Story: Rouge had never been one to wear scary costumes for Halloween; his owner didn't like them, and neither did he. He'd been an Indian horse, a chef, and so many other things that her owner had cooed over, but never anything that had sent chills down the spines of any humans or horses. His friends, who were always covered in fake blood and gore come the holiday, had always asked him why. He never wanted to admit the true answer, though: he didn't like scary things. You would think that the other stallions would figure it out once he started skipping the horror movies before their owners gave them their treats, but they never had. This year, though, would be different. This year, he was going to get over his fear of the scary side of Halloween.
It all started with the costume; a demon mask, which looked more like a cow's head skeleton to him than anything else. It went perfectly with his red coat though, and it worked so well that even the barn cats steered clear of him that day. Rouge avoided looking at himself in the mirror for fear of spooking himself, but it was clear to him that it fit perfectly. He could see well, and the mask wasn't crushing any parts of his face. Since there were no other elements to his costume, there was no turning back; he was going to prove to his friends that he could be scary, and hopefully none of them would disagree.
He made his way out to the pasture at a smooth trot, the mask never shifting on his face as he moved. His owner must have had it made for him, for he had never heard of something like this happening with any of his friends' costumes before. He stopped thinking about the mask, though, as he approached the hill where the rest of his friends would be waiting. This was the moment he had been worried about for weeks now, but he wasn't going to let it worry him any longer. He had found the drive to put on the costume, so now he needed to show it to someone.
Rouge couldn't help but be confused when the herd of horses fell silent at his approach. Usually, he was greeted warmly by the group and complimented on his costume as he searched around for his friends. Today, though, all eyes were on him, and he could see the whites of most of the eyes he had looked at.
Everyone panicked as he took another step forward, frightened whinnies echoing throughout the pasture as some started running. Was there something wrong with his costume? It was just a mask, and he didn't think it was that ugly when he had seen it...
"Hey, it's just me! Don't be scared!" he cried, hooves pounding on the dry grass as he moved after everyone. A few of them stopped, though, when they recognized his voice.
"Rouge, that's you? I never would have thought!" one of his friends replied, trotting back over now that it was clear that there was no danger. The incident was quickly cleared up with the rest of the herd, and the festivities resumed without issue. He got quite a few compliments for his supposedly terrifying costume, though he thought that they were all joking. His friends had dressed in costumes ten times scarier than his mask, after all, and no one had run from them.
All of that aside, it was the most fun he'd ever had on Halloween in his life. He even got an extra treat for looking super scary, and stayed for the horror movie! He was exhausted by the time he trotted back to his stall, but he couldn't have asked for anything better. The one thing that ruined the night: he couldn't get the mask off.
