Day One;; The Arrival

Postby Dark. » Sat Jul 25, 2015 7:32 pm

    22nd July 2015. 10:05am

Jetlag. Jetlag was a cruel mistress.
Tess stood nursing a cappuccino, one shoulder rested against the barn door. It was less than 8 hours since she'd touched down in the U.S. and she was beginning to feel it. Living binationally definitely had it's perks - and it's downfalls. Still she wouldn't have it any other way. Sipping the dregs from her mug she placed it on the floor next to her feet. Hopefully this years project would go better than last years. Tess sighed slightly. Last year, urgent problems at the stud farm back in England had left her unable to participate. They'd still kept the little mare at the Ranch, and she knew Nate and Rob had done a few bits and pieces with her, but she was still mostly green; mainly a field buddy for Nyx.

Just as Tess lifted her phone out of her pocket to check the time, it began buzzing slightly; a goofy shot of Nate and Hustle appearing on screen. Sliding one thumb over the surface with a lazy swipe, Tess held up the receiver to her ear. Shuffling could be heard in the background, as well as broken hums of country music from her Uncle Pete's backwater radio. A thump ran out followed by an exasperated sigh on the other end. "Try and watch the potholes Pete. We don't want him anymore wound up than he already is!" Nate's voice, in hushed tones. So she was getting a male this year? Tess bit her bottom lip, excitement beginning to bubble up.

Nate cleared his throat loudly down the line, "Hey Tess, you there?" His familiar husk and light country accent always came across accentuated down the phone. She'd only briefly seen him last night when he picked her up from the airport, and it had been a sight for sore eyes. Her Uncle Pete however, she hadn't seen since January so it would be nice to see him again.

    "Um...Tess...?"
"Sorry Nate. Yeah I'm here. How far away are you?"
"'Bout ten minutes. We're just coming up through Little Creek now."
"How is he? What colour - how old?" Her nervous excitement flooded through with questions.
Nate laughed at the other end, "Don't worry Tess. He's a little wound up, granted, but I think we've got a real good one this year."
Tess let out a sigh of relief. Nate was quite a shrewd judge of character, and if he'd taken a shine to the horse that was a real good sign.
"Now, why don't you go double check the round pen? I'll see you in five."
The phone cut out. Slipping it back into her jean pocket, Tess nervously nibbled at a thumbnail. Her mustang was almost here. Taking Nate's advice she pushed off the wall, turning over to the roundpen. She'd already triple checked the thing this morning - granted she had been half asleep - but one more time couldn't hurt.

Two roundpen's were built on site. One was a standard, five rung post and rail that she used primarily for lunging or the occasional jump schooling. This one however, doubled more as a holding pen. Six and a half feet tall, wooden post and rail with four foot high kick boards lining the inside. Getting in and out used a double gate system, with a channel connecting the first gate to the roundpen. It had been built with wild mustangs in mind.

    To be continued
