His name will be Tobias.

First Touch

I frowned to myself as I watched Tobias limp around the field. I'd only had him a few days, but the agency assured me he was healthy. He must've done something to himself out in the field. "Oh you silly boy... what'd you do to yourself?" I sighed as I walked out into the field. I quickly roped him and lead him into the quarantine stall. "Alright sweet boy... Let me see your footsie." I spoke softly as I ran my hand down his shoulder and leg, lifting his foot. He was uneasy about me handling his sore foot, but the relief that flooded through my when I saw just a little thorn in his toe was intense. I set his foot down and patted his shoulder. "I'll be right back, handsome. I'll make that feel all better." I assured him before walking away and returning with a first aid kid. He squirmed uneasily, nervous of his new owner handling his hurt foot. I lifted it again and gently plucked the thorn from his toe as he whined sadly. I set his foot down and hugged him. "You did good! Good boy..." I said to him. He sniffed my hair before snorting and pouting. I led him back to the pasture and let him out. "Have fun! No more thorns please!"

First Saddle

How do you lose a nera? I mean.. They're huge! Come on! I tried to keep from panicking as I scanned the pasture, looking for Tobias. I'd only had him a week and he's already gone? I must be the worst owner ever! I grabbed a lead rope, a bucket of meat, and some treats as I walked out into the pasture, whistling and calling his name. After 10 minutes I was about to give up when a very sleepy looking Tobias stumbled out of a bush and wandered over to me, sniffing at the bucket before shoving his face into it. I slipped the rope around his neck and let him finish eating before giving him the treats and leading him to the indoor arena. I let him loose in the arena while getting a saddle and a halter. When I returned I put the halter and lead rope back on him and tied him up, to which he didn't seem to care. To be honest, I think he was still half asleep. I put the saddle on his back and groaned inwardly. Too small. I took it off and returned it to the tack room before returning with another saddle. Again, too small! I tried one last time and finally, it fit. He stood with his head as low as the rope would allow as he faded in and out of consciousness. I'm glad he doesn't mind the saddle on his back, but I wish he'd wake up!

First Ride

He looked so cute when he was standing there with his saddle all done up and his head drooping down, asleep. I chirped to him and Tobias lifted his head and turned to face me. I walked over to him and patted him. "You ready for your first ride?" I asked him as he yawned in response. I climbed up onto his back and into the saddle as he stood, his head starting to droop again. I gathered the reins and lifted his head. "Come on now - its time to work, pretty boy." I spoke to him as I nudged his sides with my heels. He walked forward slowly, obeying my commands but going at practically a crawl. I nudged his sides to try to make him walk a bit faster, but instead he stopped and stood there as he lowered his head. I nudged his sides a bit more as I grumbled "Come on you lazy punk, you can sleep out in the field." When I got no response I groaned and got off and began to unsaddle him. He remained asleep and still the entire time. As i put his tack and bridle away, I slipped a lead rope around his neck. I patted the side of his neck to wake him and murmured "Okay, you win. You can go sleep now." and led him out to his pasture and let him go. I watched him as he wandered over to a tall patch of grass and flopped over in it, going to sleep.
