Kalons-- a species with soft manes and even softer hearts.
Monitored in forests across the globe for years, these animals
have recently been declared naturally tame as well as sentient.
Scientists are asking the general population to consider adopting
Kalons for further study in their capabilities of intelligence.

To anyone else, working the night shift would have probably been a nightmare.
Louisa had grown accustomed to it in her years of working register at the local 7-11. Her friends called her a vampire, and for good reason- she never seemed to go out during the day. Of course, that was more because of her strange sleep schedule than burning up in the sun. If she was awake in the middle of the day, that was to her as two AM was to everyone else. Why she chose to work the night shift in the first place, nobody knows- though, presumably, it had something to do with either more job openings or the fact there were less cars on the road to hit due to her abysmal driving skills.
Tonight, All Hallow's Eve (as she insisted it be called for aesthetic purposes), she was once again at work manning the register. Just as the storefront had been crudely decorated with paper cutouts of pumpkins, she too had gotten in on the cheap costume trend. Namely, a simple black and red cape. Her friends had joked that she didn't even need the fake fangs because of her silly overbite. Internally she wished time travel was a thing, so she could have gone back and shaken her child self when she had told her mother she didn't need braces, just to avoid that conversation. Or to make better friends.
About 1:30 AM, in came a guy who was clearly distraught. He made a mad dash for the candy isle, quickly returning with an entire display box full of Snickers candy bars. They were having a little sale on them, only a dollar apiece. She knew from experience there were precisely three dozen of them per box. When he set the box on the counter, she hardly even had to ring them up.
"That'll be #ef91918.52, sir."
"Oh, thank you so much! My wife, she- she gave out all the little ones to the kids, even though I told her to save some for me." He placed two twenties on the counter.
"Mmm. I see." It was the most disinterested she could make it. She went about getting his change.
"I just can't go on without my-" The male Kalon paused a moment, before his pupils widened at her. "S-say, you're not a- a vampire, are you?" Strangely enough, the man seemed legitimately terrified at the possibility. Someone hadn't informed this adult guy that Vampires were very definitely Not Real.
That didn't mean it wasn't funny, though.
"Rahr." Louisa tried, not any more interested than before. His tail between his legs and his purchase safely tucked under one arm, her customer squeaked and ran out the door, clearly terrified of the "vampire" cashier. He didn't bother to wait for his change. After a quick chuckle, Louisa pocketed it. That could be her tip for putting up with this job.
And that was the day she became a vampire for a dollar and fourty eight cents.
