The barn was rather quiet, a rare occurrence here at The Vineyard. Not a soul was snorting, not even our most feisty Gypsies. No, for once, everything was at peace, and everything seemed calm. That is, until he came along.

When it comes to the holidays, I only find it right that I treat myself with a present, as well as give some lucky animal the chance to find their forever home. That's how he came to be. He was a stocky horse, fairly tall, with the most peculiar marking on his hip, and the most beautiful eyes you've ever seen. Everything about this animal was breathtaking, and I couldn't help myself from adopting him; I knew he had to be mine from the moment I laid eyes on him.

Just because he looked so handsome, so perfect like the rose marking that adorned him, did not mean he was without thorns. Oh no. He had many thorns. He was fairly hostile when it came to picking him up, finding that I was invading his territory and crowding him in, something he simply couldn't accept. When I did finally manage to calm him down, just enough to slip a halter over his head, came the stubborn-ness of a mule. The large mammal planted him hooves firmly into the ground and refused to budge even an inch, despite all of my tugging and pleading. It took several attempts, including bribing him with treats, to get him moving onto the trailer. Once inside, I had to shut the doors as quickly as I could, because the last thing that horse wanted was to be cooped up in a trailer, hitched to the back of an old pick-up truck.

After several hours of driving, and listening to the stallion whinny and stomp around, did we make it back home. The Vineyard had been peaceful up until this point; things would forever change upon introduction of this new Gypsy, in ways I can't even begin to explain. For one thing, he was territorial; he hated being in close vicinity to other equines, and especially hated the barns with their tiny stalls. He was more of a free-spirit, who lived to run and kick up his heels like some crazy Mustang. Oddly enough, though, he seemed to take a liking to one horse in particular, a stallion who was almost his exact opposite; handsome, but in a rugged sort of way. Docile, easy-going, the two stallions were night and day, polar opposites! But they clicked.

They clicked and before my very eyes I saw the two form a bond unlike any other I'd seen, especially among testosterone driven stallions. The two became close friends, finding solace in one another whenever one was upset. Their bond was like that of brothers, the two became practically inseparable. I saw that territorial, wild stallion turn into a regular-old child-friendly pony within a matter of days. The rose had lost it's thorns, but had earned a new title. Kaoru.

It has been nearly a month now since we've received Kaoru, and the once crazy stallion has now become a happy, gentle cart-pulling horse, who loves to work alongside his "brother," Hikaru. Yes, I'd decided to name the two "brothers" due to their incomprehensible bond. I don't know how it had happened, or why they seemed to click so well, but I wasn't about to ruin a good thing.

As I finish hitching the red roan stallion to the wagon, I can't help but sigh, as I look over my handsome pair of boys, all set and ready to go. "You boys are so dapper." I saw, as I reach up and gently fix the braids I'd put their manes into. "The children at the fair are going to love wagon rides with you two." Kaoru seems to roll his eyes at this, only to be nipped in correction by Hikaru, who was still probably the kinder of the two. Yes, I know, I promised the Kaoru had changed for the better, and he really had! Only, the fight in him hadn't died out entirely. He still loved to be a bit "edgy" and taunt other stallions like a macho-man, or strut his stuff around the pasture like he owned the damn place.

The nip seemed to knock some sense into the red stallion again, and although he wasn't terrific around loud noises [and small, running, screaming humans] he would be on his best behavior and pose no threat to any child or adult who approached him. If anything, he'd attempt a nibble at whatever sweet treats they'd be carrying-- Kaoru loves caramel apples. "Alright you two, settle down settle down. The fair will be opening soon, and that means lots of kids will be wanting to hoard around you, behave." I say, as I glance down at my watch and listen to the speakers blare: "Welcome to the annual county fair! Gates open in exactly five minutes, so please have your tickets ready..."

Within the next hour, the fair was flourishing with people of all ages, especially kids. And what do kids love most when they're attending a fair? Pony rides. So of course it was expected for them to crowd around the two large animals and squeal in excitement when they got into the straw-filled wagon. Kaoru was fidgeting for a majority of the day, constantly finding himself flinching whenever a child screamed too loudly or tried to pat his face too roughly. Despite being obviously annoyed, he never once made a move to harm any of the patrons that day, even when their sticky fingers gripped his fur and tugged too much for his taste. The truest test of patience for the former wild-child of a stallion; maybe he'll begin to realize that he has it good at home, with the other Gypsies, not constantly surrounded by screaming children or other various loud noises that may come as "spooky" to a horse. Maybe he'll stop parading around and trying to fight the other stallions... I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
