The Best Gift ➴
Aristarkh is, as one could guess, an aristocrat. He's rich by inheritance, and never worked a day in his life. Aristarkh lives in a village with high poverty rates. All of the townspeople respect Aristarkh, but they also know he's rich, so when the townspeople can't support themselves, they do favors for Aristarkh for money. Some of the more ambitious folk in the village with big goals work consistently for him in order to raise money. Most of them aspire to become rich and famous, and a few are just greedy, but one boy was different.
The boy in question was Aristarkh's baker. The boy had aspired to be a sailor. He stuck his nose in books far too often and knew all of the great stories of the sea, but that wasn't why he worked for Aristarkh. He had a life-threatening condition, and worked up the money for medicine. Aristarkh knew he couldn't give the boy too much extra money each day or the other villagers would complain, but twice a week he would give the boy a modest raise.
When the boy collected enough money, he was more than ready to leave permanently to receive his treatment, but had also grown attached to Aristarkh. The last day they were together was Christmas Eve. The boy didn't work that day, but instead lived for a day like Aristarkh, and had lengthy conversations with him. As a parting gift, the boy gave Aristarkh a model ship which he had built himself out of wood. It is Aristarkh's best gift because, as he had nearly everything, nobody had bothered to offer a gift before! It reminds him of the courage and good-heartedness of the boy, and he keeps it in his drawing room to admire daily.

A snowflake. Yes a very plain snowflake, but it held value. A symbol if you wish. Friendship is a gift that keeps giving is it not? This snowflake wasn't an ordinary snowflake like it was on the outside though. It held an ancient magic. You see, when I was younger I believed in spirits and magic but, as I grew older my sight grew dimmer with the way of the world. Once I saw the store my mother forced me to go in with her. You see, I did not want to go in because it was a clothes store. A ladies clothes store. Anyway, after hours of looking for a perfect outfit we finally bought most of the clothes she tried on because apparently she wanted them all. I'm not trying to be rude, but it was very interesting how she said she hated all these clothes, but still bought them. Anyway, on with the story. As we walked out a gush of wind had forced itself between us and pulled her away from me. I stood there frozen as she fell into the road. I watched as two cars were about to pass and I did the unthinkable. I raced out and pushed my mother out of the way of the speeding cars. Unfortunately I did die, but I was brought back with the ability of snow. I don’t use it often but what I do know is that the snowflake I keep with me always was a gift from a friend. A very close friend and I wish them the best. I guess this is goodbye then? Goodluck and see you around. Also, be sure to smile and things will soon go your way. It has for me, hasn’t it? Goodbye, love, hope to see you again.

It was a quiet and solemn night inside the manor, frosty and frigid outside. Nearing Christmas Edmund was, as any year, feasting with his brother and sent his servants home with a generous bonus. He preferred to do his own work around that mansion when it was the holidays; it just seemed weird to him to leave it to anyone else, he felt obligated. Edging towards midnight, the two brothers crashed on the couch watching some peculiar show about an alien species, but suddenly a knock sounded at the door. Edmund's brother was clearly out cold from a little too much liquor, so he head over to the door and peered out of the window, but no one was there. Curious, Edmund cracked open the door slowly, and he peered down to see a basket on the doorstep. Picking it up and hurrying it inside, he opened it and was smacked lightly by two little Kalon paws. Shocked that a little baby was in the basket, he made a little shriek and held a paw over his mouth, but he gained his composure and gathered up a note that was attached to it that read as follows,

"I see you folks have a little more money for wear. Do me a favor and hold onto this rascal, will you? She needs a steady home, you can provide for a plus one. Please do not give her to any adoption agencies or foster care systems, thank you, I would know first hand."

Keeping true to the stranger's words, Edmund couldn't muster enough courage to give the little Kalon up to adoption, she was a real pleasure and change of household in the manor as well as a little devil. The little Kalon also grew up to be his best friend, though he is often reminded by his servants that he should be both mentor and friend.

Hans could hear the crowd cheering as his battalion was sent off.
Mid-summer, and the humid air made his stiff uniform stick to his fur.

The army that he was a soldier for was notorious for being commanded
by a king who remained on the losing side. Maybe this time the tides
would change... Hans wasn't optimistic.

There was only so much the king could do for his small country, and
the lack of morale showed. Was the army their last hope, Hans wondered?

The battalion paused at the edge of the city. Imagine Han's surprise when
he felt a tiny weight barrel into his legs. He looked down.

The small child looked up at him with earnest eyes. With an innocently
determined look, a small object was shoved in his arms. A soft, velveteen
doll. Though usually stoic, Han's eyes widened just a fraction. "Please! A
gift- momma says that gifts must be rewarded, so bring back victory!"

He laid one gentle paw on the child's head, and she leaned into it. "Well,
who am I to deny such a gift? You shall have your victory then."

Hans clutched the doll as they made their way out of the city. The small
child watched on.

It's years later- Christmas Eve, and snow drifts on the small town, soon to
blanket the streets. Cheers deafen all other noise as the crowd watches
the successful army return.

Numerous medals adorn Han's chest. He dismounts his horse.

He spots the child in the crowd almost immediately. Still growing as it seems,
but already changed so much.

She runs up to Hans, delighted. He kneels to her eye level, and puts the worn
doll into her grasp. A weary smile adorns Han's face.

"My gift to you, dearest- Merry Christmas."

Lord Prar sighed as he tilted the crown resting between his tufts of ears. The royal ember door glistened in the light as Prar basked in the warmth the window produced. His gaze drifted off to the clouds as he sunk into his deep thoughts. Just the usual memories of his family. Once more, Prar sighed. Christmas was coming up soon and Prar had nobody to share it with. Being a Lord, you had the rights to everything in the kingdom. The wealth, fabrics, fancy diners, but being a Lord also had consequences as Prar soon found out. Due to all the busy paperwork that came with the responsibilities, there was never any time for family. Prar's butler was looking at the forlorn lord gazing at the sky with concern, tears struggling valiantly to escape the Lord's sad and depressed eyes. The small town bustled with the holiday cheer, cars raced by as the citizens milled around carrying gifts for their families. Even a female Kalon could be seen running down the street with her shopping calling for her son to come back, for he had run off in the confusion of the crowd. At this moment, the giant ember door crashed open. Lord Prar snapped to attention and frowned at the intrusion, but his heart melted as two children came racing in. Prar's two daughters ran in with his wife in tow. Lord Prar began to cry as he gathered his wife and kids into his arms, the crown falling from his head. 'Now I won't be lonely for Christmas'. Prar, a once depressed and lonely Lord who wished for his family, was now a smiling and bright Kalon who had been given the best gift he could ever ask for.
