Kleeare #24 ✧ Winter Rescue

Postby canis, » Wed Dec 16, 2015 1:06 pm

We recently got an urgent call from the local authorities. It seems that they were called in after a recent sighting of a very skinny, odd-looking horse left out in the freezing cold. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered a huge Kleeare stable to be abandoned. The Kleeare were simply left, some in the pasture, some trapped in their stalls. And all extremely emaciated. We responded quickly, arriving at the stable and assessing the condition of each Kleeare. The sight shocked us, but we did not fret. We brought each one of the Kleeare back to our place, where they were evaluated by our veterinarian. Some cases were more extreme than others, but all of them had the chance to be saved. That's where you step in...

This Kleeare seems to have a persistent cold. It will need some meds to get it back to full health.

First Meeting

Postby Queen Vivane » Fri Dec 18, 2015 2:15 am

I'd just finished cleaning one of the many saddles that sat in the tack room when the noise of a truck pulling up caught my attention.

"Huh, wonder what that could be" I wondered, straightening and heading out toward the yard. A sleek silver horse box stood in the middle of the yard, the door lowered. Standing just inside was an odd looking equine, very emaciated with a runny nose. I frowned, this must have been the rescue I'd gotten a call about.

I slowly made my way up the ramp, the pale yellow eyes of the equine watching me were dull and lifeless. There was just no fight in those eyes. I gently ran a hand over her neck and she didn't even move, just continued to stare off into the distance.

"I will fix this, I will save you from this horror" I whispered to the silent mare. Her only reaction was the slightest twitch of one ear. After untying the knot I softly clucked my tongue and gave the leadrope a gentle tug, "come on girly I need to get you out of here" I breathed. As if working on instinct alone, the mare took a slow step forward and then another until she was following me down the ramp at an achingly slow pace. That was at least better than nothing at all.

Once the both of us were safely off the ramp, I pushed it back up and slid the holding mechanism back into place before backing away and signalling the driver. The trailer pulled away and swiftly moved out of sight along the road that worked its way up to the yard from the main road.

I needed to find my charge a stable that was both clean and warm, it also had to be ready for the poor thing who stared at the floor as she moved.

Welcome Home

The two of us moved steadily toward the large barns that loomed up out of the gathering gloom. She would have to stay in the isolation stall until I could rid her of what the information sheet I'd been provided with told me was a persistent cold. I didn't want any of the other inhabitants getting a cold.

I pulled open the door letting the familiar horse and hay smell filter out, the two of us entered and I shut the door again. Trying not to let too much cool air into the nice warm barn. Together we moved down the isle, getting greetings off of the various equines that inhabited the stalls. A dun Narakari mare with ruby horns and eyes flattened her ears then attempted to bite both myself and the sickly Kleeare with me.

"Give over" I told her sharply. The telling off didn't stop her from trying again, oddly enough that seemed to give the liver dun with me the tiniest spark as the golden eyed mare flattened her ears in response. "Well well well, it seems you do have it in you" I said softly and continued walking toward the back of the barn.

I pushed open the door to the isolation stall. It was warm and cozy, a full bed of straw already laid down and a bucket full of fresh water in the bottom corner. It was nice and roomy, plenty of space for its inhabitant to lie flat out without getting stuck via a wall.

Gently grasping the halter I gently undid the strap and slid it off of her head. The sickly Kleeare walked slowly over to the middle of the stall and flopped into the straw, sighing deeply as she settled into her temporary stall. I watched her for a few moments and then exited the stall, shutting the door behind me and bolting it shut.

A Spoonful of Sugar

Postby Queen Vivane » Tue Jan 26, 2016 11:16 am

Seance had been with me for a week now. I'd been adding various small amounts of bits of food that would help her gain weight and also improve her general well-being. Adding things had been slow going, all animals needed special care with their diets or they could become ill. She didn't need the chance of getting anything more than the cold she already had. The yards resident horse expert had declared the mare to be fit enough for short walks outside in order to keep her active.

He'd also instructed me how to administer the antibiotics if Seance would not willingly take them. Two different ways to give it to her, a liquidized version and a more solid version both were acceptable to mix in with her food.

The liver dun mare's condition had improved from when she first arrived. She was in no way up to complete health but had at least gotten a fair way toward the next stage of body condition. I reckoned she was at about a two and a half rather than the borderline high 1 she had been on arrival at the yard.

I hummed softly as I slowly mixed her food, dropping in the recommended amount of pills going via the instructions on the bottle. Giving the food one last stir, I grasped the bucket and smoothly lifted it before heading off to take Seance her dinner. My footsteps echoed upon the stone floor as I walked toward the isolation stall where Seance was currently located. The echos of my passage followed me to the isolation stall.

The bolt on the dark wooden door drew back with ease, no ear bleeding squeak assaulting my hearing as the metal moved back. A shaft on sunlight shone directly across Seance whose ears flicked as I stepped into the stall.

"Hey there pretty girl, I brought you your dinner" I always spoke gently to her keeping my tone light and gentle. The liver dun had been reacting more and more as we spent time together. Setting the bucket down I moved away to let the beautiful mare eat her food.

