Despite having extra time, I could't finish my writing as I scrapped over 1/3 of the writing and didn't get to finish rewriting it as I was unaware of going to all the events because of my best friend's mother passing.

Raymond was wandering around at night. He was still very young and wanted to see more of the world. So, he decided to buy bus tickets. His parents always warned him of leaving town where no one knew him. He hadn't understood, not then. The driver looked at him and smiled, until he saw the ticket, then the smile faltered a bit. Raymond took a seat in the middle of the bus, bag at his feet and tail curved around to give others room. It was late, so there weren't that many people riding. When it came time to pull out of the station, the driver asked him if he was sure he wanted to go. Raymond nodded his head.
For Raymond, his world had been made up entirely of the small city he grew up in. It wasn't quite a town, and too small to be called a proper "city". As the bus left the station, and the buildings gave way to the suburbs, and then the fields. He watched in awe as his world grew before his very eyes; small paws and nose pressed against the glass. Fields filled with cattle, grain, and horses. Here and there he saw sheep. His world grew, and grew. Then they left the fields behind, and trees rose up around him like looming giants, growing ever taller as the bus drove on.
He looked down at his ticket again, and gulped. He had picked the furthest route from his home station without transfers. The ride was supposed to take around a day, and it had been only an hour. The warnings of his parents rang loud in his ears, now. He looked at himself, and compared himself to the other viscets around him. Realization hit him then, of how different he was. His mom looked like he did, so it never really struck him that he was unusual. And still, the bus drove on. Instead of panicking, he did his best to remain calm. Then, that joy came back. He pulled a candy bar out of his bag and started munching on it.
A sound behind him caught his attention. There was a baby, a human baby, cooing in her mother's arms. She looked at him and laughed, a cheery sound. He caught his reflection in the mirror and saw that there were crumbs all over his muzzle. He wiped them off and and turned back to the baby. He made noises and silly faces while her mother tried to deal with the other child next to her. He caught the other child's attention, and said hi before babbling back at the baby. The little boy's pouting faltered a bit. The rest to of the bus ride passed pleasantly.
Raymond had brought a notebook with him to doodle in. He and the little boy passed it back and forth, drawing creatures. The mother finally had a break, as her son was now being entertained. The baby was sleeping in the carrier. Raymond found out that the boy had made this trip many times. His uncle lived on one of the farms they had passed, and they visited him often. Raymond was fascinated while he was told about horse-back riding, feeding cows and chickens, and dealing with jumping barking dogs. It had felt like little time had passed when the reached the place they were to get off at. Raymond carefully tucked his return ticket into his bag in a safe spot.
He jumped off the bus and onto the platform. He waved goodbye to his new friend, and didn't see the worried and searching look of his mother as she watched him leave alone. The first thing Raymond noticed was that it didn't look that different from home, at first. The further he got from the station, the more differences he noticed. The smell in the air, the way people and viscets moved, and the looks he got. Everyone seemed to be watching him. Even though he had put on a light jacket, his blades showed. That was because his mother had cut holes into it and mended the seams specially to keep him from tearing his clothes.
The looks varied. Some were curious, others were wary, and others showed outright fear. It made him feel scared. Cracks began to appear in how he saw the world. He walked around the street. Eventually walking in front of a fast food restaurant. He was hungry. There was a park down the street, and he walked to it. He found a bench to sit on. He pulled out the food packed, and settled on the beef sandwich. Then he noticed something. In the bushes across from he saw a tail. A viscet's tail. He carefully walked around the bushes and saw an aged viscet sleeping, wrapped in an old blanket.
Raymond felt his world come crashing down around him. The old viscet opened one eye, and watched him curiously. Feeling rather sad, and wanting to help her, he held out his sandwich. She eyed him suspiciously before slowly sitting up. She looked around, and narrowed her eyes. "Where are your parents? they wouldn't let you out here alone," she said with a hoarse voice.
"I came here alone, because I wanted to see things," he said.
She chuckled, "And what have you seen, little one? How cruel the world is? How others simply turn their backs on those in need, or turn a blind eye?"
"So? Not everyone is like that. I want to help. I want to help people," he said.
And he did. He turned his bag upside down and dumped it out, being careful of his return ticket. He gave her the candy bars, the other sandwich, and the money he was going to use to get himself a toy. She looked at him, and he didn't know what the look meant then. It would take a long time before he'd come to understand what that look meant. She walked him back to the bus station to wait for the next bus home.Extra:
Traveler
The sun beat down on his back as he moved through the grass. He looked up and felt relief when he saw the clouds in the distance.
Someone was shouting his name. It was Janet, she was waving her arms frantically at him. He turned around and walked back to the construction site. The bare earth was quickly becoming something that was recognizably a hospital. It wasn't a large one,
but it would do for the population here.
He grinned as he approached her, "Hey Janet, what's up?"
"We need you to sign off on this supply delivery. With Angelina away for the next few days, you're the only other one here who can sign off on these," she said, holding out the clipboard.
He signed off for the delivery. Raymond's chest swelled with pride as he saw them working. His break was almost over, and soon he would be back with them, putting up walls, laying wire, and hauling material. The next three months passed quickly, but he remembered all of it. Insects biting him, the smiles of everyone as they finished the hospital, the plane ride home, and the knowledge he would do it all over again. Every ache and pain was worth it.
