"This stallion has quite the history to him. Our rescue team actually recognized him after he arrived back at the facility, and with a little research we were positive of his identity - the famous Sveldala Walker that had rescued his rider from a bear attack eight years ago. The article that had been written about him goes on to explain his heroic acts in defending his owner from a wild black bear that had wandered onto their woodland property in Gävleborg, Sweden. Apparently the mother bear's cub had wandered onto the porch of their cabin, and when the owner came outside to see what was scratching on the front door, mama bear went into protection mode and attacked the elderly man. Hearing his companions screams, the faithful stallion broke out of his stall and came to the rescue. While he was successful in scaring the bears away he suffered his own injuries, long tooth and claw wounds all over the right side of his face, and severe damage to his now blind eye. He was revered as a hero in the town, and as such we were all very confused as to how he ended up in an American slaughter house auction. With a little work one of our volunteers finally found the contact information for his previous owner, and found out that he had sadly passed away from a heart attack a few weeks ago. His family who had been living in the US at the time were given the equine in his will, but had no idea what to do with him, and ended up dumping him off at the auction with little thought. It was a very tragic ending for the stallion who had given everything to man kind, only to be turned away in his time of need. As such he has been very depressed and disconnected from people, though who could really blame him? We hope that with some time and TLC he will come around, and his true spirit will resurface."

Task 1 - Finding Trust

Postby _Wolfgirl_ » Wed Jan 04, 2017 2:44 pm

I watched as the stallion walked out of the trailer. His head was down and his remaining eye shinned with sorrow. He didn’t even give his new home a passing glance as I grabbed the lead from the handler. I walked him slowly back to his new stall, saddened by the fact that he showed no emotion towards anything. He was a handsome boy and did not deserve what had happened to him. I swore to myself that I would make him happy once more.

I stroked his nose as he stood in his stall but got no reaction. I could tell his previous owner’s death and then abandonment really harmed his sense of self-worth. I only hoped with love and care he would come to love it at my farm and become the heroic and fierce stallion he was known for.

I grabbed a sleeping bag and laid it in front of his stall, and I swore I saw a flash of surprise in his eye. I would be staying with him every night until he finally realized that I wouldn’t be leaving him, not until he accepted the love and care I wanted to give him.
The breakthrough occurred as I walked him to his paddock five days later, I felt my boot slip in a pile of mud. Next thing I knew I was on the ground, back throbbing in pain. With a groan I laid there, staring unseeingly up into the sky. Suddenly I heard a gentle snort, and felt a muzzle press against my face. His remaining eye seemed to shine with amusement. I couldn’t help but feel a smile break across my face. This was the first time he had voluntarily touched me and I couldn’t help but feel that this was just the start his rehabilitation.

Task 2 - Medical Care

Postby _Wolfgirl_ » Wed Jan 04, 2017 2:56 pm

The vet frowned as he studied the stallion's right eye. He had been inspecting it for the past fifteen minutes and I was starting to get worried. Finally the man grunted and told me that it had healed nicely and that the blind eye was looking healthy as it could be. He then began to speak to me about the importance of keeping the eye moist with a cream twice a day. He then proceeded to show me how to apply it before handed me the tester bottle and a script. The man also gave me another script for a medication to go over the old scars that could help decrease inflammation as a precaution. With that the older man gave the stallion a swift pat before grumbling a goodbye.

As the vet spoke I watched as the brave stallion bobbed his head and turned it around to gaze at his surroundings. I was happy that he was finally starting to show off his old spirit, even he did have days when he still fell into a major depression. He still had a ways to go but I knew now that he would be able to live out the rest of his life happy.

Task 3 - General Rehabilitation

Postby _Wolfgirl_ » Wed Jan 04, 2017 3:28 pm

I had decided to name the stallion Jodurr, which was Icelandic for guardian. His show name was picked by a young girl who often visited the farm to do horseback physical therapy. She said he should be called The Golden Knight, as his gold eye now always seems to shine with happiness.

After many months, Jodurr has now become a therapy horse, taken to different places to meet kids and to share his story (or just flocked to at the farm by visitors). He is very much spoiled and loved upon, but he has deserved it. Since he gained his spirit back, he has even become close to some of the other Sveldala Walkers at the farm. He is almost inseparable from another stallion named Caesar. He still has days where his depression pops back up but normally either the children, Caesar, or I can snap him out of it with some love and care. There are some times when we can’t, but he normally emerges out of it on his own after a couple hours. Someone is always standing by him during these times. I understand since we all have those days. He has been through a lot, and I am just proud that he has come as far as he has. One major hardship Jodurr has been having, is that he is spooking because of loud noises on his right side, but we have been slowly working with him to adapt. He is coming along great. Jodurr is a true success story and a hero among Sveldala Walkers. I can’t be prouder to now be his friend and owner.
