He's basically a moody and somewhat antisocial vaiki until he really gets to know someone well. He doesn't really enjoy talking unless it's about one of about few subjects he's actually interested in and hates being interrupted from his thoughts. However, he is very passionate about fish can will happily drop everything to talk about them. Ryu is a fish-lord but also works as a marine biologist during the time he is not preforming his fish-lord duties. His favorite species of fish is the salmon and he becomes quite offended when someone tries to eat them. He also likes puns, has a rather immature sense of humor and enjoys joking around with friends.
Ryu's relationship with Haru actually started with a terrible accident. The fish-lord accidentally destroyed Haru's old home when he broke a dam to help the salmon during one of their annual salmon runs. He hadn't realized the river would flood or that there was a small town just below the hill where the dam had been. The result was catastrophic and Haru was the only survivor. This incident nearly destroyed Ryu and he promised to take in and care for Haru in repayment for what he had done. At first, Haru was basically just a servant and apprentice to Ryu but he somehow managed to win Ryu's heart rather quickly. They became friends and that eventually turned into something more. About a year and a half after the incident with the village, Ryu and Haru were married. Haru has long since forgiven Ryu for what happened as he knows it was an accident and that Ryu still feels awful about it.
As a parent, Ryu is actually more like a mother than a father in some ways. He is the one who is always fussing over something and making sure the children have everything they need each day. Before heading off to work, Ryu fixes breakfast for everyone and makes sure to spend at least an hour with the kids before he has to go. Although, he's been working a lot less since the kids were born and even took leave from his marine biology job to make more time for the children. One thing Ryu hates though is when he has to involve his children in his fish-lord duties. He feels that they are far too young to be worrying about adult business and tries to leave them with Haru when he can get away with it.
He's a quiet, nature loving vaiki who is up at dawn and goes to bed right after sunset. Haru loves sleeping and often takes naps in a variety of odd places, having even gotten stuck a time or two. He has been called lazy on more than one occasion but that doesn't bother Haru very much. He's also never been one to care about other people's opinions of him. His favorite activities include hide and seek, or hide and sleep if he is the one doing the hiding, collecting and drinking the morning dew and watching the sun set in the evenings.
Haru's relationship with his mate Ryu is a rather odd one. Although they are happily married and very close with each other, Haru actually acts as Ryu's servant in public. This is mostly to preserve Ryu's reputation though as he is a fish-lord and has certain standards other vaiki expect him to uphold. Falling in love with a non fish-lord vaiki would not be accepted and the pair would likely be driven out of their territory. However, Haru doesn't really mind playing servant and is actually the one who wears the figurative pants in the relationship. He is often telling Ryu off for one thing or another and is not afraid to speak his mind, no matter what the situation is at the time.
As a parent, Haru is fairly laid back and doesn't get mad easily. He is patient and always tries to give the children a chance to explain themselves if they do something wrong. However, he is not one to be disrespected or pushed around and expects his children to at least follow the few rules he does have. There are only three main rules in their house and Haru considers them to be very reasonable and even quite lenient. The only times he will really get mad is if one of the kids knowingly breaks one of these rules. These rules are very simple and written on large stone near the small hut where they make their home.
Rule 1: Violence is not permitted at any time unless to defend yourself. Hitting your sibling for taking an object or being annoying does not count a self defense. Neither does hitting one of your parents, even if they make you angry.
Rule 2: Everyone opinions will be respected. You do not have to agree with them but hurting someone because of it is not okay.
Rule 3: At no time will any illegal activity be permitted in this house. Not only will it get you into trouble with us but you will also receive a free ride in a police car! If you're really lucky, this ride will also come with handcuffs and an all expense paid stay in the local jail as well.
(Yes the rules actually say these exact words. Haru tried to make them somewhat funny in hopes that the children would pay more attention to them. XD)
