Show Name: Your Elusive Daydream
Barn Name: Nefertari
Gender: Mare
Eye Color: Yellow-gold
Personality:
Her name is an ancient Egyptian name meaning 'the most beautiful'. She had been named this as soon as they saw the amazingly coloured foal. They'd never seen anything like it before. She was mesmerizingly stunning to them, so she really earned the title in their opinion. She is like a daydream; many often imagine a horse with a coat as brilliant as hers but never see it. She unintentionally seems elusive for this reason, as many seek to find a horse like her. Although she isn't purposely elusive, she does have an exotic air to her. Maybe it's her captivating golden eyes or her personality, but there's something about her that gives you the feeling that she was raised in a faraway land. She is unique. She's not afraid to go against the majority's opinion; she's a free thinker that's more than willing to think outside of the box. Nerfertari actually quite likes the fact that people see her as a mysterious mare. It allows her to be her mainly-introverted, quiet self. Most don't know her too well, but those who are close to her know it all. She is very open with her closest friends and she is actually pretty protective of them.
Adventure/Misadventure:
It had been a long week for both the mare and myself, both of us waiting impatiently for the weekend to come. It was going to be such a great weekend, as I'd planned out a nighttime hack for Saturday night to celebrate her birthday. Although she was one of my newest horses, I had a lot of trust in her and a lot of faith in her ability to stay calm, even if under pressure. This would've worked out fantastically, except for one problem; my lack of good luck. My plans never fail to go awry, and this one was no different.
I'd prepared for the hack by packing Saturday morning. I slipped the essentials like two flashlights and a blanket into a black canvas bag. I also decided that we would have a picnic, so I brought myself a peanut butter and banana sandwich and a funfetti cupcake to serve as my slice of birthday cake. For Nefertari, I packed two gala apples and a small horse 'cake' that I had baked the previous night by mixing bran mash, carrots, flour, molasses, and a few other ingredients.
As soon as the sun started to set, I grabbed my bag and my phone, sliding it into my pocket, and headed to the main barn where Nefertari waited in her stall. I groomed her and tacked her up quickly, pausing for a minute to fasten my bag to her saddle. I walked her outside and hopped on, heading down the road in order to get to the forest that was behind the barn. The sky's vibrant sunset hues were already being cloaked in the darkness of the night. Perfect. It was going to be beautiful; I knew it. The sky was cloudless and we'd have an excellent view of the stars. Thankfully, I knew the trails well enough to follow them by the moonlight.
We followed the path for what felt like ages before we arrived where I wanted to be. We had to walk up steep hills and navigate paths obscured by overgrown roots and branches, but it was all worth it. This spot was the most beautiful place in the vast forest; the waterfall. Water cascaded over the high cliff into the huge glimmering dark pool below. We made our stop on a part of the path that formed a cliff beside the waterfall, almost halfway up it. The spot allowed an amazing view with us not getting wet at all. When I hopped off of Nefertari, I loosened her girth for her to be a bit more comfortable. I undid my bag and pulled out the food. I rolled the two apples over to where my mare stood, tied loosely to a tree. As she crunched them loudly, I took a bite of my own sandwich, taking the time to take in my surroundings. It was such a surreal feeling, as everything seemed so very perfect. The twinkling stars, the glowing moon, the rushing waterfall, and my lovely mare all in my view. Nothing could be better. We quickly finished our food, so I stood back up and reached into my bag again in search of our dessert.
In that one moment, before I could even pull my hand out of the bag, a huge piece of a tree came plummeting down the waterfall. This completely spooked Nefertari, who turned sharply and bolted in the other direction, snapping the reins that tied her to the tree. I grabbed on tight to the strip of the broken rein that was still attached to her bridle, but she didn't stop running. The powerful draft horse wasn't stopped by my added weight in the slightest. I was dragged down the path at a rapid pace, the skin on my face getting scratched up by branches that I was whipped into, but I didn't feel any pain. The adrenaline surging through my body was the only thing that kept me holding on to the leather.
It was like time was going in slow motion before she finally came to a halt and we were so far from where we had been. I tried to move, but I instantly froze, as the pain shooting up my body was too much to handle. I stayed half sitting, half lying down on the forest floor for another minute before I tried to get up again. I fought the pain and was able to get to my feet, leaning against my mare for support. The sound of both of our heavy breaths was all that I could hear. I brought my hand to my face and touched it gently. A bit of blood dripped down my fingertips, but much less than I had expected, in all honesty. I forced a smile on my face and toughed it out. I stumbled over to a rock, leading Nefertari behind me. I held my breath as I pulled myself back on her again, letting my body drop on to the saddle. My leg was killing me, but it was the last of my worries. I didn't want to look at it and get grossed out if my injuries looked bad. I wasn't sure if it was cut or I had twisted my ankle or what. All I knew was that I was lost. Then my vision started to blur slightly. I recognized this feeling instantly; it was a concussion. I held on to my horse's martingale as her reins were broken and just sat, not knowing what to do.
As if told by some unseen force, Nefertari turned and began walking carefully, taking a very specific path. I had no clue where she was going and I couldn't stop her. I let her follow her own path, bringing me with her, as I'd heard before that sometimes you can trust a horse's instincts. That proved itself to be true. She kept walking and walking, occasionally pausing to look in another direction, as if she was contemplating where to go. After about an hour, to my disbelief, she'd found herself back at the road where we started, my barn now easily in sight. How you ask? I still don't know to this day. Although some may think this crazy turn of events would make me very cautious with her, I now trust her more than ever. The mare saved us both by directing us back to the barn and I couldn't have been more grateful.
