story:
The three youngest tolters were gathered under the darkening skies. The sooty stallion had his ears pinned as his crush, Daisy, stood with the more popular Castle.
"You gotta look," the sabino stallion laughed.
"Castle would, because he's a real stallion," the mare teased.
"Well I'm not stupid," Ciro snapped.
"Ooooh," the pair cooed.
Ciro stomped his hoof and turned his head, looking out over the fence. His tail flicked harshly.
"Fine, do it without me," he grumbled before trotting away with his head down, listening to the pair burst into laughter behind him.
He was well aware of the two glancing at him now and again. The first few times they had high heads and snorted. Ciro wanted nothing more than to walk right up to them and give them a piece of his mind, but his heart fluttered each time he looked at the pretty mare. Castle, on the other hand, deserved a good kick. Eventually, after some nervous looks, Daisy slowly made her way over to him.
"Hey, Ciro," she whispered, "you okay?"
"Yeah," he jumped and stood straight, shaking his mane into shape.
"No," she said, "I'm sorry about being a jerk."
"It was him," he replied.
There was silence between them as she leaned against him and groomed his mane; Ciro shivered with delight and thought his heart would explode from his chest.
"So-o, would you maybe," he stuttered, "uh, you know-"
"What?" she looked into his amber eyes, and he stared back, taking in every detail of her soft face.
"Want a midnight gallop with me?" he blurted out his words.
"Well," she smiled, "on one condition."
"Anything," he said.
"If you can look at the eclipse longer than Castle, then I will."
"So you'll do it, huh?" Castle snorted.
"Yep," he said as he rolled his eyes.
Daisy was silent but stayed close to Ciro's side, as the three of them watched the dark skies. Their glances got shorter as the sun and moon started to overlap.
"Alright, go," the sabino said.
The two watched the now cresent-shaped sun. It felt like forever as the air chilled, making their hairs stand and Ciro felt his heart slow. The rest of the world faded out of existence as he was lured into the sun's trance. His amber eyes burned like the ring of fire before him.
"Ciro! Ciro!" faintly echoed in his ears. All of a sudden he fell back to reality as Daisy kicked his shoulder.
"Did I win?" he asked as he blinked repeatedly.
"Yes," the mare squealed, "you looked for way too long."
"I'm good," he mumbled as green and purple lights floated across the blurred horses in front of him.
The dark stallion took a step forward on trembling legs, Castle quickly rushed to his side to support him.
"No, no," Daisy whispered with pinned ears and wide eyes, "your eyes..."
"There's nothing wrong with me," he shook his head.
"You can't see," the sabino said.
"I can, I'm looking right at you," Ciro raised his voice slightly.
"That's a tree," Daisy sighed before nudging his shoulder. Silence.
"Well, I'll get better," the stallion's voice cracked.
"Yeah, right," she mumbled.
"I'm in the mood for some hay," he smiled.
The sooty tolter took the lead, slowly wandering across the field. Castle and Daisy would bump him back on course whenever he veered away. The rest of the herd watched the young horses and the mares whispered to each other. Stood in the wooden shelter, the three ate the fresh hay spread out for them. Ciro blindly fumbled around the water trough until his nose sunk into the cold water, making him snort. As he drank, he squinted his eyes. Staring back at him was his reflection, with bleached eyes. The stallion threw his head and squealed. His heart pounded as he panicked, desperately trying to find the entrance to the shelter before bolting out across the field, until Daisy caught up to him and tugged his dark mane until he skidded to a stop.
"I'm sorry," she cried, "it's all my fault."
"Please, it's not," he rested his head on her neck.
"Ciro, forgive me," she whispered, "I'll stay with you forever, I promise."
