Title: Breaking the Waves
"Ivory, please slow down!" Laughed Clarity as she galloped after her brother. Ivory Sands chuckled and sped up, powerful forelegs beating the earth.
"Ok, break," panted Clarity, dropping her head to examine her reflection in the ocean. The two siblings were chasing each other around the beach, reveling in the freedom. A wave came up and dissolved the reflection just as it had begun to clear. She lifted her head and looked at her brother.
"Let's swim?" She suggested. Clarity knew her brother didn't like to swim much. She did, however, and wouldn't ghee up until he came along. He laughed and stepped into the surf.
Giggling with glee, Clarity jumped as far into the ocean as she could. The salty water felt cool against her sweaty fur. She stepped further. The liquid was up to her neck now.
"Clare, be careful," warned Ivory. Clarity didn't heed him and took another plunging step forward. Suddenly she felt the ground give way beneath her. She yelled in surprise as she was ducked under the cool water, now seeming a lot less welcoming.
Ivory swam toward her with powerful strokes. Just when Clarity felt the sand under her hooves again, something grated past her sides like sandpaper. Clarity stood still, breathing fast. A notched fin cut through the water toward her.
Sharks weren't supposed to live this close to shore. And yet here one was. Breath coming fast, Clarity took a step back.
"I-Ivory," she studdered. Her brother's focus was on the swirling water that marked the shark.
"Don't worry, Clarity, I've got this," he assured her, but he didn't seem confident. In a flash of grey, the predator jumped out of the water, taking Ivory's leg in its jaw.
Clarity whinnied loudly and attacked the sharp, pummeling blindly. Finally it decided it had had too much and swam off. Clarity looked at her older brother. He was struggling to breath, legs shaking violently. Clarity rushed to his side and slowly helped her brother to shore. There, he collapsed onto the sand.
Clarity's eyes filled with tears as Ivory took a final breath, then everything was still.
Personality: Before her brother's death, Clarity was a happy go lucky filly without a care. When he died, however, she became serious and rarely talks to anyone. She's responsible and quiet, and sometimes quick to snap. To everyone it seems like she's built a striker to keep out everyone, including me worries of Ivory, but she's really a sweetheart when you break her shell.
Poem:
Still
Everything is still
As she picks her way across the beach
Gray water splashes her hooves
As she gazes at the darkened sky
Her eyes are haunted
With memories of someone
Who no longer exists
She believes she is alone
Maybe you can befriend her
Crack her rock hard shell
To reveal a mare kind and true
Maybe, just maybe, she'll let him go.
