"It's not working!" Pax shouted, frowning in frustration and pitching the toy across the room. His best friend Ammy quickly scrambled after it.
"I know what to do!" he crowed, and rushed off to the kitchen. Once he returned he plopped down in front of Pax and showed off the fork triumphantly. Using it carefully, he managed to pry apart the two stuck Lego plates. He beamed at the other boy. "Don't get mad Pax! Next time just ask for help!"
Ambrose was just handed his balloon when he heard a loud pop. Across the yard, a girl started crying. He looked from scene, up to his own balloon, the last of the bunch, shiny yellow and shaped like a star. He bit his lip, but only thought for a moment, before he was walking up to the girl and patting her head.
"Don't cry!" he said, and reached out to tie his balloon's ribbon around her wrist. "There you go, good as new. No need to be sad!"
"It was the biggest fish I've ever seen!" Ammy exclaimed, practically running on his little legs to keep up with Luci and Dei as they traipsed across the park on the way home. "It was almost as big as a shark! Oh man, did you know that sharks have to keep swimming to breathe! They even swim while they sleep! That's what the aquarium guy said. We saw the sharks, and even eels there! Electric ones that made cool sounds, a--"
Luci and Dei stopped and looked behind them as the sounds cut off. Ambrose hadn't seen the lamp post, and walked right into it, now on his butt in the grass, looking up at the offending post. Then he saw his friends looking and grinned.
"They made cool sounds, and we could see on the monitor! That's how electric eels look for prey!"
"Ammy stop it."
The boys were playing on their handheld games, and without realizing, Ambrose kept humming the theme music in a high pitch. Pax was trying to concentrate, and the sound was getting on his nerves.
"Am, knock it off." But Ambrose didn't seem to hear him. Pax bopped his friend on the forehead, not hard, but enough to catch him by surprise. "Quit it! Your humming is annoying!"
Quickly he realized his mistake as the other boy's eyes filled with tears, welling over as he started to sob.
"Paaaax! I'm really sorry!"
Pax rolled his eyes and sighed, but hurried to put an arm around Ambrose and ruffle his hair.
"Nevermind, it's okay."
