#497 Iron Grey

Postby tynahi » Sun Oct 02, 2016 3:27 pm

This boy and his older sister were found wandering the plains alone. She seems to be around 5 years old and her brother is a 2 year old. Both were found with strange brandings. The mare has a limp, is malnourished and is very skittish. The stallion seems to be blind, has deep cuts on his shoulder and rump and is very stubborn but tries to cling to his sister. Maybe you can convince one of them to come home with you?

    w ow-

    Username: legend-
    Partners Name:novak
Name: Pillars of Creation - Hah
    Gender: Stallion
    Eye Color: Pale Jade [Blind]
Coat Color: Iron Grey [Black Base] Splash
    Personality:
Hah is a destructive boy. Learning how to grow up with his blindness, he was not the happiest colt. In time by himself and with his sister always by his side, he found a way to coop and learn how to use it to his advantage. Instead of wanting to be like everyone else, Hah ended up being a clever stallion. He interacted with the world using the other five senses: hearing, feeling, smelling, tasting, and thinking. Even though he might be better than the others, Hah still happens to be arrogant and conceited. With a rough outer shell, he can be a sweetheart, especially around foals. If you ask him what his favorite part of his herd is, his train of thought would go directly to the newborns, yet he would never admit it. Overall, Hah is the ideal leader. Intelligent in unusual ways, he might think too much but knows how to talk himself through a conversation of all types. Being blind, he has to have good judgment skills. In times of a second opinion, he doesn't hesitate to ask Loralei- not just because she's intelligent or another perspective, it's because he trusts her.
Whats her Relationship with his Sister like?:
It's not the stereotypical sibling relationship between Loralei and Hah, yet it is. Together they are as hectic as a tornado but they are at their best when like this. Even with the rough playfulness, they treat each other with such respect, or at least Hah does. When it comes to their arguments, you better stay out of the way. Always trying to beat the other one up verbally. Loralei and Hah having a regular discussion is rare among the two but it has been sighted. The siblings are so opposite they are similar and having them think alike gives them so many advantages- both intelligent, but different perspectives.
    What Happened to Them:
For centuries, their ancient herd took home to the land of Australia with peace among other species and themselves. Hah took great honor of being descent from the original horses of his herd; that all changed when their friends and family had a rebellious thought. Ever since the tragic event, Hah never talked about it truthfully. Always fibbing it was horse against man, he was ashamed of who he was. Narrating what truly happened, roles have always been switched. The rightful species of the land (home-liars) and the humans who wanted it (free-lancers). Mustangs of his herd have always been told the truth of the land: the history, major events, and especially when the humans took their place in the world. Mankind believed they were at the top of the world- being able to command and control anything to get what they desired, and they wanted their land. The war was long and scarred the land he once called home. While the humans took control over what they had always wanted, but did not earn, he and his sister were sent off to America to find a new meaning.
What Do You Think the Brands Means?:
Like his sister, they have three dots on their right cheek resembling each other, although, Hah's is a bit different. Everyone in their herd is taught at some point what each one of their tribal markings mean. Some mustangs have only one dot on their right cheek for minimal training or a dash on the forehead as queen. Hah's upside down triangle line up proves he is a stallion. Each one of his cheek dots shows his bloodline (royalty), level of training, & his mating rights; his star makes him the heir. Shoulder brandings are not given to a mustang of the herd until a later time. Every line and dot provides valuable info of that equines temperate and danger level, sometimes even their possible education.
What kind of patterning would you like to see on him?:
None. In the beginning of their herd, it was frowned upon if a horses coat was hiding. Having no markings or very little at all was seen as a promising sign of luck for the herd or land. Both offspring of the King and Queen having almost no markings at all was a fortuity.
How do you deal with his Blindness:
The two siblings were going to be separated, but due to the stallions defect, the mare will be his eyes. While Hah has learned how to deal with the world using other senses, as well as trusting people and other horses, he no longer needs Loralei at times.
How do you deal with his Cuts:
The first act was to take him to a vet. The cuts would then be cleaned well and bandaged with a daily check up. Hah is very sensitive about his scars and having them touched will bother him greatly; the reminder that he has had wounds bring back the unwanted memories.
How do you deal with her Stubborn and Clinginess:
Due to her relationship with Hah and attitude, she is either always near him or taken to visit each other on a daily basis. We felt there is no other way to make sure that they know the other sibling is taking care of will always be given a chance to see the other.
What discipline would he excel in?:
Even being blind, Hah is capable of so much; since Hah has come to America, he has done very well in Combined Driving. In a team of four pulling a single carriage, he has learned even more than he thought he could just in this discipline. He communicates well with the driver and other horses, which is key to trusting them in the situation Hah is in. Although he and his team do not compete competitively, they do this activity for the state as an event of pure fun every year.

