Story:
It was the beginning of autumn, the air was starting cool but not enough to stop the small bushfires springing up in the forests around the estate. A thin wisp of dying smoke still a stark contrast to the dawn colours across the sky. Opening the front door, the semi-feral wolf hybrid was sitting outside wagging his tail. "Staying near the house then?" I said softly to the canine, reaching forward to pet his soft head. His wagging tail increased at my touch and licked my wrist as a pulled away to look at the horizon. We had been lucky that no fires had sparked on the property but our next door neighbour hadn't been as lucky as well as the nature reserve. My boots crunched on the gravel path as I headed to the fence dividing our property from the reserve and climbed over the thick wooden fence, turning to watch Argent squeeze his body through. I enjoy walking through the nature reserve, but there was a strong smell of smouldering wood in the air. The newest fire was miles away, so it was safe for my walk but there was noise that I couldn't pinpoint. It sounded like an animal cry but nothing was coming to mind of what it was. Taking one look at my companion, I turned towards the sound and began to make my way towards it, stepping over dry grass.
It became quite loud and I could see a large body moving in the distance, Argent becoming tense beside me. There was a small clearing between the trees and near the edge of it was a large horse, struggling to get away from something. "Must have been spooked by the fire but I don't recognise the coat," I said softly to myself, staring at the gorgeous horse in front of me. Being in the middle of nowhere, it was common for neighbours to be a good 10-minute drive apart but we had a good relationship with ours and I still didn't recognise the horse. Telling Argent to stay so that he didn't stress the horse more than she already was, I walked slowly towards the mare, making sure that she could see me coming. There was a halter on her, that seemed quite new and there was a ridiculously long lead rope that had become stuck on a tree that had fallen in the fire. "Hey there, shh now. It is alright" I cooed, the mare turning her emerald eyes towards me, snorting with fear. It took some time but soon, I was close enough to pet her velvet muzzle and after she had calmed down, I reached down and untangled the lead rope. Ash covered her coat and when I got her home, I made sure to give her a good bath. She had a few burns but nothing too threating, and after calling around, I found out that she didn't have an owner. The halter was from the neighbour who had caught her but with the fires so close to his place, it had spooked her and she ran for the hills. As she grazed with my other horses, I came up a name for her as the sun set on the horizon. Edana meaning "little fire."