Once she finished, I collected the bucket and frowned at the uneaten medication. Sighing I scooped them up and turned to the Liver Dun, she had the grace to actually look a little sheepish when I raised an eyebrow at her. As if a little light bulb had switched on above my head, I grinned and pulled a small tin of syrup out of my pocket. Carefully lifting off the lid, I dipped a finger into the golden liquid and then smeared a little over each pill. I licked my finger clean and then offered the syrupy pills to Seance.

Her nostrils flared delicately as she snuffled cautiously at my hand and after a few tender movements she quickly snatched the pills from my hand and retreated to the back of the stall before crunching them up.

Making Friends

Postby Queen Vivane » Thu Jan 28, 2016 11:34 pm

Image Byzantine

Blue eyes glowed softly in the darkness. I knew exactly who those eyes belonged to, so I merely carried on sweeping the isle clean of stray bits of hay and mud dust from the coming's and goings of various equines. The creature to whom the eyes belonged had come to enjoy the barn and spent most of her time there, being a sort of guardian to the barns various residents both big and small.

"The thin one tells me that you are good to her" the voice was calm with a slight undertone of curiosity. I was puzzled for a moment before catching on, my lips curving up slightly in what was almost a smile.

"I take it she caught your interest then?" I asked wryly

"Rescues intrigue me that much I cannot deny" Byzantine replied as she jumped from her place upon the feed room roof and strolled toward me I chuckled and scooped up the dustpan in order to empty the contents into the nearby wheelbarrow which I promptly wheeled to the exit of the barn and left just in front of the doors. The horses were all in for the night and all that was left was to check up on Seance. I returned to the Silver grey Ahzenai who without speaking simply turned and led the way to the isolation stall, she jumped her fore paws landing upon the smooth wooden top of the stable door. Seance's ears flicked forward and a quiet almost silent greeting left her.

"Tis nice to see you are still doing well Seance" Byzantine told the liver dun mare with a dip of her horned head.

"Well well well, it seems you have found a friend in this lost soul" I told the silvery female who merely nodded in response

Exercise Routine

Postby Queen Vivane » Sun Jan 31, 2016 11:46 am

I lead Seance into the schooling ring and unclipped the lead rope from her halter. She'd been getting antsy recently and the vet had given her the okay for light exercise. I had a few things in mind for what the two of us could do of course. I looped the leadrope around the top bar of the gate before beginning to walk around the around the edge of the ring, keeping my pace slow and steady. Every so often I would cast my gaze toward Seance, she seemed confused and had taken to watching me with eyes the color of molten gold.

It took a long while for the liver dun mare to start following me but when she did, I steadily started speeding up until I was running around the ring, The Kleeare mare behind me bursting into a canter so as not to fall behind.

"Now your getting it" I laughed and swiftly darted across to the other side of the ring. "Catch me if you can pretty lady" I called out joyfully and bounded away across the sandy floor. She caught on quickly and darted after me, long legs eating up the ground as she moved so gracefully.

Seance was decreasing the distance between us far too quickly, keeping up with whatever twists and turns I pulled off. The Kleeare cut me off so swiftly, I didn't have time to stop and crashed full force into her side. Knocking the wind out of me and sending me to the floor where I lay for a few moments gasping for breath that was evading me.

Leaning down she gently snuffled at my face, gentle skin running over my cheeks and forehead.

"I'm alright, lass. No need to worry about me" I whispered and reached up to gently stroke her face.

Final Evaluation

Postby Queen Vivane » Sun Jan 31, 2016 10:41 pm

It was a bright and beautiful morning when The Kleeare Association member arrived. I had just finished washing Calamity, when the black appaloosa Narakari stallion neighed a greeting to someone I couldn't see. Peering over his back I spied a young woman with long ginger hair tied in a messy plait approaching.

"Good morning" I called out, waving to her as I ducked underneath the leadrope that tied Calamity to the side of the barn. I offered a smile as I extended a hand to the other woman. "Isabela Akantius, tis a pleasure to meet you" I offered as she took my hand in a firm grip and shook it.

"Greetings, you may call me Kerrigan" she replied as she cast her gaze about the yard. "I am from The Kleeare Association and have come in order to do the final check up on the mare known as Seance" Kerrigan said smoothly.

"I shall fetch her from her stall then, you may come along if you so wish" my voice not unkind as I turned and headed toward the barn. Together the two of us entered the barn and were greeted by various equines of varying species as they noticed our entry into the barn. Of course dear Desert Fury attempted to bite Kerrigan as she always did with everyone and anything that passed by her stall. I was the exception most days and today seemed no different as she nickered at me and lipped at my fingers when I offered my hand for her to sniff. "I do apologize, Fury dislikes almost everyone and everything" I said and gently pushed the dun mare back o the other woman could get by.

"Tis quite alright, I am used to grumpy mares" Kerrigan chuckled as she walked by. I followed on behind her until we reached Seance. The Liver Dun mare poked her head over the door and intensely investigated the fiery haired woman before lipping at the end of the long plait. "She certainly seems in good spirits, would you bring her outside so I can examine her properly?" Kerrigan told me.

I nodded in reply and swiftly buckled on the Kleeare's halter and leadrope before following Kerrigan outside. Seance and I stood still while Kerrigan examined the Kleeare from ear to hoof, I trotted her up and down allowing Kerrigan to see how the Kleeare was moving.

"You have done a fine job with her, I am pleased to officially say that Seance will be remaining here under your dedicated care. We will have her papers sent to you as soon as possible" the other woman said with a bright smile.