Partnered with Chemchem the magnificent! Lo and behold my half..

Username: HowlingHooves
Partners Name: chemical (xxx)
Name: Blink Not Once || Drogo (meaning phantom, Slavic.)
Gender: Stallion
Eye Color: Pale Jade [Blind]
Coat Color: Iron Grey [Black Base] Splash
Personality: Drogo is honest, a little timid in his blindness but never fails to show his true opinion. He's nervous, and always seems as though he's on alert, but beneath the skittishness he's soft spoken and rarely wishes to harm another. His stubborn streak ends as soon as he realizes that who he is with holds no ill intentions, and Drogo often finds the ones he becomes friends with are eternal, vauling his opinion despite his clear disability. He's calm and forever patient when he feels safe, never raises his voice to another, but he finds he feels far more lost and alone in his dark world when he cannot find his sister.
Whats her Relationship with his Sister like?:
Out of the two, Drogo is the more forgiving and understanding; he's reminded each day as the sun sets and rises that he is at fault, that his blindness is what will likely lead he and his sister to their demise. Drogo doesn't blame his sister for feeling so angry toward him, he doesn't find fault in her thinking he's a burden because he knows that he is, but he also knows that he can still trust his beloved sister to keep him from walking right over a cliff. His trust in her, though often misplaced due to their general stances on things, has never been able to be swayed one way or another; it is steadfast and unbreakable, and -- is grateful she has not simply left him to his death.
What Happened to Them:
What Do You Think the Brands Means?:
Left Shoulder Brand: Thought to be a brand given to a horse, once it has matured, to indicate the level of experience that would be needed to handle and train the horse. It seems Drogo was branded to indicate he needed a handler with a moderate amount of experience, likely due to his nervous tendencies.

Right Shoulder Brand: Thought to be an indicator as to whether the horse should be bred or not. Drop was branded tonshow he was not to be bred, likely due to his blindness. Which also tells that he was born blind, and did not become blind from an injury, maybe.

Cheek Brand: Thought to be an indicator tracing back to the horses Sire. Due to both siblings holding differing brands, it is believed their sires were different but they shared the same dam, making them half-siblings.
What kind of patterning would you like to see on him?:
This or something similar, but the splash continuing up his neck to give him a bald face.
How do you deal with his Blindness:
Drogo would be introduced to a partner, a sort of seeing eye horse that would remain with him; if the two do not take to each other we can try again, however many times are needed until he feels most comfortable. He will be allowed to roam in a small paddock, with a safe smooth wire fencing to avoid any potential injuries that could be caused by bar wire or electric fences; the paddock will be cleared of all large rocks, any fallen debris and holes will be filled in and regularly checked for more to avoid hooves being caught or falls. Flags will be attached to fence posts to give him an sort of map of where the fence line is, and when being introduced to the paddock a walk around will be given to assist in him being able to know his surroundings. And trees will be trimmed for low hanging branches, and any poles or other such things will be fenced in a triangle shape with posts to avoid him running into them and injuring himself.
Drogo will be given ample time to adjust to his new surroundings as needed, and to help with the adjustment he will always be able to hear the person working with him. With the hopes of gaining his trust, speaking to him and touching him will further help in his adjusting to his new home.
How do you deal with his Cuts:
Due to his anxiety when away from his sister, Drogo would need light sedation in order for the vet to take a closer and more in depth look at his wounds; once that has been done, he'll be cross tied while the edges of the cuts are shaved, then they will be cleaned with warm water; if the vet finds them deep enough to need sutures, they cuts will be stitched closed. Afterward an antiseptic ointment will be applied and he'll be taken to a stall to keep him from possibly tearing them further, or adding more injury to his self accidentally, while they heal. Drogo will be given antibiotics to prevent any infection, will be given a tetanus shot due to not knowing if has ever received one, and his cuts will be dressed in a light bandage to help quicken the healing process.
How do you deal with her Stubborn and Clinginess:
It would be, in essence, a sort of clean break; seeing as his stubbornness stems from feeling he needs his sister in order to survive; their separation would need to be gentle but firm. Separation by gradual amounts would be best for his calmer, more timid personality until a suitable friend can be matched with him, first by a fence and building up from there until both can be sepearted and Drogo can feel secure without his sister. As soon as he does feel such, his clinging to her should likely abate; if it so happens he clings to another he would be worked with at an easy pace until he can feel confident in his own remaining senses and therefore not rely on another as harshly as he does his sibling or the next person he latches onto. He will never be left on his own, however, due to his blindness; another partner that can help him will always be needed, and he'll be matched with only those both Drogo gets along with and they with him.
What discipline would he excel in?:
It would likely be a quieter, simple one; despite his obvious musculature that would do well in jumping, he simply lacks the training he would need to realize what exactly he is doing. Drogo would, however, make for a wonderful prospect for disabled riding classes with his calm and patient personality once he has been properly handled and trained.

