Name:
You'll Find Me Through the Fire
[Standoff]

Gender:
Stallion

Height:
14.7 HH

Age:
Sixteen Years

Breed:
Quarter Horse, foundation bred

Why is his being retired and what your doing with him?:
[Just a short, quick bit on him. :3]
Standoff and I were making our regular rounds - simply checkin' on the livestock and seein' if anything was out of place. I had been doing this job for years now, workin' on some family friend's farm - they were older, and not as able-bodied as I. I rode their horse, You'll Find Me Through the Fire, an older stallion. On this day, a cow slipped through the fencing, and ran in front of us. Standoff was surprised, and reared up before crashing down. Then he ran, but slipped clumsily and fell on the ground, trying to stand. He wanted to go after it, but I didn't let him. Standoff was injured, seriously. I led him limping back to the stables, allowing the cow to run off; I'd catch it later. The stallion didn't seem very bothered by his injury, so I left him in the stall and went to tell the folks in the house.
After informing them of the accident, I went back out to Standoff; he was already worse. Groaning, I hurried him to my walk-in trailer, revving it up and driving off. The family would understand, I knew. I would take him to the vet. When I got there, the stallion was already limping heavier on his back right foot. I got him off of the trailer, and then took him into the concrete area of the vet.
I nervously waited as the veterinarian looked over Standoff. When he came back, he looked grim.
"Standoff has some fiber tearing. It is severe, an type III lesion. It has swelled and has some heat on it, but that will go down in just a day or so. Yet, he will be lame in that leg. It will be noticeable and make it harder for him to do many things." He said. "We'd like to keep him under observation until at least tomorrow."
I could only nod. Saddened, I signed a few papers, and then drove off again, my trailer empty.
A couple days later, after I had relayed the story to the farm owners, Standoff came home. But when he did, and I handed the lead to the man of the house, they handed it back to me.
"Standoff really likes you, he does. We have decided to retire him - he is older and now lame. We want him to live happily and well-loved for his retirement, and we are too old to give him all of that. We want you to take him. He will be better off with you at your ranch."
I was baffled, and the woman shoved the papers for Standoff into my open hand. It closed automatically, confused.
"R-really?" I finally stammered. They laughed and nodded. I turned around and loaded Standoff up again, and drove the mile or two back to my house. So...Standoff was mine?

Standoff has been fitting in very well. A lot of the horses really enjoy him. I have decided to use him as a trail horse, and a horse to teach others, considering his lameness and older age. I have allowed younger children to start coming, and now Standoff enjoys having a smaller, eager child on his back. It makes it easier on him. He is a sweet horse, and not easily distracted or frightened, so the children love him right back. I have occasionally walked him around on the days that he has no lessons, but I feel like he needs to have someone lighter for him.

Side Note: I could not stop thinking about the song "Titanium" while writing this. So, it shall be sort of his theme song! I feel like it just fits!

I have fallen in love with this guy...

Why is his being retired and what your doing with him?: He's being retired for an injury he recently received; during a stampede, a bull turned and gored his hindquarter. The wound was deep, but thankfully not severe. Combined with his age, the hands figured it best if they went ahead and retired him. In my care, he'd become a simple trail/pleasure horse; if he's strong enough, I might dabble him into a little bit of reining, though nothing extremely stressful. He'd also be used as a stud horse.
