what their necklace means to them:
eight year old lucy's eyes shone with the intensity of the seas her father sailed on.
"papa? how did you find it?" she asks, her voice spilling with curiousity as he handed her the diamond pendant.
"the dolphins led me. you remember how i used to take you to the pier and we'd watch them roll and jump through the waters? they played alongside my ship, taking me to the wreck. only the tip of the mast was out of the water, and that's where the necklace was hanging."
lucy lit up at the mention of dolphins, they were her favorite animal, and she listened in awe to the story.
"will the dolphins visit you this time?" she wanted to know, as she eyed the bags piled behind him.
mystery lacing his words, he replied simply, "only they can know."
when lucy woke the next morning, he was gone, back on the ocean. jillian, a friend, had come over to watch her while he was away. not a day passed when lucy didn't study the necklace, fantasizing of who might have owned it before her and how the dolphins found it. it kept her occupied, but she was restless all the same, eager for her father to return and to see what he may have brought her.
at last, the time came. he was scheduled to arrive that night. jillian brought lucy down to the dock, letting her stay up late tonight.
from her seat on the ground, the young flaxen colored kalon watched as vessels came in, her eyes trained on the horizon, waiting for a certain craft to appear.
but it never did. jillian took her back, saying he would probably get back while she was asleep. the next morning, it was still only them.
jillian said nothing of it that day, nor the next. it took lucy a while to fully grasp what had happened, not wanting to believe he was gone, not wanting to believe that jillian would be the only one to tuck her in each night.
nowadays, she is a sailor as well. every voyage, she wears the necklace, and her heart skips a beat each time a dolphin appears, for she had convinced herself that they would lead her to her father.
