~ FIRST TOUCH ~
Jeremy was patient but even his tolerance was wearing thin. He knew from the chatter around the human helpers that he had been adopted some time back, but so far he hadn't seen hide nor hair of his new owner. And quite frankly, it was starting to worry him a bit.
He wasn't sure which of the humans had claimed him, they all sort of looked alike to him, so he had waited for this rider to show up and take him home, and been disappointed.
Today he had woken up, yet again fully expecting to be disappointed once more only to find a shy small quiet frail human lurking outside his stall...was this the mysterious missing new owner? He watched from the shadows for a while to see what the human would do?
He could tell it was a female, so he waited to see what she would do. She didn't speak at all, just watched, and he could feel the sadness rolling off her in waves. She seemed so sad, and lonely? She quite clearly felt sad for leaving him ownerless for such a long time.
Jeremy decided to take pity on the poor girl, and he crept out of the shadows until he was next to her at the stall door, then he gently nudged her with his nose as if to say "well, come on, let's get this show on the road?"
She didn't react so he nudged her again, and just for good measure, he snuck one "hand" up and gave her a little poke. That made her smile, which gave Jeremy hope. If she had a good sense of fun, they would get along just fine.

~ FIRST SADDLE ~
Jeremy felt like it was he doing the training of his human, not the other way around. She still had her sad moments, where she would look at him and her eyes would tear up...those were the moments when he would do something unexpected, to amuse her and try to get her out of her sadness.
He'd managed to get her moving along quite well with their training, but she still hadn't tried saddling him yet, and he was getting a tad impatient!
So today, while she was getting his stall cleaned out, he untied himself from the gate and went to the tack cupboard. After figuring out how to work the latch, he got one arm inside and lifted the handle. After that, it was just a matter of getting the door open enough to fit part of him inside.
He reached around until he got a good hold n the saddle and slowly dragged it out. He trotted back to his rider looking very pleased with himself (for being clever enough to get his own saddle out) and was met with a stern but amused face telling him off for getting the saddle all dusty.
He shook himself off like a doog and got most of the dirt off the saddle before placing it on the ground in front of her. She finally took the hint and (after giving it a quick once over with a cleaning cloth) lifted the saddle up onto Jeremy's back.
He shuffled around a bit until the saddle was comfortably seated on his back and then looked back again and gave his rider a big toothy grin. Yes, he thought, she's finally getting the hang of this whole rider thing.

~ FIRST RIDE ~
Jeremy was enjoying himself. It was a sunny summer day, there wasn't much wind (and it wasn't cold, thank goodness), and he was riding finally!
It had taken a while to convince his owner that this was a good idea, they were both ready, and nothing bad would happen. He took the safety of his rider, and himself, very serously and would do nothing to harm either one of them.
Which was why they were quite happily plodding along on the dusty trail. He had worried that his rider might have wanted to go faster, but she seemed happy enough sitting in the saddle, letting him wander where he wanted.
Nothing wrong with slow and steady, he thought. It gave you time to appreciate the good things in life, allowed you time to stop and smell the roses and all that. So he kept on plodding, and when he saw a field of pretty wild flowers he gave his rider a little surprise by jumping into the middle of them and lying down among the pretty blooms. She laughed at his antics, and it was music to his ears.
