Day One

At first I had no troubles at all getting Irati Silva into the horse trailer until that pesky little mare decided to pick up her hoof and aim it right towards my arm. Thankfully, it didn't hit my arm, instead Irati's hoof missed my arm. At that point I KNEW she didn't want to be in that trailer and back to the barn. I then thought to myself that it'd be worse to get her out of the horse trailer, since just about everyone knows a green horse like Irati can surely gallop off and jump around when she's not handled correctly. Haha, someone might be stunned by her beauty and not even help!

Okay... back to getting her into the horse trailer. It felt like a decade or two, but I dealt with it anyways. Irati kept throwing her head around, which I knew was a sign that she really didn't want to be in that trailer. Eventually she just gave up and very slowly walked on in the square trailer. There was a haynet, and I didn't think Irati liked it until she nommed on a piece of hay and decided to stick with it.

The ride towards home wasn't that bad, besides the amount of time. I happen to be really kind of impatient and the ride was about an hour long. It was about 2:41 PM when Irati was unloaded from the trailer. I'm going to be honest, I myself was quite afraid of that horse. I couldn't show that I was terrified of her, because she'd get really tense around me and then who knows what could happen?

So after the trailer door was open, I gently grabbed the rope of the halter hopefully not scaring the mare. I pushed her back a little, tugging on the lead rope. As soon as she did tug on the purple rope, I thought 'Nope'. She's definitely not going to like this one bit. Irati didn't bother to move, she just swung her head around, even when I tried to touch her face. Probably headshy. Poor girl wouldn't move, though she didn't appear to be in shock. Just a tad bit stubborn. Within a very long time, she decided to move one leg while I gently pushed her back. I kept pushing her lightly back, until she was completely out of the trailer.

The Golden Retriever dog at the barn was taken to the stables today, and because she loves horses, that light golden colored dog had the idea to go over to Irati and investigate the new pony here. Irati absolutely did not seem to like it, and immediately bolted without warning, pulling away from the grip of the halter. What a mess! Irati ran the opposite direction of where the Golden Retriever was, and thankfully where there was a fence which enclosed the left pasture. One of the horses in that pasture decided to freak out a bit and canter away from Irati. One of the riding instructors calmly walked over to Irati in attempt to not scare the mare, and had a tight grip on the colored lead rope.

That was kind of a disaster. Irati backed away from the trainer until she realized that there was no enemy around. Still not having it at all, with a miserable looking face, Irati was lead back near the left pasture and was put in a round pen with grass. Hopefully Irati would calm down and in a few days I think I can lead her out to the small center pasture, but I know that'll take a bit of work. All I know is to keep Irati away from any dogs!

Day Two

My alarm buzzed at the time of 7:45 AM. I had planned to go to the stables at 8:30 AM, which means I had to go check up on Irati, the new Mustang mare. As much as I really wanted to sleep in five more minutes, I laid in bed for a few seconds until I had the motivation to get up and stretch. With that, I quickly got into a pair of riding clothes I bought a week and a half ago and set my helmet and leather boots near the door. I quickly brushed my teeth, brushed and put my hair into a ponytail, and fixed up a quick bowl of cereal. I had a bit of spare time so I browsed through my phone until it was 8:30, which I then put on my riding boots. I did bring muck boots with me just in case. I opened the door, got in my red colored car, and drove to the stables.

I was 2 minutes early, but that was okay since I got to go see Irati. I assume she'd been put in a stall overnight, and one of the riders informed me that she had been in the right barn to sleep. And so I walked right over there, looked for Irati, and saw her pricking her ears at me. She stared at me for a while, blinked, and kept standing there. I had brought a halter over, and since I told myself I had to train this horse, I went in the stall and put Irati's purple halter on. I obviously wasn't going to ride her today, just walk her around and try to lunge her a bit. One of the stable girls informed me that Irati had been groomed already, so I didn't have to groom the mare.

With Irati's halter on, I made sure she was okay and I led her out of the stall. Well, I tried. She wouldn't budge for a moment until I made a clicking noise and she came over to my side, following me. I had planned to meet one of my friends in one of the round pens to try and handle Irati. Irati kept stopping every few moments as I lead her around the equestrian center. I eventually ran into my friend, Carolina, who helped me train Irati. I couldn't be alone by myself, so of course I had to have a friend. We talked to kind of hopefully not freak out Irati until we got to the round pen.

