to catch up. Mocha laughed as Chamomile pranced once more, legs in a flurry underneath her.
“Ready, set, go!” Chamomile shouted, letting out a happy nicker as she took off. She was finally able to run, to race her friend (who was behind her now, but not considerably slower), to have her moment of fun. Her hooves flew under her body, across the knolls of the pasture, up and down, hopping over a large groundhog hole. She heard Mocha whinny, a sharp, awful sound of warning, and turned to look back at her friend - she heard a scream, felt herself crumple to the ground, left leg searing with pain, nerves firing, tendons twisting, muscle strained and pulled - that’s when she realized the scream she had heard had been hers. Her vision went black, and Mocha’s form, tense and whinnying for help, faded from her view.
When Chamomile woke, she was in a makeshift sling in her stall. Her left leg was tingly, but still on fire with hot, awful pain - and she couldn’t move it. From mid thigh down, she couldn’t move her leg, and that scared her. She let out a choked sob, drawing the attention of Mocha, who was in the stall next to her. “Cham,” she began, voice shaking, scared. “They said you tore a tendon. Just ripped it off the muscle. That’s why you can’t move your leg. They’re going to take you to surgery to fix it, but you’re going to a new home in a few weeks as well,” she murmuring. “You’re going to get better, okay? Do it for me, Chamomile,” Mocha asked, sticking her nose over the stall divider, gently touching their noses together.
When Chamomile woke up again, this time from surgery, she was in the vet’s sling. Her left leg was numb, and she was still groggy from the anesthesia, and she didn’t think anything of the numbness until she looked down at it - it was gone. Her leg was gone. She stood, shell shocked for a minute, until she hung her head in sorrow and mourned for her leg. How would she ever walk again? Run, race across the pasture again? Mocha had said she was going to get better, but how was this any better?

how will you help accommodate them? Before our lovely lady, Elsie came to join us at Golden Hills, we checked our pastures for holes and pertruding tree roots that she could trip on and filled in the holes and removed or fenced off tree roots. We made sure that her stall is a litte wider than the others to offer her more room and comfort. The staff tore out the cement flooring of Elsie’s stall and replaced it with a softer rubber flooring to be easier on her legs. We also but down extra hay and padding to help her feel comfortable. It features a sling with extra cushioning in case she gets tired or her prosthetic is causing her pain. In addition to lots of physical therapy and special exercises, we have found that swimming is very beneficial and effective in keeping her active. On our property, there is an indoor pool and so the therapists thought possibly we could take Elsie swimming to see how she does and if she likes it or not. Many people who have leg issues keep active and healthy. Her trainers swim alongside her to encourage activity and participation. In the pool there is a shallow side where she can walk up and out of the pool so it puts no strain on her legs.

will they have a companion? tell me about their first meeting; When Elsie arrived, she was already used to the staring. She knew just to ignore it and move on. But, one mare did not stare nor act weird around her. Renae, one of our more reserved mares and she’s notorious for being more reclusive and antisocial. Renae does not go out of her way to talk to anyone so it was a shock to all of us that she befriended Elsie and approached her on her own. As Elsie limped into the arena, Renae raised her head in curiosity. The stall next to Renae was just renovated for Elsie and rumors spread throughout the stables that a special needs tolter was coming. Renae thought “This must be the tolter. I bet she’s more nervous than I was when I arrived here. I might as well go introduce myself to her. She looks nice.” Renae approached Elsie as she stood in the shade under the oak tree. Renae warmly said “Hello, may I come stand with you in the shade? It’s quite hot today and I’m starting to break a sweat haha.” Elsie looked at Renae and smiled. She said “I don’t blame you! The sun is too hot today and the trailer I just got out of was miserably hot and stuffy. What’s your name? Mine is Elsie.” Renae smiled and said “Mine is Renae. I think your stall is next to mine.” After some light bantering and hanging out in the shade, they headed to their stalls together. A friendship had been formed.

do they have an interesting quirk? tell me a quick story about it; On extremely hot days, we set out in the pasture inflatable pools filled with water for the horses to splash around in and only a couple of the tolters here will get into the pools. Usually they do not spend the whole day in the little pool. But, when Elsie approached the small pool, she hopped in and splashed in it for hours. The staff gathered around the fence to watch Elsie splash around and whinny in the small pool so we decided to bring her to the big pool to see if she would swim in it. When she saw the pool, she started jumping and pulling on her lead to get us to let go of her lead so she could jump into the pool. We led her into the walk-in shallow side of the pool then let her loose and instantly she began swimming. I changed into my swimsuit and swam with her for a couple of hours. Several staff members joined and we all chased her and played games with her. We would throw the ball across the pool and race her to get it. This was the happiest we had ever seen Elsie so instead of doing arena work, we did pool work with her and we saw her enjoy it a lot more.

Personality:
Eccentric | Bubbly | Friendly | Active
Elsie is very eccentric and lively. She loves to socialize and makes friends easily. Her bubbly personality and warm smile attracts others to her. She is always in a good mood. Elsie works great with young children due to her friendly and patient nature. She is very patient with young children and allows them to come up and pet her. She loves spending time with others and shows love and kindness to all. In the pasture, she is very active and runs around constantly. We often times have to put her in the pool when she has too much energy to burn so she doesn't hurt her leg or get sore.

    how will you help accommodate them?
    Charish will love her life, even on 3 hooves. Life completley changed after
    Charish was given her first prosthetic, and she couldn't be happier.
    will they have a companion? tell me about their first meeting;
    Charish will be accompanied by a small pony, who also shares very
    similar similarities; such as losing a leg. We call him, Carl. Yes, I know,
    pretty odd name for a pony.
    do they have an interesting quirk? tell me a quick story about it;
    They both enjoy running together, and jumping around on their prosthetics.
