"This sweet little mare has been a total champ throughout the entire rescue process. According to her very sweet drop off note she was originally a beloved family equine, mainly belonging to their two young children, before a tragic death in the family caused them to have to rehome her. How she ended up in an auction like this no one really knows, but its obvious she retained all the wonderful mannerisms from her previous life. It wasnt until after she was transported back the the SWE center that the rescuers realized she was deaf - not that she seems to mind. This may make training and bonding slightly more difficult, but like many deaf horses she could easily learn (or may already know) certain sign language signals. "

Holy cow, she's absolutely gorgeous! ;u;

Show Name: Love Isn't Always Spoken
Barn Name: Carys (means "love" in Welch)
Halter Color: Pale magenta, to match her eyes

Task One: Finding Trust
After unloading her from the trailer, the other SWEs at the ranch came walking and trotting over to meet her. Carys became ever so slightly jumpy around the other unfamiliar horses, being used to the last while she had spent with shivering, terrified horses. She soon calmed down, becoming attached to the young filly Sunny, staying by her and her mother's side. Here with her new family, she seemed content. After letting her relax for a few days to get to know the herd, it came time for me to get to know her.

The third day of her being on the ranch was the day I planned to personally get to know this sweet girl. I calmly and slowly came to her, letting her smell my hand and know who I was before putting the halter on her. She seemed hesitant when I went to put on the halter, but after a few calming strokes on her neck, she relaxed. Her tail flicked gently from side to side, her contentment showing, so I hooked a lead up to her and guided her to the training pen. Once inside the pen, I indicated go with my right hand, while holding the lead up with my left, and she started a clean trot to the left. Switching hands with the lead, I now indicated in a motion to the right, holding the lead up in my right hand, and she switched directions and began trotting to the right. After going around a few times, I motioned "stop" to Carys, and she stopped. She sure seemed to remember her days of being a loved friend, and it was all coming back to her.

Task Two: Medical Care
Upon gaining basic trust, it became vital to discover what caused Carys' deafness. After her 5th day at the ranch, I packed her back up into the trailer and went to the large animal vet that I had been going to for quite some time now for my other SWEs. I explained the situation to the doctor, and she had a BAER test ordered, as well as a check-up, to see how severe the hearing loss was. After the BAER test was finished, and the results came back showing complete hearing loss, the doctor checked on Carys' ears. Upon looking at them, she noticed some inflamed skin, as well as some scabs, and diagnosed her hearing loss as that of an infection caused by biting flies, most likely which had happened at the auction house. The bites were still infected, so the doctor prescribed a topical antibiotic ointment to take away the infection, even though the damage was permanent, instructing me to apply it daily. She also advised me to put on an ear covering bonnet or possibly some bug repellant to keep the flies away while the infection healed.

Now, after about a month of being with Carys, her infection gone, she's a chipper girl to have around the ranch.
