persona ;;At first glance, Keir seems the opposite of what one would expect from a lion with an element as dark as his. Most have personalities as obscure as the shadows they slink in, but he embraces the spotlight wholeheartedly.
This lion is as friendly and affable as they come, at least to his friends. Strangers receive a much cooler welcome; it may consist of a careful evaluation or even an interview. He takes his time getting to know each lion he meets before befriending them officially, but once they gain his approval, they gain a lifelong and loyal friend. Surprisingly, or perhaps not so much, Keir harbors a longing for material goods of his own. Growing up without much parental guidance, he had never had a possession to his name until the day he first donned his suit of armor. As a result of this, he parades this mark of warriorhood around far more than is actually necessary. To him, the armor is not just protection in combat or a sign of rank; it symbolizes his independence as well. If one asks to inspect the craftsmanship, he'll more than likely accomadate the request with pride.
That's not to say this lion is perfect, however. He was not always this amicable; his deepest and darkest flaw is a bubbling cauldron of pitch black jealousy buried deep within his being. Keir tries his best to quash the ugly feelings whenever they arise, but occasionally they rise to the surface and drive him into an unpredictable frenzy. With powers of darkness as potent as his, this could lead to permanent consequences.
Secretly, he despises his father for not taking care of him in his mother. His father was a formidable warrior, but his heart belonged in battle, not to his family. Even so, when the transformation took place he shaved his mane and joined the ranks of the fighting warriors in hopes of meeting him in the field. Though he has no idea what he would say to his father in such an event, the will to see him again is the main driving force behind his military ambition.
Another influence is in the element. His father possessed powerful powers of darkness just like his, but he used them with care and was able to garner popularity with his charismatic personality despite his unsavory magic. Keir has no such advantage of his own. He clings to his hard-won friends tightly, unwilling to let them go now that they are in his grasp. Some might say that they would be better off without his company, but already it is too late. Unwanted or not, this lions treasures his friends and would sooner blind himself than allow harm to come to them.
One of his greatest worries is that the harm would come from himself. Infidelity, betrayal, dishonesty- Keir has no tolerance for any of these things, and he knows it. With his jealous streak and occasional temper, who knows what he could do? How do you protect someone if you're the one trying to hurt them?
history ;;
Keir was born on the planet to a warrior father and nomadic mother. Though he traveled with his mother at first, she eventually began to feel that she could not provide the care and attention a cub required and returned him to the tribe. Pride lionesses became his adoptive parents as his father was often away conducting business on foreign planets, and his earliest memories consist primarily of them.
Keir's characteristic jealousy manifested itself early on in his life. When the time came for his new mothers to mate and bear children of their own, he was apprehensive. Would he like his new "siblings"? Would they like him? Birthing season came around all too quickly for the young lion, and soon the area was littered with newborns and their doting parents. He could hardly believe the quantity of cubs at first, and rejoiced at the thought of so many new playmates. Unfortunately, disillusionment came swiftly and with it his innermost fears were realized and unlocked.
With new babies to take care of and more on the way, the lionesses were busy making preparations. They hardly had time to coddle Keir, the sting of which he felt keenly. The other cubs his age had no interest in befriending the dark intruder in their midst. The cubs older than him fixed their sights on their 200th birthday and upcoming transformation with an intensity that could not be shaken. There was no point in considering approaching the newborns - not only did he find their cries extremely annoying, but he felt bile rise in his throat whenever he saw a mother fussing over her cub. Pay attention to me, he wanted to say. Forget those tiny bags of flesh. His dismay grew as everyone seemed to forget about him altogether, and for the first time, he wondered if his mother had been right in sending him back.
Time passed. Keir began to spend most of his time in solitude, practicing the art of commanding shadows as his trainer had instructed. Rather than let his emotions get the better of him, he learned to control them as well, making them settle like darkness on a moonless night. He slipped away from the tribe for a little while in search of his nomadic mother, but his memories of her were hazy beyond recognition and it came to no avail. Had she passed, perhaps? Nomads sometimes did not last long out by themselves, especially a lone female. The longer he searched, the bigger the feeling in his gut grew that told him his quest was in vain.
If his mother would not take him, and his father had likely forgotten his existence, than he had no choice but to return to the supervision of the tribe for his rapidly approaching transformation. On his way back, Keir detoured and stopped at the lake said to hold the souls of the deceased. A few other lions were present, most notably a mother and her son. They were the first of his kind he had laid eyes upon in a while and, with the sick feeling rising in the background, he observed the cub coming closer and closer to where he stood on the shore. Stay back. The cub paid no heed to the mental warning and opened his mouth to say something to him. Dark waves swam in Keir's vision and without a second thought, he forced them away from him and into the other lion.
Temporarily blinded, he cried out, drawing the attention of his mother. She came galloping back to his aid instantly and roared at the dark lion, enraged. Shocked and beginning to feel ashamed of his impulse, Keir bowed his head and retreated quickly. Why had he done that? The cub was innocent. It was only hours later that he realized that he had recognized the mother as one of the females who had nursed him, but clearly she had not recognized him in her fury. With shame in his heart, he returned to the tribe and sought to make amends. Art wrote:
