Kleeare #14 Winter Rescue

Postby paradise, » Sun Dec 13, 2015 7:56 am

We recently got an urgent call from the local authorities. It seems that they were called in after a recent sighting of a very skinny, odd-looking horse left out in the freezing cold. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered a huge Kleeare stable to be abandoned. The Kleeare were simply left, some in the pasture, some trapped in their stalls. And all extremely emaciated. We responded quickly, arriving at the stable and assessing the condition of each Kleeare. The sight shocked us, but we did not fret. We brought each one of the Kleeare back to our place, where they were evaluated by our veterinarian. Some cases were more extreme than others, but all of them had the chance to be saved. That's where you step in...

This kleeare seems to be one of the calmer ones, they are just a bit shy.

The morning sun rose slowly that day, adrift with pale light and soft tones. While it seemed everything was still asleep and calm, one being stirred rightfully. His rough hands gripped an old rake as he swept about a stone stable, removing the bouts of dirt and cobwebs in order to line each stall carefully with straw. The dust swirled about in gusts as the stable master worked, coating his plain clothes and paled skin in a layer of muck. He wiped sweat from his forehead carelessly, streaking his face with soapy water as he scrubbed at the stall doors. By noon the barn was nearly complete, each stone sparkling in the bright sunlight. Now all that was left was its inhabitants - the Kleeares. As he stood and walked out toward the dirt path separating the small farm house and the barn he paused, holding his breath as the much anticipated sound reached his ears. A soft whinny in the distance, followed by the purr of a truck engine. The handler's heart was practically beating out of his chest as a rusted black truck pulled into the driveway, a large trailer hitched to the back. He exchanged pleasantries with the driver before parking the trailer next to the barn and waving him on his way. A quick glance into the holding cell nearly broke the boys heart, as a severely emaciated and sickly looking steed looked up at him, complete terror in his bright blue eyes. With a heavy sigh the stable hand opened the trailer doors, speaking softly to his new companion. "Shh...its alright boy, I got you..." He whispered as he reached a tentative hand out towards the animal. Of course the stallion turned his head and shivered, backing away as far as he possibly could. "I know youre scared boy, dont worry, I wont hurt you. My name's Slim, by the way. I heard your name is Jass, isnt that right?" With a soft whinny Jass shook his head, his scraggly mane flopping over his neck. He paced forward, nervous, muscles tight. Slim grinned and wrapped his fingers over the stallion's muzzle, slipping a brand new blue halter over his head. With gentle praise and baby steps Slim managed to get the shy horse out into the warm day, and began to lead him to his new forever home.

At first Jass seemed fairly standoffish towards the barn, its large size and shimmering stone looming overhead. But something, most likely the delicious scents of fresh hay and unique homemade treats, called him in. Slim led him through, passing each empty spot until they reached the very back. This stall was built specifically for special cases, such as sickly horses or mothers with foals. Its large floor was layered with thick mats and bedded up with fresh aspen chips. A layer of shredded and thinly chopped straw coated it for a soft and comfortable spot for sore hooves. Slim ran his hand along the wooden beams, feeling the polished feels of each hole and chip. The gate itself was an intricately patterned wooden and metal maze, sturdy yet welcoming. Though Jass cared little for the beauty and warmness of his new home, as all he could think about was the large bins overflowing with specialty feed. A think layer of molasses coated every bin as a special treat, causing the stallion to drool and pace dramatically. Slim laughed warmly as he opened the gate and invited the stallion in, being sure to watch his reactions closely. He headed straight for the food, slurping it down in a mere matter of seconds. With a full belly and empty bucket, Jass stretched out his limbs lazily before dosing off in the back corner of the stall. Slim stood for a while, simply watching the Kleeare breath so gently and full of peace. As the day grew to a close however, there was still more work to be done. The stable master worked carefully through the evening, continuing to clean and prepare the other stalls. He hung silky white fabric from the tops of the stalls, dressing the building in beauty and adorning it with small lights. When night arrived Slim was already exhausted, and fell into a deep sleep upon a pile of hay at the entrance of the barn.

In the early morning, before the sun had even risen above the horizon, Slim awoke to the sound of a pitiful crying. In a flash he jumped up and approached Jass's stall, anxiety rippling through his body. The frail stallion was slumped over his empty feed bucket, baying into it. With a chuckle Slim shook his head and began fixing up the morning feed, as well as a large list of medications. Thankfully most of it was able to be added to the feed, however three of them were going to be a bit more difficult. First, Jass was in need of some antibiotics. Various old scars and sores laced his body from the long standing neglect, and infection was threatening to take over the open wounds. Needle in hand Slim slipped into the stall, tossing Jass's food under his nose as to distract him. He stood, gently rubbing his fingers over the horses powerful neck. A quick pinch was all it took, and surprisingly Jass didnt even care to notice. Smiling Slim slipped out to grab the second medication, a simple all around vitamin filler as well as a dewormer. He stuck Jass with two more large needles quick as could be, no problem. The final medication though would not be as effortless. A nasty smelling goop, called Fratter Juice, was the one and only cure all for weight gain in equines. Its was a sort of home made concoction by one of Slim's close friends, yet it had been filling the shelves of local supply stores for years. Despite the awful taste it truly benefited Jass to take it as it would help the frail boy gain weight and strength much faster than just the staple vitamin feed. As the stallion perked his nose up from the empty bucket, whinnying for more, Slim approached the stall gate. "Okay Im sorry boy, but this is for your own good. Just try to keep it down.." he whispered as he gagged on the stench. A large feeder syringe was filled to the brim, swirling with red and blue slime. Slim gently wrapped his hand around Jass's muzzle, plucking his lips up and shoving the syringe in his mouth quickly. He pressed the trigger and the goop oozed into the stallions mouth, his eyes watering from the taste. He stomped and gagged and spat what he could back at his trainer, staining the previously spotless barn in purplish grime. With a sigh Slim sat in front of the stall, looking about his barn with disdain. "As long as your healthy bud.." he grumbled.

