"This handsome stallion seems to have been through some pretty rough times. From what we were able to gather, his history is a long and tragic one. He started out as a pretty highly awarded show jumper, lots of ribbons and trophies under his belt, and paperwork to back up his lovely lineage. Then one day he went missing from the owners pasture and was officially reported stolen about a week later. About a year goes by and a police investigation states that he was finally recovered from a very large and very illegal situation. He was evidently used as a stud in a livestock breeding operation, in which all of the equines were bred and sold into slaughter, and endured severe neglect and cruelty during that time. Right before the operation was busted by animal control officers, the 'owner' caught wind of what was about to go down, and in an attempt to cover up as much evidence as possible they removed anything that could possibly allow the animals to be tracked back to them - for this poor boy, that meant ripping his ear tags out, burning off his lip tattoo from his previous owner, and acid washing the brand on his hip. After all was said and done they dropped their stock off at auction and ran, but thankfully they did a poor job of removing the tattoos, so it didn't take long for authorities to find them as well as the original owners to most of the equines. Sadly after all that effort this poor boy's family had already moved on, and he was left at the auction house with his whole history wrapped up in a little folder, as if it to tell the all to common story again and again. Regardless we were happy to be able to snatch him up and bring him back to the facility, never to relive any of the events in his dreary past. He is an amazingly gentle stallion, and though he is quite skittish about having his head touched, there's not much else holding him back."

Name: Charming
Show Name: Prince Charming
Halter Color: Red

Task 1: Finding Trust
I walked into the large facility where the new SWE’s were brought in. I was soon greeted by a kind young lady who asked me if I was here for my second SWE. She brought me to his stall and showed me the folder with his history. My eyes began to tear up as I read through the tragic story of my new beloved boy. In the papers, I found his old name, Blue, but I didn’t find it to suiting. So, since I had an SWE named Cinderella, I decided to name him Charming, or Prince Charming, due to his charming coat and personality. The lady had me come back to her office to fill out some paperwork for him, and then, we were off to Willow Creek Farms.
I opened up the trailer door and walked inside the small, two stalls to retrieve Charming. I led him out into the covered round pin, but when I went to take off his halter, he threw himself up into the air, and then took a couple of steps away from me. I had forgotten that he was skittish around his head. So, I unclipped the lead rope and left the halter. I gave him a treat every time he would let me get near his head, hoping he would eventually let me pet him and take off the halter. I left the round pen, returning with grain and water. When I approached the round pen, he was standing at the gate to greet me. I gave him a treat and set the buckets down.
After Charming enjoyed his meal, I went inside to try again with the halter. As he was getting a drink, I quickly unclipped the halter, so when he raised his head, it came off. I gave him another small treat to reward him for letting me near his head.
Weeks have passed, and Charming was finally letting me pet his head. He was still skittish around new people, but I was proud of his progress so far. I was glad that I ended up with the sweet stallion that I did.

Task 2: Medical Care
I called the vet a few days earlier to have him come checkup on Charming. When he arrived, I introduced him to my big, friendly SWE. The first thing the vet noticed was the large stain from the acid removal of the label. He said it would never go away, but in the long run, it should not have any impacts on him. As the exam went on, he saw the rip in his ear, which would eventually heal as long as nothing else bothered it. He wanted to have a look at Charming’s teeth, but he was still skittish around new people. So, I had to open up his mouth so the vet could look inside. I gently grabbed his upper and lower lips and raised them open. The vet had noticed the burn mark, but it was healing nicely. Overall, Charming had good health minus those three things.

Task 3: General Rehabilitation
As the days have gone on, I have been able to put a saddle and halter on Charming. He still didn’t like bridles because his lip is still tender from the burn. So, I have ordered a bosal bridle (bridle with no bit). When that arrived, I was able to put it on to Charming. I have not yet been able to train him to be ridden again, but I plan to in the future. He has gotten a lot better with new people being around his head.
I decided it was time to introduce him to my other SWE, Cinderella. She had also been through a lot, just like him, so I thought they would make great friends. The two SWEs loved each other’s company, so I moved Charming to the stall next to her.
In the future once Charming is trained, I plan to show him once again in English and Show Jumping at local shows. I do not want to take him past local shows so that way he won’t freak out with all of the people. After his showing days, I plan to make him a stud for a couple of months before retiring him to be a therapy horse with Cinderella.