Partners Name: Isabella45 | x
Name: Ares || "God of War"
Gender: Stallion
Eye Color: Pale Jade [Blind]
Coat Color: Iron Grey [Black Base] Splash

Personality:
Ares seems to be a very stubborn colt. Even tho his sister Maristela means well, he doesn't always agree with her being so protective over him. Thus him being a little rebelious at times. Ares can also be a real goof, most likely developed due to his sis being almost always very serious.
He doesn't really want to give his sister a hard time, but sometimes he just wants to cut loose of her protectiveness and go on his own little adventure, even tho he is still pretty clingy towards her. He wants to be on his own sometimes, but still finds that a little scary, because of his partial blindness.

Whats his Relationship with his Sister like?:
Ares doesn't know any better than being raised by his sister. He sees her more as a motherly figure than a sister. Maristela is very protective over him. Thus almost never leaving each other out of sight and stay close to each other. Sometimes he just wants to ignore her tho, as her protectiveness can be a bit much at times. Their bond is rock solid due to what they have been through.

What Happened to Them:
Maristela and Ares were born into an illegal breeding program.
Not shortly after Ares was born his mother had an oppertunity to escape and she took it, how painful it was for her to leave her foals, she just couldn't bear the pain the owners inflicted on her anymore. Thus leaving Ares and his sister all by themselves.
It didn't take long for the owners to mistreat Ares aswell. One night the owners tried to take Ares away from Maristela, because they saw breeding potential in him, but it didn't go quite as well. Maristela being really protective over her little brother defended him with all the power she had. This violent struggle eventually led to an unforseen event. Ares got wipped on his shoulders and rump leaving huge cuts and resulted in him panicking. Things happened so quickly that they couldn't stop him from running his head into a barb-wired fence. Resulting in him going partially blind.

What Do You Think the Brands Means?:
The cheek brand seemed to be an indicator on what year they were born. Aka, it presents their age.

The shoulder brand looks like a branding of ownership, most likely to who the horse was going to be sold to before they were rescued.

What kind of patterning would you like to see on him?:
Overo

How do you deal with his Blindness:
The vet diagnosed him as being partially blind.
We will be hooking him up with a partner and stall/paddock buddy to guide him around. Ofcourse it also depends on how he bonds with his new buddy. It will probably be one of the dogs that roam around the stables.
Within the first few weeks we will closely monitor his behavior and stay close to him, to see of he connects well with the dog and isn't scared of it. If all succeeds he will have a new buddy serving as a guide.

How do you deal with his Cuts:
We will cleanse his wounds to prevent further infections, give him some antibiotics and stitch the cuts that are too deep to heal on their own. We will be checking the wounds on a daily basis to see if it heals well.

How do you deal with his Stubborn and Clinginess:
Due to him still being a 2 year old colt, we will attempt to train him with horseman ship. We will use this method because of his history. Horsemanship means having to build a trusting bond and doesn't require too much contact. He can walk around loosely without any restraints other than being in a round pen.
We hope to see that with this method of training he will slowly lose his stubbornness.
As for his clinginess, we will slowly seperate him from his sister to avoid him being traumatized and so he can get used to being on his own or atleast without his sister. He will actually never really be alone due to his blindness.

What discipline would he excel in?:
He does seem to have potential in Dressage as his movements look really smooth. If the training doesn't take due to his partial blindness and having to fully trust it's rider we will train him in Horsemanship, even tho technically it isn't a discipline.

Settling and making friends [extra]:
We have been working hard with Ares since he arrived on our ranch and he has come a long way since he was rescued.
We worked hard on getting him being able to get to the point that he didn't had any more trouble being without his sister. This took us a while and we almost thought it would never work. That's why we decided to introduce him to our ranch dog Irish and they have been best buddies since. We were really happy it immediately clicked between Irish and Ares. Irish guiding him around the ranch, being his eyes. Thus leaving us without worries that he wouldn't settle down on the ranch and not knowing his way.
Our horses that roamed in a herd around the ranch seemed really interested in this new horse and they often came by to take a look on what was going on with this new horse. Ares had settled down enough to be finally introduced to the herd. It was a scary sight at first, but thanks to his buddy Irish he knew everything was alright. It didn't take long for Ares to be accepted in the herd and eventually it was time for them to go on their way. Ares happily galloping along with the rest of the herd with his buddy Irish beside him.
