Dear Mom,
I miss you so much mother, but I have much to tell you! As you know, a few years ago I had a major choice to make, two crossroads stood before me. The first was to stay with you, and the second was to travel the world! Specially Africa as it has always held my interest. As you know well, I decided to travel to Africa, and there I remained for awhile, traveling all over the country, meeting the people, and so many interesting personalities! It is truly beautiful over here mom.
Also, I met someone, her name is Bayou. Bay is a voodoo witch-doctor at one of the tribes I visited. I know what your thinking mom, "That is scary stuff!" "Do not get involved." "It could be dangerous." And it may be, but I truly fell in love with the culture here, and how revered the witch doctors are. They are like gods to these people. The interactions baffle and intrigue me. So, a few months after I arrived at that village I started to talk to Bayou, and believe me, that wasn't easy! She is not fond of outsiders, but she finally accepted and opened up to me. After that she became my mentor and began to teach me all the lore, tradition, and recipes that her parents and mentors had taught her.
Its so fascinating! That she can commit this all to memory, I fear I will never learn it all. Shes got potions and spells for everything from helping a aching back, to birthing, and to help a sick mako feel better. Its just amazing that these people have developed such techniques so far away from modern medicine, I see them in a whole new light of respect. I have fallen in love with everything here mom. I wish you could come with me and see this all, you would love the animals and the beautiful scenery.
In my studies with Bayou, I have traveled all over the lower parts of Africa, learning and acquiring knowledge and treating the people. We have done so much, last week I helped reset a broken paw for a young mako who fell out of a tree. You can truly tell they love their witch doctors, because the whole entire time she was watching Bayou in awe as I wrapped and reset her paw, and Bayou created a potion that would help her cope with the pain. The villagers also were kind to us. They allowed us to stay the night in their best hut and made sure we were well fed before sending us off the next morning. From there we went to about a dozen villages, helping with painful injures, resetting bone, and burying makos that had died of old age.
All the while Bayou remained strong, even while her patients where in so much pain, or sadness from the loss of the relative. She tries to look stoic, scary and intimidating to others, but I know she sympathies with them deep down. But I want to be just like her once I have finished my training. Able to bring the people peace of mind during painful and dark times.
Due to some circumstances that could not be avoided we returned to the States last month. Bayou has a home in New Orleans and currently I am staying with her until I can find my own place, but she is still teaching me all her potion recipes that I can start making here and selling to help the local population. This is what I was meant to do mother, I love it more then I ever thought I would. And I know you probably are worried about me still, but mom, I could not be happier. Helping people, being with Bayou, and learning. It is a once in a lifetime experience that I am so happy I took. It is so much fun, and I have to admit, I love Bayou's hairstyle. Those dreadlocks, think I could pull them off mom? Hahah, just kidding, I would look like a dork.
Anyways mom, I love you so much, and just dropping in to say whats happened over the years, and that I am back in the USA, and if you still want to see me(and aren't mad at me for my choices) I would love to see you again and talk about all the stuff I have missed. Love you, all the hugs for you.
Love, Hecate
