Kleeare #4 Winter Rescue

Postby y i n » Wed Dec 09, 2015 12:11 pm

We recently got an urgent call from the local authorities. It seems that they were called in after a recent sighting of a very skinny, odd-looking horse left out in the freezing cold. Upon arriving at the scene, they discovered a huge Kleeare stable to be abandoned. The Kleeare were simply left, some in the pasture, some trapped in their stalls. And all extremely emaciated. We responded quickly, arriving at the stable and assessing the condition of each Kleeare. The sight shocked us, but we did not fret. We brought each one of the Kleeare back to our place, where they were evaluated by our veterinarian. Some cases were more extreme than others, but all of them had the chance to be saved. That's where you step in...

This kleeare is very aggressive towards other kleeares and sometimes towards humans, he was saved from a kleeare fighting group that was soon shut down after recovering multiple kleeares. Take your time with this guy, it'll take some time for him to calm down.

As the trailer pulled in, I opened up the coral and I stood in the driveway waiting. The truck and trailer came to a halt and the driver, a member of the Kleeare Association, stepped out. She told me that my rescue kleeare is very aggressive to other kleeares and sometimes toward humans. She told me that he was recovered from a kleeare fighting group, and that is why he's aggressive. After telling me about him, she dropped the trailer door down to reveal a golden buckskin roan blanket appaloosa kleeare. He seemed nervous, and his ears were flat against his head. Because of his aggressive nature, I let his cool down before going near him as he darted out of the trailer, despite being on a leadline. He ran around the corral for a few minutes before coming to a stop. I stepped inside of the corral and held my hands out to show the stallion that I had nothing in them. He gave me a slight look of skepticism before approaching with caution. He kept his ears pinned and his tail clamped. He grew braver and sniffed my hand. I grabbed his lead and stroked his face with great caution. He was nervous, but still curious, sniffing my hands and face as if he'd never seen a human before. My brother, a stablehand of mine, walked out of the stable to see Aureliusz. As soon as Aureliusz saw my brother, he flipped out, and tried with all his strength to get to John. Aureliusz reared up tall, struck out, bit at the air, and pawed at the ground, as if fighting.

"Woah there Aureliusz. It's okay, John's not gonna hurt you. John, go back in the stable until I call for you. The rescue is an ex-fighter, and I'm pretty sure his old handler was a man." I said, looking from the golden stallion to my brother whom was now jogging back to the stable.

Aureliusz panted heavily and paced back and forth, now stirred up from seeing John. I did my best to calm him down, but he was too jumpy. I let him run around the corral before catching him again. I waved to the driver as she pulled away.

"Aureliusz, we have some work to do."

I opened the corral gate and led Aureliusz out of the pen, being very careful not to pull on him or spook him. I led him to a big black wooden stable, where I put all the rescues I work with. I stopped walking when I reached a big, empty stall on the left far corner. I opened the wooden door with a metal lock and metal barring around the top. Aureliusz sniffed at the bedding and looked around at the padded walls. He grew curious and walked in slowly, looking out the open window in the back of the stall, and sniffed around. He looked around the stall and across the way at another rescue horse. The horse, a strawberry roan pinto mare, looked outside her window and gazed at the horses grazing not far from the barn. Aureliusz paced around a little, inspecting the automatic waterer and food bucket. I let him off of his halter and stepped out of the stall, closing the door and locking it behind me. He pawed at the bedding and sniffed the rubber matting underneath. The rescue in the next stall, a little Valkyrie deer named Courageous, looked up at Aureliusz curiously. Aureliusz looked at the fawn for a second before messing the lock on the door. He was very curious and excited about his new temporary stall. After about an hour, I led Aureliusz out of the fancy wooden stall and into a small pasture behind it. I opened the back door to the stall, which led into the pasture, and let Aureliusz graze. The little personal pasture had high, black wooden railing and a red gate out into the walkway leading to a training arena. Aureliusz inspected the pasture and sniff at the grass. He laid down in the grass and munched a little while resting. I took his halter off carefully and again, let him be. Outside his stall was a white Dry-erase board, and I had his information written on it. I went home and got everything ready for the next day.

Today is a bit of an eventful thing, as today, Aureliusz was seeing a vet. I had him haltered and ready when the vet pulled in. She gathers her equipment and approaches.
"So this is the new rescue baby! How beautiful! But very malnourished and possibly a bit wheezy. Let's get that fixed up." the vet said. She got her stethoscope and listened to his heart and lungs, writing down notes as she moved. She checked his feet and legs, then his eyes and nose. She finished checking Aureliusz out and wrote down the medication he needed in a prescription book. I picked the medication up later that day and started to think of ways to get Aureliusz to take his medication. I decided to get a powder version and put it in his feed. When I got home, I started to prepare some warm oats. I started with bute, a horse pain reliever common used on show and working horses. I sprinkled a cup of bute into the feed and mixed it in well. I then added medication for equine allergies and mixed it in again. The third medication was to add some weight, and the last for equine influenza. I mixed them all in well so they were hidden within the feed. I thought it would taste bitter with plain medication and oats, so I added a few apple slices and cinnamon & sugar in. I brought the bucket of warm oats to his stall and hooked it the wall, petting his face gently before letting him eat. He seemed to enjoy it, and didn't spot the medication in his oats. I smile and remember that he also needed hoof polish for some cracks, and he didn't like his legs touched. I went to get the hoof polish and set it on the ground next to Aureliusz. I rubbed on his should and rubbed all down his leg. I quickly polished his hooves and checked to see if he ate all of his oats. He had eaten it all, and I knew exactly how to give his meds again.

Aureliusz waited at the gate as I came with his halter to catch him. The Kleeare Association would be here at any moment. Aureliusz walked along as I led him to the main arena. I heard a truck pull in and waved to the representative as they stepped out. I asked Aureliusz to stand square. He listened and stood still and quiet. He was still a little on the thinner side, but not to the point where it was unhealthy anymore, and his ribs were the only bones visible. Aureliusz still didn't have a ton of muscle tone, but he was getting stronger. His teeth were into shape, his feet were no longer cracked and he was no longer sick. Aureliusz's temperament was still a bit on the jumpy side, but he was much less spooky and nervous. When he first arrived, Aureliusz was a bony, sick, and nervous wreck. He was violent toward men and other kleeares and scared of certain noises, such as tractors, creaky boards, tarps, thunder, and other loud and slightly annoying noises. After working with him for a while, the golden stallion is now more kind and patient, with a bit more of a friendly attitude. He's gained some weight and isn't sick anymore. He's started to learn that not all humans are there to hurt him. He's gotten more used to loud noises and doesn't jump as much when exposed to said noises. I've started to break him under saddle, with his discipline undecided. He's befriended a little cat named Diamond, which he spends a lot of time with. He's started to get more active and playful. He likes to mess with an exercise ball with a soft covering on it so he can throw it around. I like to play with him, too. He could still use a bit more work, but I'm proud of the improvement that I've seen in him. With a bit more work, he'll be a showstopper.
