New tablet, mostly wanted to see if I could get used to it. Going to take a while, since it's definitely not a Wacom... but I think it'll be fine. (:

This is being judged on creativity, and I probably won't be awarding this to someone who makes this deerssert a fallen angel/demon. Other than that, have fun!

❂ Username: Bentley
❂ Name: Bernini
❂ Meaning: Bernini was a famous Italian Renaissance artist. Most of his sculptures/paintings and buildings were religious (including angels, yes), and remain in the Vatican/Rome as well as other Catholic structures. ❂ Why. The name was chosen initially for the stonelike quality of the wings, which made me want to look into sculptors. Once I looked into Bernini's work, I chose his name because all of a sudden, I was seeing what this deer could do if given some level of talent in the arts, even if he can't really hold tools like humans can. I began envisioning this strange mix of perfectionist artist - and then that hair? My brain drifted to the eccentricities of Warhol. I see that hair mussed up and covered in stone fragments or paint, windswept as he tries to stay airborne long enough to fix a detail, or to simply find a different angle to inspect his work.
And at the same time, I can't see him truly able to handle tools. I can only see him work in his dreams, where anything is possible and so much turns out perfect if only his imagination allows it. I see him welcoming the stoic spirit Cinik into his dreamscape to share his masterpieces and failures alike, to learn from the friend who has wandered the planet since its conception. I see an artist, insecure but so willing to improve, so what better name to give him than a master of the arts, especially one so ironically/appropriately tied to angels?
❂ Gender: Male
❂ Story or art:Sometimes, it was difficult to be the center of attention to an all-powerful spirit. Sure, the advantages were many - Bernini had been granted with perpetual health, an easy (though constantly moving) life, access to rare materials and objects pulled after the devastation wrought by particularly strong storms (or so he was told; he doubted the chunks of marble was unearthed by a hurricane)... but at the same time, the pressures of being the entertainment for such a frighteningly strong being and the aftereffects of the other's ire occasionally made him question his decision to follow the spirit.
Bernini was thankful for all of the time he could spend on his art in his dreams. He had an entire gallery in his head, refined by years of practice and exposure to the materials the pieces are made of; how else would the marble on the pillars of the huge room have gained such intricate swirling and shine without him having inspected that huge chunk of marble? How else would the gold filigree have gotten just the right amount of shine without the chunk of metal pulled from the wreckage after a tornado, or the ivory's perfect smoothness after finding the carvings in the tsunami's wake? Cinik did his best to spoil him, it seemed, despite all evidence to the contrary in the rest of his life.
He felt the other's presence before he saw him, though he was too focused on the details of the delicately swirling tail of the seahorse in the relief sculpture to hang in the East Wing. The telltale static that followed Cinik sparked lightly, making the feathers on Bernini's wings fluff out - a tendril of reality in the world of imagination Bernini had made for himself, and Cinik - well, he never fessed up, but the mortal was quite sure he was the reason he could always re-enter the room as he had last left it.
He honestly wouldn't put it past the storm-spirit to figure out how to make alternate dimensions for him, so long as he was entertained. It was on honor, he supposed, but at the same time, he would have liked to have been asked first. Or warned. Something that didn't make him feel as though he was losing his own mind as he tried to figure out.
YOU HAVE MADE MUCH PROGRESS ON THE AESTHETIC OF THE ROOM*, Cinik boomed, unable to control the volume and depth of his voice in the... whatever it was. It would have rattled the dust off of the ceiling, had dust existed here. For some reason, it had never materialized on even the oldest pieces. Either Bernini didn't want to see his art covered and forgotten, or Cinik had something against the presence of such an irritant - probably the latter.
"You've given me a lot of time to work," the grey stag replied, twitching his flyaway white hair from his eyes. "And more than enough inspiration. It would be nice if you didn't flatten parts of the world to get them, though. I hear that's not so good for the things living there." The touch of snark was a rarity in his conversations with the ancient deer, so afraid was he of the other's wrath, but he figured that, with such an oft-covered topic, this time would be forgiven.
I TOOK CARE TO NOT LEAVE CASUALTIES. The spirit's jump to the defense was almost amusing. HOWEVER, I CANNOT PREVENT ALL DEATHS. I WILL TAKE CARE TO AVOID CIVILIZATIONS WHEN ACQUIRING MATERIALS FOR YOUR USE. Chagrin and - was that fondness? - tinged the huge voice as it echoed against the stone and precious metal walls.
Bernini dropped to the ground, the wings on his back settling comfortably even as the ones behind his ears flared crookedly - his personal symptom of amusement, made obvious for the emotionally oblivious elder. The fact that his - his! - scruples could alter the actions of someone so powerful was both terrifying and hilarious. He was but an ant to Cinik - almost everyone was. What forces said he, of all beings, was worthy of being listened to by someone with power so strong that it could direct the weather? "I would appreciate that greatly. And I'm sure the poor ecosystems would, too. Fish aren't supposed to bind themselves miles from water, after all." Approaching the great being used to be a nerve-wracking action, but it had, with time, become something natural to appease the temper of the other; Bernini wasn't dumb, he knew he had some effect on Cinik (like a grounding rod for a lightning storm), and it amplified with his proximity. Carefully, he knocked the glowing yellow horns with his own tangled red ones, watching the powerful stag's long tail, usually twisting like the rolling clouds of thunderstorms and hurricanes, settle peaceably.
Good boy.
❂ Relations:Bernini's not a fool; he's taken his position as someone really close to a really powerful being seriously. Cinik took him because he wished for someone skilled in the arts as his companion, and Bernini has not only filled this role, but has spilled into determinedly teaching the spirit some morals and how to handle the emotions that he'd been tasting for several centuries. A clever little stag (well, when standing next to Cinik, anyway), he's also found ways to get what he wants without directly asking and begging for it. For all the his long tongue isn't forked, he certainly is the serpent that has wound its way around what might have been a god, and it is really only his own morality that holds the planet from being destroyed before the spirit's glowing yellow hooves.
Since he was taken before he really got out of his mother's shadow, he never really got the chance to have other friends, though he does remember the few acquaintances that he'd had fondly. He might have even dreamed of them, if he didn't end up in the dreamscape gallery so often when he sleeps. Not that he really minds; he knows Cinik leans on him for some kind of grounding - a far bigger task than he signed up for, but something he takes in stride. He does remember a few that he has met while standing as Cinik's companion - the ragged stag Syne, for example, comes to mind right away. He doesn't keep in touch with them, since he's kept quite busy with his present company, but he likes to think that they're on good terms still, even if he hasn't talked with them in what may be anywhere from weeks to years at a time. But of course, when he does see them after so long, he often doesn't recognize them anymore!

❂ Notes:
*Cinik speaks like Terry Pratchett's Death in the dreamscape. It's not something he controls, it's just the effect of that much power going through Bernini's head in order to access the room.
