Postby Eremite » Thu Feb 11, 2016 5:20 am

Baltic Winters Sled Dog Association: Rescue Round Up

This boy was found roaming a property with multiple other Baltics. Due to being born into a pack and being raised in a wild setting this boy has lots of strong feral tendencies however he is still young and can overcome them with time.

I am claiming my Baltic Husky!
full name;; Give Me One More Chance
call name;; 'Prince Charming'
tasks;;
Task 1 - Welcoming your new dog home - Complete
The drive home was hard, with the new Baltic Husky pacing back and forth on the seats in the back. Every time the car jerked, Prince lost his balance and tripped over his own paws. When we finally arrived, I carefully slipped a loose leash over his neck and led him into the house. I slipped the leash off of his neck and sat down as I watched Prince walk around the room, exploring every nook and cranny of the house. I decided to keep my distance, and let the husky explore while I switched on the TV and watched some shows. After about half an hour later, I turned my head to see Prince trudging back in the room, his head high and tail stiff behind him. Confused, I decided to scan the house. Maybe he had gotten into something. After looking around, I realized that he had marked his territory in every single room, the stench drifting through the air. With a shocked and angry expression, I marched back into the living room, about to scold the brute, until finding him peacefully resting on the couch. Shaking my head, I spent the next hour trying to get the smell out of each room, and decided to keep an eye on him from now on, until he stops trying to mark his territory and stink up the house. That afternoon, we spent the day lying on the couch. I still kept my distance from him, since he still seemed a little feral and territorial, but after a while he seemed to calm down and dazed the rest of the day. And that night, Prince gave me a sad look, with his tired eyes looking up at me. And while he did so, I was lost in thought, and started to stroke his head and back. And when I finally came back into reality, I realized that the feral brute had let me touch and pet him, with no objections.

    Task 2 - Bonding - Complete
The first week with Prince was a bit crazy. It was hard to get to know his personality, and what he liked or disliked. It always seemed that every day, I learned something new about him. I spent some serious bonding time with him, slowly petting him more, and staying close to him, making him feel safe. I did everything I could to make him comfortable. Anything that would make him happy, made me happy. I practically spoiled him. Today was the day that I finally knew he was tamed, and out of his feral state he was in when I first got him. I sat next to him as he ate, getting him used to me being there. As soon as he was done eating, he turned and sat down in front of me, yawing silently. I patted his head, softly, and watched as he lay down and rested his head on my lap. It was almost as if he was saying “ok, I trust you now.” I slowly rose up and sat down on the couch. The husky followed me, and jumped up on the couch with me. I smiled, and was happy to find that now I had a regular dog sitting next to me, and I stroked his back and head with comfort. I now did not have to worry about the wild raised brute marking his territory in any of my rooms in the house, or biting me for self defense. This was the first time in a long time that I felt comfortable with Prince.

    Task 3 - Gaining Confidence - Complete
Now that I had a nice and calm Prince strolling around my house, I didn’t have to worry about anything much at all, which is what I thought at first. One peaceful and quiet morning, I decided to take Prince out on a long walk, just to get him out of the house and to stretch his legs. Maybe a nice run at the park will do him good too. But, as I leashed him up and stepped outside, it finally hit me. This dog, which is used to me, isn’t used to other people, or other dogs. He probably fought other dogs as a stray, and barked at any humans passing by. I guess now was a good time to help him get used to people.
For the next week, I spent time walking Prince around the neighborhood. If anyone walked by, and he tried to make a move, I would pull him back and stand him still until they passed. That got him a treat if he did well. I also did the same with other dogs, which got him a treat as well. Everything seemed to be going fine. It was until something happened out of the blue. I was walking Prince on the sidewalk, watching him to make sure he wasn’t planning anything. I thought everything was going to be fine, and that he finally broke out of his protective state. So, to reward him, I put some slack on his leash, and he instantly leaped forward. He almost dragged me out into the road, because of a dog on the other side. I grabbed a hold of his collar and pulled him back, standing with him behind a sign. I quickly scolded him, lecturing him about things I knew he couldn’t even understand. Later, I realized that the dog he had spotted on the other side of the road was another Baltic husky, and that may have been his friend when he was a stray.
For the next couple of days, I did the same things over and over again, and every time we spotted another dog or husky, I would make sure to keep an eye on Prince. After all of our routine, I finally thought that he had completely grown comfortable around other humans and dogs. I even invited my friend and he dog to come over, and Prince seemed to be perfectly fine! It was nice to see him out of that state, and I was relieved.

    Task 4 - Training - Complete
My now healthy and loving companion, Prince, lay beside me with his tongue lolling out as he panted. We had just walked in from our routine walk around the area, and Prince had since become more loving and open to others and me. I decided that it was time to start training him. Even though I don’t have a team, I still thought that he needed to be trained well. He is just going to be my companion, but he needs to just learn some of the basics. Not anything complicated, of course.
So, the next day, instead of walking, I decided to teach Prince a simple command: sit. I got him down on the ground and stood in front of him. Prince looked as if he had a large smile on his face, as he looked up at me. He knew I had treats in my pockets. I reached back and pushed down him rump, so he was sitting. I used a clicker, and fed him a treat. Prince stood, and looked at me with his head tilted. I laughed quietly, as I continued to teach him this command for a little longer.
I spent the next couple of months teaching Prince the simple commands, and he seemed to grab onto them quickly. He was a great learner, and very smart. I always did my research, making sure I was teaching him right, and soon enough, Prince turned into a pro. Well, maybe not a pro, cause he still needed some practice, but he was doing really well. After all this training, my handsome Prince now knows sit and heal, which I tend to use a lot.

What color would you like his harness?
Blame is a coward but self-righteous
A funny little creature hiding out in me
Hate is power with a price tag
A funny little creature screaming out in me
Listen to me
Fear is a liar but he's been right before
If you fight your shadow, you'll get lost in a war
Ambitions a champ, but he's also greedy
Drunk or sober he always wants more
I always want more
I always want more
Lust is beauty in a body bag
A funny little thing that's screaming "Just use me!"
