A bay horse. Bay horses have what is called the 'Agouti' gene, which is why the letter 'A' is used to represent the gene in genetic diagrams. There are surprisingly four alleles (versions of the gene) of the bay gene: 'a' (the recessive non-bay allele), 'A' (the dominant bay allele), 'At' (the dominant seal bay/brown allele) and 'A+' (the dominant wild bay allele). Each one restricts the amount of black present on a horse's coat, with seal bay/brown being the least restricting and wild bay being the most restricting.

Genetic information:

Black (extension) gene: Homozygous E/E= all offspring will have black/black-diluted coat colour.
Bay gene: Heterozygous A/a= some offspring may be bay, some will just carry it, others may not be affected at all.
Classic type: Heterozygous Tob/tob= 50% chance of Crossheart type.
