-First touch
As we unloaded Verna from the trailer, I could tell that she would be different then the other Neravontii horses I had trained. She was very calm and walked by my side as I led her into her stall. I left the back gate of her stall open so that she could pass into the field that was connected to the barn's side. I let her roam around her new surroundings for a little bit so that she could relax a little bit more before I would see if I could touch her. As soon as she re-entered the stall, I locked the gate that released her to the outdoor pasture.
"Hey there Verna, whatcha doing," I said soothingly. I rested my hand out along the stall's door and she walked over to me. Her large head settled on the palm of my hand as if looking for attention. I moved my fingers up and down her chin and watched her sigh out a blast of warm air from her nostrils. She seemed a lot more calm now, even though she was pretty cool before. Verna let out a high pitch whinny to see who else was in the barn, and as she wanted, she got many other replies up and down the line of stalls. I let out a small laugh before giving her one last scratch on the head and walking out to my car.
-First Saddle
A few days had passed before I had decided that it would be ok to introduce Verna to the saddle. I walked by her stall and called out her name as she came trotting in from the field. She was very trustworthy of me, and I believed that she would have no trouble with the saddle. I led her into the cross ties and then let her sniff the saddle pad and saddle sitting on the rail. She nudged at them, listening to the swishing against the wooden surface. I picked up the pad, and like I trained my other Neravontii horses, rubbed it on her side letting her feel its soft padded material brush on her skin. Verna turned her head and sniffed at my hand which held the pad. I gently set it on her back and then gave her a pat and a treat. She munched happily and I quickly and carefully placed the saddle on her back. She seemed to not realize that I had tightened the girth and put the saddle on until I led her forward.
She stood with her front feet out far beyond how one of her kind would normally stand. She looked as if she were stretching into some yoga pose. "Haha silly girl. The saddle is not that heavy. I promise that it won't hurt you to walk," I said cheerfully. She took two baby steps with her back legs and then stood back tall. She struck the ground with her front right as she pawed at the ground; her hands scratching at its surface. I lead gave a small tug on her lead rope and asked her to walk around the barn with me. It took her quite some time to stop walking with the weird front front baby step back strides, but by the end of the day, she walked around it in a normalish manner. Well, improvement was improvement, and I was happy that she finally was able to take the saddle.
-First Ride
Many weeks had passed and now Verna could be fully tacked and lunged around in the round pen. I was very proud of my girl and today we would have our first ride. As like every other morning, I came to the barn, tacked her up, and led her into the ring for her lunging warm ups. Then, I once she was nice and warm, I asked her to halt and stand at the mounting block. I set my foot in the left stirrup and watched her to see if she would move. I lightly stood up and put my weight forward and she took a step forward. I took my foot out and made her take a step back. This went on until I was able to get her to stand still while I mounted. Then, as soon as there was no reaction, I set my bum in the saddle and put my right foot into the stirrup. I made her stand still for a little while and then pressured her on. She took a few paces forward and then started to toss her head a bit. I gave her a few pats to settle her down and let her stop. I tried again and this time, she was absolutely marvelous. She pranced around the ring like a show horse and had a canter so smooth that it was like sitting in a rocking chair. I am so glad that I took her in because she will definitely be a great Neravontii. My hard work is paying off, and together we will accomplish so much.
