Hinley
Sima gender:
Female
What is it this sima holds precious:
HInley values her spirit guides.
Why is that:
Hinley cherishes her relationship with her spirit guides because their guidance led her to find her calling in life. Being a warrior has brought her a lot of joy and she finds the lifestyle very fulfilling. Her path as a warrior allows her to protect those who cannot protect themselves. Her work guarding the towns also creates a place of safety for others, and she finds that knowledge very rewarding.
Her mother taught her how to find her spirit guides when she was about six years old. And Hinley is so glad she did. Spirit guides communicate with people because they have lessons to teach or messages to impart to help them grow as a person. Hinley’s first spirit guide is Ariane (a-ree-AHN) the bear. She is especially cherished by Hinley because she has been her lifelong companion. She first appeared to Hinley when her mother was guiding her through a meditation exercise to reveal one’s spirit guide. Ariane is her life spirit guide. So she embodies Hinley’s courage, strength, devotion, and fearlessness. She also reflects Hinely’s hubris and impulsiveness, and reminds her to balance these impulses with humility and thoughtfulness. Ariane is her friend, she supports her and helps her to be the best person she can be. Ariane isn’t Hinley’s only spirit guide. People may have many spirit guides, all imparting different wisdoms, throughout their lives. Some stay with the person for years while others may deliver their message and then disappear. One of her other guides is Renatus, and she valued his guidance just as much as Ariane’s.
Hinley was training to be a healer, when Renatus began speaking to her. They told her that her purpose in life wasn’t to be a healer, but a warrior. Hinley was confused at first. How could she be a warrior when she had been chosen from a young age to be a healer and mage? But she trusted her guides, and so set out to find a place that would teach her to be a warrior. She traveled to the garrison at the nearest large village and requested to be trained as a soldier. The soldiers stationed at the garrison laughed at her. She must have seemed quite odd, this dust covered young woman, slim of build, with a stubborn expression barging into their hall. Hinley did not let them discourage her though. And, with Renatus’s encouragement echoing in her mind, she convinced them to let her join the initiates.
She found the training arduous at first. Her years learning the uses of herbs and spells had focused more on her mental capabilities than her physical ones. But she didn’t give up. She knew that Renatus would not have come to her if being a warrior wasn’t important, so she persevered. The other initiates teased her, not just for her initial lack of physicality, but also because she was a fifteen year old training amongst ten year olds who had been training for this role since they could walk. Hinley did not let her disadvantage discourage her. She drew strength from Ariane’s support and Renatus’s assurance that this was something that she needed to do. After a few months it became clear to Hinley why.
She loved the training and that it would allow her to protect the simas in her tribe. She began to excel in her studies. She was naturally swift and her training as a healer had taught her how to make important decisions quickly. The choices she made weren’t always ones her instructors or classmates agreed with. In battle she came up with creative strategies, but she tended to act on them impulsively. If no other’s would help in her plans, she’d sometimes execute them alone because she meant well and was convinced her strategy would bring about the best outcome. A lot of the times she’d be right, but her superiors still said she was reckless and insubordinate.
Ariane is a constant presence in Hinley’s life, always walking beside her, though she doesn’t always speak. She counsels Hinley when her hubris or recklessness may lead her down undesirable paths. It’s a part of who she is, but learning to recognize when she really doesn’t know best and when to be pragmatic are things she must work on every day in order to live to her fullest potential. With both of their help she completed her training and became a soldier, one of the most proficient in her class. Now Hinley travels between towns as a garrison soldier and is sometimes called upon to join the army’s campaigns. She would not have the life she does now without her spirit guides.
