Baltic Winters Sled Dog Association: Rescue Round Up

This boy was confiscated by police due to his owner claiming he was a wolf. Through a DNA test and multiple BH experts viewing it has been determined he is just an agouti Baltic Husky. This boy is very dominant around other male dogs.

Task 1 - Welcoming your new dog home - Complete
Leash in hand and a smile plastered on my face, Xhat glanced down at the form that stood just beside her. Ears pricked and equally excited stood a Baltic husky, tail erect and eyes oddly bright, despite the obvious signs that he was malnourished. "Welcome to your new home, Johnathan!" The woman mused, her grin only widening upon the wolfish smile that Johnathan had given her, tail thumping behind him.

Before them was a ranch-style home, just about big enough for the woman and her team of dogs. Johnathan seemed to pick up on such, straining against his leash in an effort to bound towards the structure.

"Easy now, boy!" Xhat chastised, stumbling every so slightly from the sudden pull. Without a single hint of hesitation she followed her new family member across the lawn and up the steps, finally stopping at her door. Ever so carefully did she pull her key out, making sure not to drop it; but in the same length, she had to keep a good grip on Johnathan's leash.

Drawing in a breath and prepared herself, Xhat opened the door. Colchis, Lexus, and Kremlin were already waiting for her by the door so she shooed them away, mumbling to herself that they needed to make room for Johnthan to walk in. Begrudgingly did Lexus and Colchis obey, backing away from the door, whereas Kremlin lingered and made an effort to meet the new dog.

Xhat knew it wasn't the best idea to introduce them all at once, but now that Johnathan was nearly in the door, she couldn't just stop. "Everyone, meet Johnathan! He'll be staying with us for quite awhile...!"

Task 2 - Bonding - Complete
During the days that he had stayed with her and her dogs, Xhat found that Johnathan had a rather healthy appetite, and was gaining weight steadily. Though, she also noticed that he was unnecessarily dominant with Colchis and Lexus, of whom were male; Kremlin, he didn't seem to have a problem with.

"I'm going to have to bond with him myself first, though. If he doesn't trust me as his owner, he isn't going to trust the dogs around him... especially if they listen to me."

That proved to be a rather easy task.

Johnathan was an undoubtedly friendly dog; his main problems were with other dogs, but he seemed indifferent towards humans and if they threatened him or not. Whenever Xhat would walk through the door he would come running, tail moving a million miles an hour behind him.

Currently, he occupied the space of Xhat's lap. He wasn't quite a lap dog, but when it came down to it, he truly thought he was.

"Oof, Johnathan," Xhat exclaimed, leaning back against the couch as far as she could. "You're getting heavy, my boy! And you're much too big! And my lap of all places?" Nonetheless she grinned, reaching to pat the top of his head, only to be greeted with a multitude of doggy kisses. "Alright, alright. You can stay here a couple minutes longer. But after that..." She paused, a sly grin slipping onto her features. "It'll be time for food!"

The use of 'food' in her sentence didn't seem to be a good choice on Xhat's part, because as soon as that word left her lips, all the other dogs came flying around the corner.

Task 3 - Gaining Confidence - Complete
Now came the true test of Johnathan's training. And no, not the kind of training that involved pulling a sled behind him. Xhat could only hope for the best, since it was high time to take the final step in Johnathan's temperament training.

Loosely she had hooked her fingers around the agouti's collar, raising her fingers to her lips in the meanwhile. Slowly she let out a whistle, calling out the names of one of her beloved huskies. "Colchis, here!" Colchis came as commanded, ears erect and head tilted to the side ever so slightly. Xhat commanded him to sit just a few feet away from them, and so he did, flopping down and staring at the human-dog duo with knowing eyes.

"Johnathan, remember what I've said to you. No rough, okay? Be nice." Nervousness flashed by her momentarily, but Xhat dismissed it. She couldn't be nervous at a time like this. Inch by inch she let her fingers slide from Johnathan's collar, finally allowing him free range to go to wherever he liked.

Of course, the first thing he did was approach Colchis, Xhat could see his hackles rise slightly, but other than that, she saw no other signs of aggression. The next thing she knew, the two canines were standing nose to nose. Johnathan's muzzle twitched to display his teeth, but as soon as Colchis returned, the gesture, he seemed to back off. Now in good nature, the two proceeded to sniff each other down, which caused Xhat to burst out laughing.

"Good boys!" she praised them, trotting over to her beloved pets, smile now present on her face.

Task 4 - Training - Complete
Snow tumbled down from the sky, coating everything in a thing layer of white. Amid the cold stood a human, running alongside what looked to be a sled. "Mush, Johnathan!" The woman, Xhat, called out, glancing to the side to see if her husky was doing alright.

She could tell that he had not been sled trained before he had arrived, so everything had to be worked on; right down to the very basics. Thankfully she had two other dogs, Kremlin and Colchis, who were happy to set a good example of what kind of sled dog that Johnathan shoulder be.

But even in his early days of training, Xhat had found that Johnathan had excellent instincts. With what little training he had, he had been able to navigate courses that other dogs may not have been able to complete at such an premature stage. Immediately, she knew that he would be the Lead dog of her team.

"Gee!" It only took Johnathan a few seconds for Johnathan to realize the command that Xhat had called out, and in turn, he obeyed, swaying to the side he was supposed to. "Good boy!" His owner cried out, raising her fist to punch the air in the air. "Okay, Johnathan, that's enough for tonight! Woah!"

The agouti husky now slowed to a stop, tongue hanging out of the side of his mouth and tail thumping behind him. Humming in a happy manner, Xhat moved to remove his harness, fingers moving deftly across the buckles. "You've earned yourself some treats. C'mon, let's go inside."
