How would you treat this dog at home?:
Due to his little to no social experience with other dogs as a pup, we have been very careful as to when, who, and where he interacts with others of his own kind. At the moment, the only dog he's had one on one interaction with at close range has been our star dog Anni, as she is a very gentle, serenely sweet dog, and as such easy to relax around with. In regards to his larger size, he is actually often an inside dog at night time, and in the summer and winter, as the weather conditions could stress him and his heart in that way. His heart has no problems that we know of, but better safe than sorry.
He also gets more frequent check-ups with the on-site vet staff than the other dogs, but other than that, he's spoiled just as much as any other dog here at these kennels, and all dogs have a dietary guideline so his life at home doesn't have to be quite so different at all. All that's had to be especially changed just for him was change several things around the home to industrial strength, or reinforced, more so that Clifford wouldn't hurt himself, and so no frustration could possibly be directed at him if he broke something, on accident of course, but being heavy and muscular doesn't generally lend you to knowing your own strength, no matter how gentle a giant you are.
Dog's favorite activity:
His favourite activities don't come around very often, but that just makes those moments all the sweeter.
See it's not only his size that makes him special, but his extremely amiable nature that helps put smiles on little children's faces. Clifford doesn't get along all that well with most dogs, due to him being isolated from them before he came into our care, but what he does get along well with is people. Especially children.
How he adores their little squeals of delight as he does tricks for them! Or snuggles into him all sleepy and wanting something soft and warm to rest on. Naturally, his job is to do with children. He's an event dog, one that dresses up at certain times of the year, and visits schools, orphanages, and hospitals as a way to cheer up little ones that may not be having a good time, with his goofiness and just to spread general happiness to others.
His absolute favourite activity would be at Christmas time, when he dresses up as Santa; with a red vest with fluffy white trimmings, complete with a broad black leather belt, bells tied to his collar with green ribbons, and a large floppy Santa hat; visiting with a carer or two, with a sack or more full of presents for children that may not necessarily get one that year otherwise, whether due to being orphaned, homeless, or their parents can't afford them (he sees the latter in a lot of long-term hospital little ones as the parents find it hard to pay the medical costs).
The way their eyes light up at having such wonderful presents on Christmas, and given to them by a Santa dog no less, is all the reward Clifford needs, but a treat or two after isn't unappreciated.
The money to buy the presents every year comes from a donation regime run by Requiem Century Kennels and a few other BK kennels that pitch in as well.