I walked around the fenced in area with Irati to get her used to being walked around. After quite a few good minutes of that, I then put a bitless cavesson on Irati and attached the lunge line. I also had to get the lunge whip Carolina had on hand. I stood in the middle of the ring and held the lunge line in my left hand and directed Irati to walk to the left. A few minuted passed, and for the first time I said "Trot" to Irati, and knowing my luck, that stubborn little pony didn't bother to trot. I tried again, and thankfully she did respond. "Walk, trot, walk.." She did pretty well, only she didn't quite like to trot.

After about 40 minutes of training her, I decided to go back to the stall and put Irati back in her spot after I gave her a horse treat for doing pretty well. But before I could do that, Irati moved her head around when I tried to remove the cavesson and put the halter on her. I called over Carolina and she held the lunge line while I removed the cavesson, which was replaced by the halter. I took the rope and led Irati to an individual pasture to let her graze for a few hours. After I let her go into a pasture with no horses in it, I decided to go muck out Irati's stall.

I quickly grabbed my mucking boots from my car and put them on and headed over to the stall where Irati was. A shovel was located near the front of the barn, and so I used it to clean out the stall and what not. After that, I decided to go home to eat lunch and maybe come back to see Irati.

I returned to the stables at 3:30 PM, and after a bit of standing in the pasture, I slipped on a halter on Irati and led her over to a wash stall and tied the lead rope up to the wooden post. Irati had a few dirt spots on her coat, so I groomed her and picked out the mud and dirt from her hooves. Some time passed, and I decided to let the Mustang mare back in her stall. So I untied the rope fro the post, led Irati over to a stall, and let her enjoy the rest of her day there. I put her halter away, packed up the grooming supplies, and went back home at 4:45 PM to go read a book or two and maybe even draw until I fell asleep.

Day Three

Postby Atheon » Sat Jul 25, 2015 3:56 pm

Whilst arriving to the barn at 10 AM on a Thursday, I noticed some of the horses were already out in the pasture for a morning graze, but I knew it wasn't all of them. Excited to see Irati, I put on my riding boots and headed over to her stall where she was left to sleep the other night. I got her purple halter and lead rope, buckling it when it was on Irati's head. I then led her over to the next tie-up pole and tied up the lead rope to the pole. Today was the day I was going to ride her! I quickly walked over to the tack room, getting a saddle, a saddle pad, and a bitless bridle. I felt as if a bitted bridle wasn't the best choice right now.

I went back to Irati, carrying the tack and started with putting the saddle pad on. Then the saddle. I strapped the girth as well as I could, making sure it wasn't too tight or too loose. After that, I unbuckled the halter, but leaving it on Irati's neck so I would still have control of her. I then slowly slipped on the bridle, carefully making sure I wouldn't scare her. She stood pretty still while I got the halter off her neck. I put the halter back while I led Irati around the stable, making sure she wasn't going to be lazy. I ended up in one of the indoor lesson arenas. I had an instructor come with me, since there would probably be a bit of Irati misbehaving. So when I got to the arena, I found a mounting block, stepped on it, and put my left foot in the stirrup.

Today is the day I finally get to ride Irati! I was so nervous and excited. Irati moved a bit while I sat down in the saddle, making myself comfortable. Surprisingly, Irati didn't bolt until she threw her head around like she obviously didn't want to be ridden. Though she did better than I expected. I pulled on the rein to the right, hoping she would understand to move her head to the right. For a few seconds she didn't until I told her to "Move your head right" and hoping she would understand, she actually moved her head to the right! I did the same with the left. She did better with the right rein being pulled, but I think she'll get better.

I lightly nudged her side with my heel and told her to walk. For the first time, she moved her legs in a walk while I was on her back. It all went well, until she did a little bunny hop and nearly knocked me off. "Steady.." I told her and moved her around the ring. Then came the "trot" which was okay at first, a bit unsteady. Irati decided that she was not having this and bolted to a canter and bucked, causing me to fall on my butt to the sandy ground. I brushed myself off, got Irati back in control, and hoped that wouldn't happen again. I got back on Irati and told her to walk, nudging her side again.

She obeyed me, going at a pretty steady walk, but not as good as the last time. Again, I told her to go to a trot. She did, and I patted her neck for being a good horse this time. I let her trot around the ring as she kept her head down and as time passed, she did better and better. After about an hour of training, the time read 1:24 PM from the riding instructor's phone.

