Traumatic Event: Tobias remembers the day vividly, each moment etched in his memory like hoofprints in soft earth. He was grazing in a serene meadow, the sky a clear, achingly blue expanse. Sunlight dappled through the tall trees, casting shadows that danced in the gentle breeze. It was a rare moment of peace, or so it seemed. The tranquility was shattered by piercing cries from the sky. His ears swiveled, trying to locate the source. Hawks, three of them, circled high above, their calls growing louder, more insistent. A chill ran down his spine despite the warmth of the day. Instinctively, Tobias glanced towards the herd, but they were scattered, unaware of the coming threat. Suddenly, one hawk dived, talons outstretched, aimed directly at a newborn foal. Panic surged through him. Fight response triggered; Tobias bolted towards the foal near the edge of the meadow where a steep hill began its descent. His hooves pounded the earth in a frantic rhythm, but the hawk was relentless. He neighed to try and alert the foals to wake up and run towards their moms, but none noticed him. As Tobias reached the foal, the ground beneath him gave way to a rocky decline. Vertigo hit him hard. Heights have always frightened him – the ground feels safer, more dependable. But there was no recover. Tobias stumbled down the slope, heart pounding in his chest like a runaway drum. The hawk's shadow passed over him again, a reminder of its persistence. In his fear, Tobias misjudged a step. His hoof slipped on loose gravel, and he tumbled. The world turned into a blur of blue sky and rough earth. Pain shot through his limbs as he crashed against rocks, the slope unforgiving. Tobias struggled to find his footing, gasping for breath, his mind a whirl of terror and pain. When he finally came to a stop, Tobias was at the base of the hill, legs trembling and sides heaving. The hawk had perched above, its fierce eyes watching, calculating. It didn’t attack again, but its presence loomed, an ever-present reminder of vulnerability. Tobias limped back to the herd, each step a reminder of the ordeal. He checked to make sure the foals were safe. One had gotten a few scratches from the talons, but the others were fine. The other striders gathered around, offering silent companionship and gratitude for rushing in to save the foals. His mate frantically gave him a search over and whinnied with turmoil. She saw him fall and didn’t know what had happened. Tobias assured her that he would be okay after some rest for a few days. The meadow felt different now, shadows deeper, every sound a potential threat. Since that day, the sky holds a different meaning for him. What was once expansive and free became a realm of possible dangers, where hawks rule and heights threaten. Grazing, Tobias often glances upward, ears tuned to the faintest rustle, forever wary of the memory that the sky is not always a friend.
