*Prompt:
There are many seasons to any life, and young Dante had certainly already seen a fair share of his own. There was nothing before, however, that could have prepared him for the shift of the season that was to come. As any autumn, the earth was ripe with new smells and sights. This year, however, something was different. There was a bitter tinge to the air. Instead of the crisp scent of autumn leaves, the world to Dante almost seemed to smell of dust and decay. Fall-- the season of poetry and change felt different, far more significant than it ever had. Dante felt like there was life beneath his feet, but death at them. Maybe it wasn't the fall, Dante found himself reasoning more than once, maybe it was him. Something didn't feel right, and maybe that stemmed from himself. He wasn't really unhappy, per-say, but it felt like he needed the change that he knew should come with the change of the season.
Little did he know, he would get his change soon.
Rumors of carnival tents and attractions being set up just outside of the city limits were the absolute talk of the town. There were people, just as there always were, that complained it was a waste of time for the young ones to see the coming attractions, some from fear of the carnies, and some for the fear of fun perhaps (or at least Dante assumed). But there were many viscets intrigued by what they could hear, see, or even smell of it. The smells of foods covered in cinnamon and sugar were certainly a great enticer. And it was certainly one of the most exciting things that had happened to the town in years.
On this morning, Dante was standing with a friend an assisting him as the other young gentleman tried to sell newspapers. This, of course, wasn't Dante's job but he always found more joy in spending time with people and helping others. Besides, this kept the papers from scattering everywhere in the wind. There was also the added bonus of watching people pass by. Some might even stop and talk when they bought a paper, for a few moments. Of course with the carnival in town, it shouldn't have been a surprise that most of the conversation mentioned it. Thinking back, it also shouldn't have been surprising to see some new faces in town.
As the autumn wind whipped around, almost tugging a few papers from Dante's grasp, one of these visitors caught his attention. This man seemed to be shrouded in a mysterious aura, seeming almost ethereal even as he directed the people around him to skitter and scatter about like the leaves whipped around in the wind on the streets.
Dante's eyes followed the man as he passed. He was intrigued by him, curious more so than he had been about anything in a long time. This man held himself in a way you would expect a king to hold himself-- regal and sure. He was so out of place here, and certainly peculiar Dante thought to himself as the man passed by. At the last moment, the golden eyes of the man met his own, and Dante felt himself stiffen. There was something about the gaze, colder than he would have expected from such vibrant eyes and... almost sinister. There seemed to be some kind of knowing behind those eyes, as if the man had looked into Dante's eyes and had seen everything he needed to see. As if he knew who Dante truly was, just by a glance. Dante discomfort made him break the eye contact first, and just like that, the stranger swept past him. What had felt like an eternity had transpired in mere moments. He shivered-- and it had nothing to do with that fall wind.
He waited until the stranger was quite a ways farther down the street before speaking.
"Strange man, who do you suppose he is?"
Dante's friend turned to look at the direction the stranger had headed toward. He opened his mouth to reply, but before he could speak he was cut off by a voice as sweet as honey. Both young men turned to see a stunning viscet dressed in an outfit they could only describe as flashy and beautiful.
"That's Mr. Dark in the flesh. The owner of the carnival. Have you not heard about it?" she told them both. She seemed quite cheery, from her voice to the very way she held herself. It was so different than anyone in town and very different from the impression Dante had of this Mr. Dark fellow. Before the boys could reply, she held out sheets of paper to them with a smile-- they appeared to be fliers for the carnival covered in bright colors and whimsical text "You boys should come."
Dante wanted to decline, something in his gut screamed it, but he couldn't really find a good enough reason. Mr. Dark made him uncomfortable, but his friend knew there was no reason for him to decline, and Dante knew he was only being silly anyway. And his friend would want to hear all about it, with his evening job the poor guy wouldn't be able to go himself. He owed it to him to at least bring him a treat from it. Right? Or maybe he... wouldn't mind.
The female-- probably not much older than the two of them-- looked so crestfallen when his friend had to decline. She looked at him though, hopefully.
"I, ah..." he grimaced a moment as she smiled to him "If I can, I will." he did his best to muster up a smile. "So, will you be there?"
The female chuckled "Oh you will. Keep your eyes to the sky. That's where you'll find me." she tapped the flier "I bet you'll love it. I'll see you there!" she slipped away to hand out more fliers, leaving Dante with a lot of questions about what exactly she meant.
He watched her for a moment, dazed, before calling out to her.
