~ I found the mare hovering around the paddock where I kept Fairytale, one of my mustangs. She was a bay roan, shining in the sunlight. She did not run away. I watched her and she watched me. Neither of us moved. No, she wasn't quite looking at me. I turned my head around slowly to see what she was staring at so intently. It was Caranthir, my Frisian, who has cross-tied at the post. I suppressed the urge to laugh and turned back to the mare. Her ears were pricked.
I casually moved toward Caranthir. The mare's gaze riveted onto me, ears still alert. I came up to the big, black horse and gave me a sugar cube, all the while watching the mare. She fidgeted and her lips quivered. I took out another cube and placed it on the fence. Then I walked around to the other side of Caranthir and waited.
The mare tapped her front hooves in the dirt and swung her head. She looked about ready to burst. Then, with what appeared to be sudden decision, she trotted up to the fence and lipped the sugar cube off. She turned her head to look at me, her teeth crunching through the cube. She appear to afraid or wary, only curious. Caranthir glanced at her and snorted. The mare tossed her head, evidently pleased. I moved around the Frisian. The mare froze. I hesitated, then reached out my hand. The mare stared at it for five seconds, then, slowly, carefully, walked up to me. She snuffled my hand and then buried her nose into my palm. When she raised her head, she looked a trifle disappointed. She thought I had another cube!
The mustang mare remained with me. I didn't exactly capture her - she decided to stay, mostly likely because of the sugar cubes and Caranthir. I named her Dream On and trained her in the Western discipline. She loves all my stallions and is quite a character. She's not really afraid of anything or anyone, except vehicles, but that was easily remedied. She's still a big mystery to me and sometimes I wonder why she chose me. But whoever she is and wherever she came from, she always be my quirky Dreamy.
