Robinpaw stalked through the bushes, left ear perked up. He knew how important it was to use his sense of smell and sight to make up for his right ear. He was looking for his mentor,
Nettlestar, but she was nowhere to be found. Robinpaw frowned and decided he’d try to climb a tree. He slid out his claws and gathered his haunches at the base of a sturdy oak tree. He pounced, digging his claws into the hard bark, and he slowly made his way up the tree. He got to a high branch and looked down, searching for any flashes of a brown pelt. He saw the bushes rustle below and grinned. This was it! He jumped gently from branch to branch and made his way down the tree. He looked again and then perked up his left ear, listening for any more rustling. He frowned when he didn’t hear anything and looked around, realizing that it was getting dark. He sighed and decided that he might give up, for his mentor was nowhere to be seen. He trudged back in the direction of camp, tail drooping behind him. He suddenly heard leaves shaking behind him. He whirled around and stood rigid, ready for whatever awaited him. He opened his jaw and hissed, prepared for the worst. To his surprise, his mentor jumped out of the bushes with a growl. Robinpaw hesitated, confused, and then remembered his assignment. He gathered his haunches and pounced square onto his mentor’s back, swatting at her neck with sheathed claws. Nettlestar rolled and Robinpaw pushed himself out of the way just before he was met with his mentor’s crushing weight. Nettlestar pinned him down by the neck with a paw and he wriggled, trying to get out of her grip. After a few moments of worthless struggling, he gave up and went limp to surrender.
“Why were you going back to camp?” Nettlestar asked, removing her forepaw from Robinpaw’s neck to allow him to get up. Robinpaw heaved himself off of the ground and sighed, looking at the ground.
“I gave up. I couldn’t see, hear or smell you at all!” He groaned. Nettlestar was about to retort, but he meowed, “And no, it’s not because of my bad ear! It’s just in general. I’m sorry for being disrespectful, I just.. I wish that I could see as far and as well as a hawk. No, better than a hawk. Then I could catch every piece of prey in the forest and find every herb that would help our Clan grow strong and ready for anything. And we'd never be invaded without warning!”
“I know how you feel. Don’t worry, someday you will see that you can be the greatest warrior and do all of that for your Clan without superpowers. As long as you have patience and diligence, you will achieve your greatest dreams.”