"Wait! What's your name?" his face flushed a little as the whole street looked between the two of them.
"Juliette!" she replied back "I'll see you at the carnival!" she repeated, as if she knew he would be there.
Maybe, like Mr. Dark, she had really seen him too and had known that he would come.
Dante had never seen quite a woman before. His breath hitched as he watched her go. She was so vibrant-- full of life. That was something this little town sorely lacked. He had never imagined he would meet someone like her. His eyes followed her as she disappeared with a mixture of jealousy and admiration. His life was average, dull, filled to the brim with work and thoughts of survival. Watching her-- so free and daring-- twisted him up with envy that he had to work to push away.
Maybe seeing the show would take his mind off of it.
Besides, he was still very curious about what part she played in this carnival.
"Did she say... 'keep your eyes to the sky?'" His friend asked after a few silent moments "What does that even mean?"
-----------------------
It turned out Juliette meant that quite literally. She was, quite literally, in the sky. It turned out she was an acrobat-- a trapeze artist with some talent the liked Dante could have only imagined. She was beautiful, graceful, and didn't miss a step or jump the entire performance. He watched her in pure awe and wonder, just as he watched all the other attractions and performances.
The carnival was magic, he decided, but even with all the wonder and excitement around him he eventually found himself wandering. It wasn't that there wasn't enough to keep him occupied. No, the problem was there was too much. Too much of everything, of things that pulled him and made him think of his own, boring life.
He found himself stopping, simply staring at the merry-go-round before him. There was a sign, showing it was out of order. It looked fine to him, but he supposed something inside might be broken. He felt almost drawn to it.
"Ah, wishing for the simplicity of childhood, I would guess? Or is it the excitement." a voice beside Dante made him jump.
As Dante turned, he immediately recognized the golden eyes of the Carnival's namesake.
"I am Mr. Dark, but you can call me G.M., or perhaps the Illustrated Man if you like." it was then that Dante noticed the tattoos creeping out from his clothing.
"G.M.?" Dante asked after struggling for what to say.
"Some think that it stands for Grand Master. Of the carnival, they assume. Alas, they are just initials. Nothing quite so witty as that behind them. So, for my question, excitement right?"
Dante considered the question for a moment as he tried to ignore his uneasy feeling.
"I think, yeah. Maybe that is why I am here." he meant at the carnival at all, but he supposed it could also refer to him standing in this spot.
"A lot of people want to be younger. That's a lot of people's desires. Or older. Children often wish to be older." Mr. Dark replied quietly before turning to Dante again "But that's not quite it, right? You just aren't happy with where you're at. No excitement, nothing significant."
A cool, autumn wind caused Dante to shiver, just as he had before.
"Freedom from your way of life, right? You're young still but trapped here. So many feel that way, but so few are brave enough to venture away."
Mr. Dark turned to him completely, and their eyes met.
"Are you, boy, perhaps brave enough?"
"I--" Dante gritted his teeth, he could hardly believe this man-- who barely knew him-- was questioning his bravery. But he let out the breath he was holding and relaxed his defensive stance after a few moments. Even he wasn't sure of the answer. He quietly pondered for a few moments.
"I think so. I just, don't have anywhere to go. Where would even be different?"
Mr. Dark chuckled "Why, here. With the carnival. Where else would a strong, strapping, and ill-suited to the domestic life such as yourself fit in?"
Dante worried his lip a moment, considering that.
"But I don't... have some kind of grand talent." what could the skills of a factory worker-- a welder-- possibly lend to a place like this. "I know how to weld steel, not how to perform."
Mr. Dark's grin softened "Well, perhaps you could get this old merry-go-round fixed up but... I think I have another skill you could pick up. I have a sense about these things, I know exactly how you could fit in."
Dante watched as Mr. Dark held out his paw for a handshake.
"I can give you the freedom from this town you wish for deep down in your soul, take you away from the job you care little for and the life you care even less for. I can give you a new purpose, and a family. You can work for me. Do we have a deal, young man?"
Mr. Dark didn't look that much older than him.
"Quit calling me young man." Dante replied, taking G.M.'s paw in his own "And we have a deal." he shook the paw, one good, solid shake before they both let go.
"Then it's a deal."
-----------------------
Dante had known when he took the offered paw, that that night would change his life, for the better he had hoped. He had wanted that freedom so badly that in those moments he could almost physically taste it.
If he had known the price of that deal, and what kind of "freedom" he would receive on that cool, autumn day he would have found another way. Sometimes, a deal really is too good to be true.
