New name:Yuuki
(temporary name-Farah)
If you gave her a new name explain why:Farah woke up in the park with no idea who she was. She couldn’t remember her name, or her family, or how she’d gotten to Earth. Marisol and her dads gave Farah a place to stay while she attempted to regain her memories. They called her Farah because it means traveler. The doctor they took her to said only time could return her memories. Though familiar experiences might help jog her memory.
Marisol and her family were very welcoming hosts and reassured Farah that she wasn’t being an inconvenience whenever she brought it up. She was grateful for their kindness and generosity. She’d always get tongue tied and embarrassed when she tried to say as much, but Xavier and Barbas would smile and tell her they were happy to help. Farah and Marisol became really fast friends. They would stay up late into the night talking and listening to Marisol’s stories and Farah wondering at the oddities of Earth. They stayed up so late that Xavier had to stick his head in on more than one occasion and ask them to quiet down so he and Barbas could sleep. Marisol spent a lot of time showing her around and doing things to try and jog Farah’s memory. Marisol taught her to cook and she joined Marisol and her dads for movie nights. Her favorite so far is How to Train Your Dragon. They hung out at the park a lot but Marisol also took her swimming, to the library, the movies, the zoo, and even on a hot air balloon ride.
Marisol had been working during the summer washing dishes at Applebee’s and begged her dads to let them go, saying she’d pay for one of the tickets. Marisol thought being up high could remind Farah of arriving on Earth. She also thought it would be really fun! Her dads thought it was worth a shot and helped pay for their tickets. Farah loved the balloon ride. It was exhilarating to be up so high and she loved looking at the Earth from a bird’s eye view. She couldn’t stop smiling the whole time. She loved the wind and the sound and the sense of freedom. It was the closest she’s come to remembering who she was.
Farah was astounded when Marisol showed her the internet. She remembers the technology they had on her home planet, and none of it was quite like the world wide web. Smart phones were also quite interesting to her. They had devices that performed similar functions on her planet. But what was amazing to her was that earth could have the technology to make touch screens and video phones like them, but not hover technology or mass produced space ships.
Farah never did recover her memories. She’d get images and feelings, or sometimes a snippet of conversations, but she couldn’t put them together into a coherent picture. It was Marisol who suggested she take a new name, one night as they sat on the couch after dinner, Xavier washing dishes and Barbas working at the desk in the corner. They’d been calling her Farah the past two months, instead of Jane Doe like the police and hospital workers, feeling it was more personal and humanizing. But all this time she’d been hoping she could at least remember her name. She would have loved to remember her family and friends, remember if she even
had friends, but she would have settled for her name. Marisol suggested Risa, which means “laughter” in Spanish, or Dulce, because it means “sweet.” She decided to take the name Yuuki, meaning “gentleness” and “hope.” Marisol agreed that it fit her quiet strength and sense of optimism.
