Nymeria is becoming increasingly
coordinated with each training session
she completes. She is eager to complete each task presented,
a tense smile always showing on her face.
Two years ago, this was not the case. Chilled to the marrow,
shivering and crying--she was
found clinging to her mother in the rain.
Her mother wasn't living anymore, but Nymeria wasn't going to
leave her own caretaker. Her high pitched yips for help
echoed back to her from the cold, dark walls surrounding her.
The bright light she had grown to fear had not come to visit
in what Nymeria imagined was several years.

Sobs from the other room slowly deflated the girls hopes.
The dogs her father had taken pride in where now legally seized by the pound.
The same dogs that the girl had run beside in the ring, and had
shown with pride, were now the state's property.

Her mother's chest had stopped moving hours ago.
She had started choking, her body convulsing in violent shudders.
It was because of the handlers. They had been kinder towards Nymeria,
but her mother was treated like an object. Her breath had left her lungs,
and her throat was constricted. Nymeria listened to her voice echo off the walls,
joining the chorus of other broken voices that found their way into her room.
