The town of Aspen was extremely small, with a population of 200 at the most. It wasn't big enough to warrant being included on the map, and most who drove through were shocked to find it even existed. The residents all knew each other, and you couldn't even sneeze without someone being there to catch the drops. With all of this you'd think it would be hard to hide a full grown German Shepard and a 950 pound horse here. Which is why said German Shepard and 950 pound horse were having a tough time sneaking around the outskirts of town to try and get to the horribly old fashioned train depot before their ride left the station. Even under cover of night the task was daunting. The place was well lit, and had quite a few workers and security guards meandering around.
Machine and Citali hid in the woods across a small field from the station, the train which they had been planning to hitch a ride on patiently waiting to start up once more. The boxcars were still open as cargo was still being loaded. They only had a small window of time to get on board.
"See anyone near that red car near the back?" Machine questioned the brown dog next to him. Citali's ears were perked forward, a look of concentration on her face. After a few moments she shook her head. "Not that I can tell. I think we're in the clear. Let's move quickly, before we miss our chance."
Both equine and canine stalked out of the woods, moving as quietly as possible through the tall grass and towards the boxcar. The large gash in Citali's back left leg caused her to move a lot slower than Machine, and she struggled to keep up. Machine reached the car in no time, hopping in effortlessly and turning to make sure his friend managed to get in.
Citali was at the car, but her injury was making it rather difficult for her to get in. She could barely put any weight on the leg, which made it impossible for her to jump in. However, when she did manage to get enough air and attempt to claw her way into the car, the train whistled and lurched. She lost her grip and fell heavily back down to the gravel with a loud yelp.
The train began to move away from the station, and Citali was just pulling herself up.
Machine watched in horror as his friend was slowly being left behind. Citali got up as quickly as she could, and ran as fast her sore body could carry her. She just barely managed to keep pace with the train, but it was gradually gaining speed. She was going to be left behind.
"Move idiot!" A voice called out from behind Machine, and before he could turn to see who it was a spotted mare had shoved him out of the way. The mare reached down and grabbed Citali by the scruff, lifting her into the car and depositing her on the straw covered floor as softly as possible. Citali didn't even bother getting up after that, voting to simply roll over and shut her eyes.
Once Machine's eyes adjusted to the darkness of the car, Machine recognized Citali's savior.
"Johanna?!"
The spotted mare gave a small chuckle. "Hello Machine. Strange meeting you this far away from home. Ya finally go rogue?"
Machine gave a small snort. "I guess you could say my restless nature got the better of me, but I'm heading home now. In fact she's coming with me." The bay replied, motioning towards a now unconscious Citali. "There was this huge fiasco and she kind of got separated from her owner. Who it turns out if one of the newest riders back at the ranch. I won't go into much more detail cause I promised her not to mention the other stuff. It was pretty bad though, let's just say that."
Johanna looked over at the dog and winced at the wound. "I can tell..." She murmured.
"Well what about you. Cheap accommodations for someone of your rank."
Johanna rolled her eyes. "You know how Snide is. Always wanting to save where possible."
Machine nodded in understanding. "So where are we heading exactly?"
"Luckily for you home. It's a bit of a ride but we should be fine. Just sleep and the trip will seem a lot shorter, believe me."
Machine nodded at his old friend. "Thanks for letting us stay in here. Wasn't sure how much longer she was going to last on foot. This is a huge relief."
"Of course Machine. I'll see you in the morning." Johanna replied, retreating to a far corner of her 'stall' and getting ready to rest. Machine did the same, settling down in the straw next to the sleeping dog. He gazed out at the clear starry night in front of him, before finally laying down his head. Sleep overcame him immediately."
