(I hope you like it! :3)
A large, white horse with copper coloured patches nickered to a young girl striding across the paddock towards her.
The mare was named copper penny. She was an absolute sweetheart, calm and gentle. She was 6 years old and was a very wise gypsy.
The beautiful mare had befriended a young human girl named Sue. Sue was the mare’s constant companion, always cooing to her soothingly or feeding her sugar cubes she had bought herself. Sue was always there for Penny, and promised the mare she would always love her and be with her.
Sue skipped up joyfully to Penny. "Guess what Penny!" she said in her squeaky, high voice. Penny pricked her ears. "Daddy said we are going to the horse market!" Penny, not understanding anything the human had said just muzzled the young girl’s pockets. "Pa might buy another horse you can play with!" Penny was a very independent horse, ignoring the young frisky, long-legged horses in the paddock. She made it clear that she wanted to be alone and had absolutely nothing to do with them.
The only creature she loved to be with was the girl Sue.
Sue sat on the tall fence and itched Penny's withers. Penny was huge compared to the girl, so if the girl wanted to scratch her on her withers Sue would have to balance somewhere high. Giggling excitedly, Sue stood on the fence and with a lot of struggle, managed to position herself on Penny's back. "Giddy up! Giddy up Penny!" Penny snorted and willingly walked slowly around the paddock, stopping often to graze with Sue riding her. "Pa says we are going to the market tomorrow morning, and we will bring you to pull the carriage."
After a long romp around the lush paddock, Sue headed towards the small, rickety farm house. Sue's family was very poor and could not afford a better place to live. The property consisted of a small wood house, a rundown barn, a chicken coop, a horse paddock, and a single shelter where the family cow daisy resided. Their property was closely beside their neighbours.
It was dawn. A rooster crowed from the roof of the chicken house and the farm animals rose. Soon after, Sue and her mom, dad, and baby brother came out of the house and hitched up the wagon. Penny was fed and watered, and was hitched to the wooden wagon. Sue’s mother rushed around, collecting parcels of food for the trip and other important things the family would need for the day trip.
Soon enough, Sue’s pa clicked his tongue and off they went, on their way to the horse market.
The trip was long and hot. The baby would cry often and Sue would marvel at the birds and creatures they would come across. Pa, stern as ever never said a word. Ma would hush the baby and sing lullaby’s to sooth him. Penny just romped on, through busy towns and small settlements, large, cobblestone roads and narrow dirt ones.
They finally reached their destination, a large horse market. People were everywhere, swarming to every horse and food stand. Auctioneers voices ringed high above the others. “one hundred for this beautiful horse! Do I have two hundred?” Sue felt very small in the huge crowd of people. She felt rather at home when she glanced at Penny though. Penny stood quiet and alert, ready to lead on.
It was a few hours later. Penny was wiped down and given fresh hay and water. A stable hand rubbed her down and polished her hooves. Her combed her long mane and tail and gently rubbed her muzzle with a soft cloth. Penny was a little confused. She had never been fancied up like this before.
Meanwhile, Sue and her family were sitting in the stands and waiting for the next auction to start. Sue was chattering excitedly, eager to see all the horses for sale.
Soon enough, the action started and the bids went up. Soon enough, Pa bid for a flashy chestnut gelding. “Do I hear two hundred? Two hundred for the gelding?” No one bid any higher than Pa. The auctioneer closed the bidding. “Hooray daddy! We won the horse!” Sue was excited as ever.
It was half an hour later. Sue insisted on staying in the building. She wanted to see all the other beautiful horses. Pa stayed with her while mother went with the baby to a quiet spot.
“And here we have this beautiful horse, owned by Howard Stewart!” The auctioneer called out Pa’s name. “You are selling that chestnut gelding? “ Sue was utterly confused. “No sweetie, not that one.” Pa had a stern and almost regretful look in his eye. The horse owned my Pa walked it. Sue felt faint and gasped.
The horse in the bidding ring was Penny.
Sue immediately burst into tears, red faced. “Pa! Why! No! You can’t sell Penny.” “She is my only friend and I love her!” She shrieked. Penny, hearing her young master’s voice, pricked her ears in the girl direction and nickered. “Sue,” Pa went on calmly. “We need the money. Penny is a big horse and we can’t afford to feed her.” “No Pa! Don’t do this to me!”
Meanwhile, the bidding for Copper Penny went up. She was sold for a whooping five hundred dollars. Sue was utterly devastated.
Sue cried and sobbed all the way home, her eyes red and face flushed. Nothing her mother said could calm her. He father just sternly drove the wagon pulled by the new horse.
They arrived home. It was dark already, and Ma rushed the baby inside. Pa unhitched the wagon and brought the new gelding to the barn.
Sue was a wreck. She sat in the lush paddock and sobbed her heart out over Penny. It was not soon after that she heard a whinny. She jumped up. “Penny?” She knew the sound of Penny’s whinny. In fact, she knew the rhythm of her hoof beat’s, the sound of her nicker and the smell of her sleek coat. “Penny!”
She scampered towards the sound.
There, in her neighbours paddock was Penny. The beautiful copper and white horse nickered softly to her. Sue ran towards Penny excited and happy at last. She climbed under the fence and wrapped herself around the horses sweaty neck. “I will never leave you ever again, Penny,” The small girl promised.
It turns out; Penny was sold to their neighbour. Also, the kind man told Sue she could visit and ride her beloved Penny whenever she wanted. Sue was shrilled.
Sue and Penny were reunited at last.
