First Touch
"Beyond the limits of time and space,
Where hoofbeats heal and heartbeats race,
Watch the horses as they prance,
The plains their stage in a natural dance.
See the mares as they wander by,
The foals all under her watchful eye.
Behold the stallion standing guard,
'A noble protector,' sings many a bard.
Now look to the grass as a new foal is born,
Pure marble coat with her crown a lone horn,
In moments she stands on willowy legs,
So noble, so regal, this equine of lore.
Therein lies her rightful place,
Well past the limits of time and space,
Glimpsed only through the clearest glass,
Somewhere that the peace does last,
So long as the lost crown remains."
The blue roan mare listened with pricked ears as the human chimed out a whimsical tune, broken occasionally by laughter as the other Neravontii, Glade, frolicked around her. The woman had been doing this without falter for the past week. She would slip into the duo's shared pasture before sunrise, and perch up on the fence to watch the dawn. The green Nera would go charging up to the human, and stick to her side like a burr for the rest of the day. After the sun was up, the human would get up to go bring them their morning meal, and while they were eating she'd dump out the water trough and promptly refill it. She'd spend a while wandering the pasture with a wheelbarrow and pitchfork, Glade trailing along behind her, and not once in that whole time would the roan mare be pestered. It was odd, but the human didn't seem to notice, or if she did, care.
Of course, Storm had taken to following the duo from a distance during this whole thing, considering how little else there was to peak her interest.
From there it only got stranger, though. Like right now, the human was perfectly content to just flop down at some random point in the pasture and start eating her lunch. Glade would always, without fail, snap up the first sandwich the woman would bring out. The two-legged being didn't kick up a fuss though, just calmly pulling out a second one from her little blue bag to nibble at herself. Yet the scent of food remained with the bag, and by extension the human, even after that. It was odd. Though after the woman had eaten, she'd kind of just... lie there. Flat on her back, just breathing, occasionally twitching at a fly or something. For
hours the human would do this, her green shadow eventually following her example and settling down on the ground nearby. Then they'd
both just lay there, basking in the sun and lazing in the breeze.
It was at this point that the roan Nera would slink the closest, ears pricked in curiosity. The green mare would lift her head at her pasture mate's approach, but wouldn't rise, and Storm could sate her curiosity as the human lazed about, oblivious. Today though, the roan mare had enough confidence to be a little more daring. Her nose pressed against the human's side, staying there a moment as she waited, simply drinking in the scents. Yet when the human didn't stir, the roan mare relaxed. Beginning an enthusiastic search for the food-smelling bag and the secrets that it hid, the mare froze as a the human quaked just as giggles pierced the air. When nothing else happened, the mare slowly drew away, taking a step back for good measure. The human sat with a beaming smile, rising just in time to watch as her newest Nera turned to bolt back to their previous distance, if perhaps just a touch closer.
