Typically a female chooses an intelligent male. Ho
wever a female can be attracted to a male's bright
patterns and eyes. When searching for a mate a fe
male will lift her tail up over her back and howl a
sweet, almost ominous melody. Each Shiba song is
unique to the individual. A male responds by bring
ng the female a 'gift' which is generally a prey ite
m. This shows the female that the male can provid
e for her and their future family. The inspection th
en begins as she sizes him up. Males have the abili
ty to flash color into their brightly colored marking
s to attract the female, and he does this as she exa
mines him. When a mating pair are ready to have t
heir pups, they burrow into thorn bushes and create
a naturally protected den for their pups. The male's
job is to line the den with extra thorns, brush, and
soft feathers. A female can only breed three times.
