SWE-RE 073 - Sable Dun Tovero

Rescued from the event.
"This sweet young colt was brought into auction with his mother, likely a duo from a backyard breeding group. He has a pretty bad case of heaves from being locked in the dirty stalls for such a long period of time and has some genetic deformations in his teeth so a vet will need to float them sooner rather than later, and most likely continue to do so frequently. Despite everything he does seem to have a pretty positive outlook on life and gets along very well with our staff."

Task One: Finding Trust

Postby Queen Vivane » Fri Dec 09, 2016 10:51 am

The sable dun colt in the back of the stall gazed at me with intense pink eyes. It wasn't fear that had him standing in the shadows but a calculating wariness. I could easily hear the wheezing as he breathed in and out, the discharge from his noise was quite visible as well. Of course the staff here had done as much as they could to help treat the nasty case of heaves he was sadly suffering from, still they couldn't afford to spend as much time as was necessary. There were plenty of others rescued from various other places that needed just as more or even more care than he did.

I made no moves as he came forward and snuffled curiously at my crossed arms which I'd rested on the door of his stall simply allowing him to investigate as he pleased. Rather than reaching out and possibly startling him, I slowly uncurled the fingers of my right hand and turned it over. The velvety muzzle moved over my fingers carefully smelling each one and taking in the scent of the various equines I'd cared for and sorted out that morning. He gently lipped my palm and I smiled in response, the poor guy hadn't been in the best of places but he was still willing to give people a chance.

It always warmed my heart when rescues decided people weren't all bad and let them know that they were willing to trust again. Moving back slightly I uncrossed my arms and held my left hand to the SWE; who eyed it warily for a few moments before his neck stretched out and he gently snaffled up the polo I'd hidden in my closed fist.

Task Two: Medical Care

Postby Queen Vivane » Fri Dec 16, 2016 6:32 am

Leaning my back against the sun warmed wood of the stall door, I fished my phone out of my pocket and moments later had my go to vet on the line.

"Yeah it's me, listen I need you to come look at a horse for me and before you start yes it's another rescue. Just how soon can you get here? Really, that fast? Oh I see, that's not that far from here. Alright see you in a few." I ended the call and waited for her to arrive. It wasn't too long before the familiar hardy form of Mab's black range rover showed up.

"Alright take me to this new charge of yours" Mab grumbled with a smile, tucking a lock of her short black hair behind her ear as she grabbed her bag from the back of the car. I gestured for her to follow me and together we made our way to the isolation stall. The still nameless sable dun colt stuck his head over the door and nickered a greeting at us.

He back up when I opened the door and stood surprisingly quietly as Mab listened to his heart and checked various important parts such as his hooves, eyes and teeth. The dark haired woman tutted quietly as she patted the colt on the neck and returned her equipment to her bag.

"His hooves are alright, could use a bit of a trim but other than that there's nothing to worry about there. His teeth will need floating and I'm probably going to have come and do them every few weeks. There's also the fact he's suffering from a nasty case of heaves which I see you've already started working on judging by his bedding. Now I'm thinking that your probably going to want to want to get him on the best meds possible and I can get the aerosol forms and devices needed." I paid careful attention to Mab as she spoke, mentally jotting down notes and such on the most important parts.

I scheduled an appointment for her to return and sort out the colts teeth then bade her farewell.

Task Three: General Rehabilitation

Postby Queen Vivane » Mon Jan 02, 2017 8:46 am

We walked together, the leadrope attached to his headcollar held loosely in my hands. He wasn't quite up for lengthy exercise quite yet so nice steady walks with short trot bursts around the pre-dampened indoor ring were a must. The colt seemed to enjoy our daily walks, it got him out of his stall and let him stretch his legs a bit. Soon I'd start letting him wander free in the ring so he could do his own thing but for now he seemed content to just meander along beside me, stopping occasionally to investigate the walls or floor.

I covered my mouth with my free hand as a jaw cracking yawn made itself known. I'd gotten into the habit of sleeping out in the barn wen I had a new rescue to take care of, especially the ones that had need of medical treatment. The nights spent curled up in straw would be worth it once I got the sable dun colt to a good state; he'd never be perfect what with the heaves and all but with proper treatment he'd make a good schooling horse.

Shaking myself from my daze I gently urged him into a trot and jogged alongside him, as he moved. His gait was naturally quite smooth with just a hint of bounce to it. I paid attention to the sound of his breathing and was relieved to hear only the normal breathing rate of a horse freshly burst into trot, no wheezing or any other sign that the heaves were troubling him.