Gripping the reins of the bitless bridle, I walked Irati around the barn. Things went well until she came across that same Golden Retriever from the day I got her. Things turned upside down, and I lost grip of the brown reins as Irati spooked and reared from the sight of the dog. At that point, I knew Irati absolutely hated dogs and will refuse to interact with them. She cantered away from the dog, and I had to chase after her.

Within a few minutes, she finally calmed down after a rider told the dog to get away from Irati. I grabbed the reins again and led Irati to one of the pastures with other horses. I thought she was okay to interact with other horses, since she didn't seem to mind them while I led her around the barn the other day. I untacked her and put the halter on her instead of the bridle. I then led her out of the barn where the tie-up post was, and into the right pasture. I got the halter off her and released her to the pasture. The time read 1:55 PM. I headed home and ate lunch and browsed the internet, then went back at 7 PM to see how Irati was doing.

She was still in the pasture, grazing and socializing with the other horses there. I took the halter and slipped it onto Irati's head, leading her back to her stall and put her in there to rest. When I went home, the time read 7:45 PM. I got my riding equipment off and got into some normal clothes and read "Mockingjay" by Suzanne Collins and went to bed at 9:30 PM, early enough to get enough sleep for the day tomorrow.

Day Four

Postby Atheon » Sun Jul 26, 2015 1:45 pm

The time read 11:02 AM when I arrived at the stables. I had my riding boots on when I got to the barn and went over to the left barn where Irati was. The mare was in her stall, looking at the other horses that were also in their stalls. I slid the door of Irati's stall open after I got here purple nylon halter and I put the halter on Irati's head. Making sure she was comfortable with her surroundings, I led her over to the nearest pasture and as soon as I got over there, I unlocked the front gate and let Irati to graze, making sure I got her halter off her. Some horses trotted up to her and whinnied at Irati.

While Irati was in the pasture interacting with the other horses and ponies, I got my muck boots, put them on, and went back to Irati's stall and grabbed a sturdy shovel and slid the stall door open once again. One stallion in particular kept looking at me with his brown eyed gaze. I didn't quite know him well, but all I knew was that he was one of the lesson horses here. Getting back to work, I found a wheelbarrow and brought it over to the stall with the wooden door. I picked up the shovel, scooped up the old flax bedding, and shoveled it into the wheelbarrow.

After about 30 minutes of getting the old hay out of the stall, I got some new, fresher flax and spread it around the stall ground. Some time passed, and I got rid of the old bedding and put my dark colored riding boots on again. Today I thought I might as well try to make Irati hopefully do pole work, but because that might not be the best idea, so instead I browsed my phone for a while and then I would try to ride Irati again today. But before I could ride her again, I texted one of the riding instructors and asked him if I could go ride Irati again and he said that it was okay to ride her with an instructor. I decided to eat lunch here instead of home.

It was 1:31 PM after I finished my lunch of a sandwich, an apple, and a cookie along with some fresh water. I decided to go back to the pasture where Irati was located and clipped the purple halter on to her. I then led her over to the nearest tie-up post and tied the lead rope to the post. Then I went to the tack room and got a set of all purpose tack and set it on the tie-up post. First, I put the white saddle pad on Irati's back close to her withers, then the leather brown saddle, and lastly, the bitless bridle.

I took the halter off Irati's head, hanging it up next to her stall. Gripping the reins, I led the mare out to the indoor arena after I texted the riding instructor and met him at the arena. As soon as I got there, I grabbed the mounting block, positioned Irati so she'd be okay, and sat firmly in the saddle. Making sure my feet were looking good in the stirrups, I checked the girth to make sure it was fine.

After that, I let my pony get used to the feeling of a person on her back once again, and lightly kicked her side and told her to walk. She understood, going at a steady walk around the arena. Every 10 minutes or so, Irati would shake her grayed mane. After 20 minutes of going around the ring at the pace of a walk, again I nudged Irati's side and told her to trot. Irati switched gaits under my command, and after 20 minutes I thought she was doing a bit better than yesterday. The mare responded to most of my commands, and unlike last time, she never spooked.

About what seemed like an hour or two passed, I decided to take a risk and ride Irati back to the stables to untack her. The ride back was pretty good. I went back to a tie up post, got Irati untacked and replaced the bridle with a halter and put the tack in the tack room. I went back to Irati and lead her out into the pasture. There's always someone who lets all the horses back into their stalls at 8 PM, so I left Irati in the pasture and went home. The time read 4:28 PM when I went back home.
