    tasks;;
      Task 1 - Welcoming your new dog home - Complete
        2/20/16
        The first day was tough. Extremely tough. Gabriel was already much older than any of our other dogs, being at around 10 years old. So if you add on the missing leg, it was not surprising that he was not readily accepted by the others. The younger dogs sniffed at him a few times, then abandoned him when he would not participate in their games. Axel and Nanook hung around him a bit longer, but they too got bored of sitting around and wandered off to their own antics. It also did not help that Gabriel was incredibly shy. The poor boy had never known the love of a single person, much less a whole staff plus a whole pack. He did not snap or even growl at the others. He simply sat alone with his head drooping and his tail still beside his body. It was truly a sad sight to see. Eventually I couldn't take the weight of the sadness that was before me. I walked over to the old boy. He did not move or flinch. He simply looked at his paws while I sat beside him, placing my hand to scratch at his back along his spine. Again, he did nothing. Eventually, though, I found his itch. Gabriel's ears instantly went forward as his back leg began to weakly thump on the ground. I couldn't help but smile at his sudden energy. After a while, I stopped. He looked at me with disappointed eyes, using his nose to lift my hand up over his head, a signal to keep scratching. I laughed softly and obliged. The happiness in his eyes was apparent as I began to scratch away at his back once more while he contentedly tapped the earth with his back foot and eventually let his tongue loll out of his mouth.