Within a few days Jass had seemed to calm down significantly. He was even becoming quite fond of his trainer, and enjoyed the relaxing days on the farm. At that point, Slim knew it was time to really get Jass into the swing of things, and bring in his pasture pal Melody. The stunning broad mare had been sold at a nearby auction under Slim's name, and he was anxiously awaiting her arrival. Finally, just before the evening sun started to set, a shiny black truck rolled up the driveway. Slim set his tools down and rushed out to greet the driver, who replied halfheartedly and walked around to unlatch the trailer door. The stunning medicine hat mare stepped out tentatively, pawing at the cobblestone walkway that led to the barn. Slim held out a flat palm and let the mare smell him gently, then coaxed her closer to rub her neck and attach a lead rope to her baby pale green halter. She nuzzled his shoulder and followed behind him as he led her to the pasture, cocking her head to the side as she spotted Jass at the fence line. The stallion backed away cautiously, bowing his head and turning away from her as a sign of submission. Slim chuckled and unlatched the gate, following Melody through as she confidently pranced over to the awkward boy. He huffed and kept his eyes anxiously on the ground, pacing his hooves in the dirt. With a loud girlish whinny Melody snatched out and nipped his ear, turning on a dime to buck out and race across the field. She turned her head mid run and then slowed, seemingly disappointed that the stallion was still frozen in place. She snorted, stomping her hoof on the ground. With a heavy sigh she pranced back over to him and stood by his side, eyeing him warily. She swayed there, relaxing in the evening sun for over an hour. Eventually she felt Jass's muscles relax as he calmed. She whinnied softly, nipping his again with a motherly gentleness. This time he whinnied back pressing his shoulder to her side to feel the mares soft pelt on his. She turned to him and began grooming his thin and patchy fur, as he worked on her tangled mane. They bonded quickly, creating a strong sense of confidence in the otherwise timid male, and after just a few days, they were inseparable.

The sound of stammering hooves and restless whinnies echoed through the barnyard for hours on end, annoying everything with ears that lived there. Jass had only just gained enough weight and muscle to be able to move about freely, yet the image of the frail colt was still burned into Slim's mind. The trainer stood in front of the overwhelmingly tall stallion, staring into those stunning teal eyes with boundless energy stirring behind them. With another huff Jass kicked at the door with his front hoof, snorting up a glob of snot onto Slim's face. The horse whinnied and chuckled, seemingly amused by his handlers angry growl. Slim looked down, sighing, before breaking down and grabbing the lead rope from beside the stall gate. He pulled it taunt and reached over, quickly clipping it onto Jass' hatler. Jass sneered and pawed at the ground anxiously, ready to soar the minute the gate opened. With a stern yank Slim brought his head down and opened the gate, ensuring the horse stayed put until he was told otherwise. His gentle eyes looked up pitifully toward the boy's face, as if to ask 'Why not?'. With a shake of his head and a click of his heels Slim walked out, keeping Jass the proper distance behind him as he led him around the outer field. They started at a walk, enjoying the sounds of nature around them, then started in at a soft trot. None too surprisingly Jass began panting and heaving quite sooner than a kleeare normally would, proving further that he was horribly out of shape still. Slim praised him, unclipping the lead and leaving the stallion to roam in his own time. His progress was immense, but still not quite enough. Slim just had to hope and beg that he had come far enough to stay..

When the day finally came for the agency to return for the final check-up, Slim was beyond nervous. He had worked closely with Jass for the past few months, catering to his every whim and teaching him what it meant to just simply exist as a kleeare. It hadnt been easy, and there were a few times in which Slim wished he had done things differantly, but truely it was a learning experience for the both of them. As the oh so familiar black truck rolled up the driveway Slim waltzed out, trying his best to seem confident and eager, despite how small he really felt inside. The agent got out and beemed at him, their lax clothing and dusty appearance calming the stablehand's nerves almost immediately. She was of average height, long red hair tied up loosely in a pony tail. She wiped her hands on her overalls messily before gripping Slim's in a tight handshake. He grinned and felt a flutter in his stomach as he introduced himself, and began leading the agent around the property for a quick tour. Of course he steered her quickly to the reasons she was really here - Jass. Slim walked up to the outer pasture and called out for the little herd of two, watching as Melody booked it toward him, Jass following behind he with slightly less eagerness. As the stallion approached the gate he paused, starring at the stranger bitterly. He stomped and stared at his handler expectantly, noting the angry expression it earned him. With a sigh and a roll of his eyes, Jass walked forward and stuck his head over the gate, welcoming the odd woman to pet him. She did so softly yet firmly, just the way Jass liked it, and he quickly decided he liked her company. Slim and the woman, who had learned was called 'Beth', slipped into the pasture to grab ahold of the stallion. She checked over the horses body, running her fingers over the old scars and patchy fur. He had healed well, but would likly always hold some tell tale sign of his past. With a soft smile Beth offered treats and praise to the stallion, before shaking Slim's hand once more. With that the stable master held his head high, his heart soaring as he coddled the beautiful horse close to him. A clean bill of health was all it really took, and now Jass was forever his.
